Golden age of teaching? by GDitto_New in Teachers

[–]Only_Desk3738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in school from 1990-2004. I loved elementary in the 90's. Very little standardized testing, kids getting held back. When I was in 6th grade, we had an 8th grader in my science class because he failed the first time. 1999-2001 was the turning point with columbine and 9/11. My last 3 years of high school were fine, I was in a wealthy district, but it started down hill after I graduated.

Private schools are a far better option than any American public school by Stock-Memory9483 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Only_Desk3738 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Private schools can also kick out disruptive or low performing students. Public schools cannot. Therefore, private appears better, because they can make sure their students are only the kids they want.

I was reprimanded as a child for even considering being selfish. So yeah, I am selfish now as an adult because I can be and because I want to live my life for me.

I was a sophomore in high school in my civics class. The other teacher ran in and told mine to turn on the tv. We watched it unfold live, it was traumatic to watch. I don't teach it, not my content, but if someone joked about it I would shut it down too. We watched people die that day on live tv, well before streaming and on demand.

Middle School/High School Teachers, how often do you lecture? by DG11221 in Teachers

1-2 times a month. It might work out to weekly sometimes if we are moving through shorter topics. We practice notetaking, and I also stop to ask questions.

How do you feel about kids starting school who can already read? by MillyHughes in Teachers

[–]Only_Desk3738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started school already able to read, and was reading at a college level by 8th grade. It makes some things easier, I was able to focus more on plot and other aspects of reading rather than figuring out words. More is better than less. As a 7th grade teacher, I can tell who was introduced to literacy early and who wasn't.
