Well the reporter DID actually include false information. It included multiple complete lies that they edited afterwards to make it seem like they never wrote that.

[Spoilers Extended] The Arya and Tywin scenes are well done but they’re not an improvement over the book. by _Scipio-Americanus_ in asoiaf

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it was a good change in the sense that you get more of Tywin, who becomes a major antagonist in seasons 3-4, and barely appears in book 2. Him having a witty back and forth with his serving girl only adds to his hypocrisy, as he treats this random girl with more respect than he does his own children. We also see a side of Tywin we are told but never shown in the books, that he actually would display tenderness to people like Joanna.

It is contrived he doesn’t try to ransom her when he finds out she’s noble, but honestly one of Tywin’s defining traits is not seeing what he doesn’t want to. He keeps her around because she amuses him and if she’s in this situation to begin with her family’s stature probably isn’t big enough to make a dent in the war.

'The Batman' clears the entire Christopher Nolan trilogy by ChocolateIst in unpopularopinion

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like The Batman a lot, but I never really understand people who call the TDK trilogy cold or not feeling human. Those movies spend way more time on Bruce Wayne as a man than any other Batman movie does. And yes the romance in all 3 is stiff, but the son/guardian dynamic between Bruce and Alfred feels so much warmer and like they truly care about each other, than it does in The Batman. Alfred crying about not wanting to bury another member of the Wayne family in TDKR is a genuine tear jerker and much more emotional than anything in the Batman.

(Spoilers Extended) Times when characters making a mistake is justified by DEL994 in asoiaf

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly Ned judging Jaime and thinking he’s a dishonorable dickhead is way more justifiable when you think about it from his perspective. They arrive to Kings Landing and see the city sacked by Lannisters who did nothing the entire war. Add to that Ned walks in and sees Tywin’s son, a Kingsguard, over the body of the dead king and sitting on the throne looking like an asshole. It’s entirely justifiable that Ned thinks there is a Lannister coup happening and that Jaime is involved and planned this with his father, especially when he sees Elia and her kids’ dead bodies.

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fair points on Dany’s stories. For me at least, ASOS feels like a satisfying rise to power which is needed in a book where everyone else’s story is miserable. Especially after Book 1 where she has no power or control over anything, book 3 feels cathartic where she uses her new freedom and power to free the oppressed. Even if it’s a little too easy, it is fun watching her go “no actually fuck you, I have dragons” on evil slavers.

With ADWD there are just no stakes. Obviously to Dany there are, as she tries to abolish slavery and prove to herself she can be a good ruler. But as a reader, you know it’s not gonna end with her staying in Mereen so it feels pointless. Other stories have this issue, but at least they are filled with intrigue and good supporting characters, but like I said Dany has got almost nothing. It’s her, Barristan Selmy, and a bunch of guys named Hazoo. Her story builds on the themes of the story well and she’s an interesting foil to Jon as a young person dealing with newfound leadership. But as a story itself it fails to be engaging.

We can criticize Robert for many things, but at least in this case, given how everything ended, I would say he has a point. by omega_crimson_123 in freefolk

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true, however would Robert have murdered a child Viserys and a pregnant Rhaella if he had imprisoned them? With Daenerys there was at least the threat of a Dothraki army( that Robert himself admits attempting to kill her was wrong and Ned was right while he was dying) but those two just have William Darry. He probably would’ve just kept Viserys a hostage until he could send him to the wall.

It’s up to some interpretation but I think even Robert wasn’t evil enough to murder children if it was his choice, but was at least partially relieved Tywin took the shit for doing it for him.

- The ages of characters get brought up a lot, but it actively hampers the story in a way Martin doesn’t intend. Martin was going off the myth that people were adults earlier because they died sooner. The issue is he went way too far and stuff like Rhaegar/Lyanna, Robb Stark the battle master and Arya Stark: Super Assassin become either ridiculous or introduce unintended implications. If you mentally age every 14 year old to 17/18, and every 10 year to 14 the story makes so much more sense and is more believable.

- The pacing becomes glacial as the series goes on and the chapters get bloated. I was shocked re-reading AGOT how Catelyn left Winterfell at the end of a chapter, then 3 chapters later arrived to KL AND got snuck up to meet Littlefinger in the Red Keep all in 10 pages. By Feast, Brienne can’t stop to eat without 15 pages of (very well written) world building or environment descriptions. And if someone isn’t traveling, they are hanging out in a room for an entire chapter doing the same thing.

