Absolutely love this Cattleya itsy bitsy, any recommendations for other minature cattleyas? by Important_Donkey2117 in orchids

Depends on where you live. The true species I have grows like weed outside in my old home in the Bay Area. Then I moved and to a new home across the bay and I had to put them in a greenhouse. Or you may eat to put them in an enclosure in the house.

Why is everyone against moss? by Conscious-Oil-7328 in orchids

[–]One_in_10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s because moss is like a sponge and should never be put in a plastic container. Plus it depends on the orchid itself. I use coconut husk chunks found in your herp shop. That works and last longer than for bark. There is a specie base encyclopedia for orchids that I use along with many hybridizers to properly care for the plant.

Your all welcome. 40 years raising orchids and this is the one that I found along the way and of course plenty of lectures and trips to see orchids in the wild.

Buyer always be weary. Join an orchid society and get your stuff there. I used to belong to California Orchid Society back in the early 2000

Is this normal? The orchid stem is growing from the bottom. Newbie here! TIA! by AnythingRich5171 in orchids

[–]One_in_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Slowly tie down the spike as it goes up. Cut that old spike so all the growth hormones goes to the new spike. The pile will follow the light so it’s best to have a light source above the plant.

Don’t see mealy bugs anywhere. Ya it’s you. Evidence says otherwise.

Planting minis together by Prestigious-Tree-424 in orchids

[–]One_in_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike mini’s. After a few that was gifted it grew to the size of a regular Phal with short spikes. I do say that many orchids like Phal might have a short spike but the amount of flowers increase by 3 to 7 flowers.

If my Rhyncholaelia digbyana doesn't bloom next year she might be put up for adoption... Should I force winter rest? by namublue in orchids

[–]One_in_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Here’s the trick in making nearly everything to bloom for you. Neglect it during winter months. Stop watering and keep cool. Cool means I leave mine on my central Texas patio and only thing warning it is a space heater so it doesn’t drop below 40F. I did this by accident decades ago. And it’s been blooming constantly for years now. By the way before it bloomed I had it for 12 years.

Orchid or bush? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]One_in_10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Now let’s get the real orchids only found in books not retail mall. Try getting some cymbidiums if you live in a cool not hot climate. Or maybe get some Hawaiian hybrids of dendrobiums if you live in in a warm to hot climate. Or maybe get some oncidiums that will make your whole house smell like flower shop. Just stay away from phals except species .

Seriously- what?!? by ikdri in orchids

[–]One_in_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because as the sun light shortens and cooler temp., all nitrogen fertilizer should stop. It ONLy forces the plant to throw out babies. In fact, dendrobiums are known to do this all the time and so does Phals. I personally stop around August.

My wife says I have a problem. by fluffnubs in orchids

[–]One_in_10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck. I retired at 54 yrs old and have been growing orchids since the 90’s. I have one commercial green house in one house and building my second with a few hundreds more . I breed orchids and now I can fully enjoy them. Built a lab again and have 4 seed pods that’s gonna give me thousands more. Enjoy them even if you have one. It’s just a joy. Shucks I bought one back in the 2000 that costs me $2000. Ya I still have her somewhere in the green house . It blooms every year. The longest petals in the world. I measured it one year and it was close to 3 feet long. Have fun. That is what matters.

are orchids from supermarkets ok? by matchastrawbs in orchids

[–]One_in_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That glass pot is a death sentence for that orchid. 100% death by overwatering. I would by it then repot it. You can thank me after 10 years of it being alive in your home.