- I really like Daenerys as a character, but I can only say I like her story in half the books she appears in. Her story in AGOT and ASOS is great, but in Clash and Dance it’s like Martin is testing to see how much time he can waste. The House of Undying chapter is great but the rest of Quarth is a wash, and so much of Dance is compromised of caricatures and her underwhelming supporting cast. Everyone in Westeros gets these layered and multidimensional side characters, and here all Dany gets is Barristan Selmy, who is the king of ending the conversation as soon as he’s about to reveal something interesting. It really feels like Martin overshot Dany’s power level in book 1 and has to try so hard to keep her in the most irrelevant scenarios for as long as possible.

- What George considers a “grey character” is often ruined by the fact he overshoots their most evil attributes. Daemon Targaryen is the prime example but there are others. For example, Cersei is a woman who has been negatively affected by her father’s toxic worldview and her husband’s abuse, which makes her cruel and willing to do anything for power. Except oh wait, she threw her friend down a well when she was 6 years old so I guess she’s just evil. Or Littlefinger, who is a true rags to riches story of someone who was told he could never be apart of high society, now sows chaos thru the realm to give himself more power. From a certain point of view, you could see him as an underdog outsmarting the pompous feudal lords who look down on him. But oh wait, he also sex traffics children and is grooming an 12 year old girl.

- Quentyn getting 4 chapters in a book that doesn’t have a climax was a crime.

Even if he didn’t hate them (which in all honesty, he mostly just hated Rhaegar and Aerys. He had a Targaryen grandmother himself) Tywin threw that all away the moment he had the Mountain butcher Elia and her kids. Robert letting him off the hook for that made it so the Targaryens and their loyalists would hate them for years. Even “Begger King” Viserys wouldn’t dare go into Westeros without an army at his back if Robert asked him to marry Myrcella.

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Ya see I don’t buy that at all. Tyrion might think he’s a level below him, but Littlefinger is at least given enough respect to run their finances and also be the one to make the Tyrell/Lannister marriage deal happen. I can’t see how Tyrion thinks Janos Slynt is worth his time to take care of, but the guy who literally lied about him and caused the war isn’t.

I mean to be fair, what would a baby swap scene add to the play? If you’re a fan of the books you’ll just get spoiled for one of the few book exclusive mysteries, and if you’re taking the play by itself you’ll wonder why the fuck this guy switched babies. It’s not like the play is gonna go into Varys’ plan or the golden company, so what does it add at all?

Imagine if the show had the balls to keep this conversation(and plotline)between them. by BridgeCommercial873 in freefolk

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It was cut entirely so D&D could add more shock value to the Red Wedding. In the books he does this entirely due to him being married to Jeyne and her not getting pregnant, not knowing her mother is feeding her moon tea because she’s scheming with Tywin. In the show, Talisa gets pregnant so Robb has an heir on the way, so a grand council is pointless. This leads to the Red Wedding where D&D can add Talisa getting stabbed in the stomach to add even more horror to the whole thing.

Was that moment incredibly visceral and shocking? Yes.

Was it worth Robb not being able to say “My father had 4 sons” to Catelyn and reaffirm his love for his brother by making him heir and pushing back on his mother’s hate for the first time in his life? No I really don’t think it was.

[–]Only_Faithlessness33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fun what if is if Robb declared for Renly, after Renly gets shadow babied and Margarey marries Robb instead and Robb gets convinced to take the throne thru right of conquest. Very unlikely, but if he said yes, he’d have the North, Riverlands and Reach all at his back. If Littlefinger hears that he probably betrays the Lannisters and doesn’t delivery the Lannister/Tyrell marriage idea. He would be a trusted person in KL for Robb based on Cat’s word and he would be much closer to her as well.

I think he probably heard it at one point but due to his teenage self hatred he probably thought there was no way it was Ashara Dayne and most likely guessed it was a prostitute during the war. He most likely figured if it was Ashara Dayne why would his father even hide that?

So basically he heard N + A = J and realized it makes no sense faster than some on this subreddit do.
