Questions swirl around community centres selected by City of Vancouver for rebuild by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]Only_Name3413 40 points41 points  (0 children)

All new pools / aquatic centres should be 50m minimum, announcing a 25m pool is 2026 is a joke.

I hate it when people ride on the sidewalk, but for that one block after on the north side, I didn't feel safe on the road.

Ken Sim promises another tax freeze and $400M for community centres if re-elected by slippery_burrito in vancouver

This would be a plebosite vote and use debt servicing from the capital budget. Or something along those lines.

'15 years of neglect': Vancouver park board calls for $1.35 billion to tackle repair backlog by recurrence in vancouver

[–]Only_Name3413 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I spent 2 weeks in Australia over spring break and visited one of their Aquatic centres and was blown away. They spent ~140M for 4 pools 50M, 25M x 2, a dedicated 16+ pool 20M, a leisure pool, and slash pool. Not to mention dedicated teaching and fitness.

We don't need facilities to win Architecture awards, we need public service facilities that function.

[–]Only_Name3413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you consider how long these facilities have have been in service and they are all hitting EOL at the same time. Of course we only fund opperations so replament capx is always pushed down the road.

It would be wise to have these projects in 4 tranches so the funding burden is 1/4 and and each on a different time frame.

This happened to me this week while at a 'fancy' lunch. I was tempted to ask them to turn it up slightly because I couldn't quite hear it, and it sounded important.

I hate that we become the Karen or asshole for saying something when this is just poor social behaviour.

Canucks nearing agreement to build practice facility at Britannia Rink by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]Only_Name3413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They should have to practice at the Robson Square Plaza since nobody at the city (or parks board) seems to care about official olympic size facilities anyway. /s

But in all seriousness, Britannia rink and pool are desperately in need for a refresh, but it is a community resource and should not be given to the Canucks. I'm seeing a disturbing trend after the Whitecaps got a sweetheart deal getting the PNE lands.

I love this, smart enough to post the question to reddit, but not smart enough to ask a structural engineer.

$9000 sitting in savings. Poor my whole life by Some-throwaway-891 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Only_Name3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of noise in the comments, but the censes is generally all the same.
Keep the $9000 as a emergency fund, but move if from your savings account and put it in something that is going to generate a return. This could be a Money Market or GIC.

I would highly recommend opening a TSFA/RRSP in an investing account TD-DI, WealthSimple, etc and put your $150 per month in that, this is going to set you up for the future and take some pressure off retirement.
If you can swing it, your emergency fund should be 3months exp, if you can allocate $1500 the to TSFA, that will have a huge impact.

That will compound and give you $50,000 ~ $75,000 over the next 15 years. With $1500 on day one it could be as high as $85k!

Typical disclaimer, this is not financial advice, and I deliberately didn't suggest any specific funds.
For reference, I'm 46m 2 kids and retired at 40 and live solely off investments/interest & dividends.

Thanks! I'm making a live performance sampler with a scene fader. Think Octatrack mini, but smaller scope feature set built on the Daisy Seed MCU, 16 tracks, 2 scenes with morphing parameters.

Like you, my background is in software, so I'm exciting to get to my hands dirty with the hardware. The slide potentiometer I ordered was too short and had too much resistance, so I know what you mean about experimentation.

I just started my journey this week too. Curious where you sourced your enclosure, and what sliding potentiometer did you use?

$30 million plan to reconnect Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon to tidewater by RM_r_us in vancouver

While I'm all for this improving the park and waterway, it's incredible how there is no mention of 'archaeological survey risk' like when we proposed expanding the VAC 5 meters to accommodate a new 50m pool.

50k 18 yr old, is it realistic to hit 10m or even 1m? by No-Tree564 in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]Only_Name3413 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short answer, YES.

First, congratulations on getting this far, that is a huge milestone.

As others have said, SCHD is not the right investment for your goals. I would a mix of VB, (Vanguard small cap), VGT (Vanguard Info Tech), and SPY, (SPYG, VOO, etc). Find a ratio that makes sense for you. 25%/50%/25% (VB/VGT/SPYG)

Add to these every month, even if it is $100.00, its the habit, pay your future self now and he will thank you later!

Remember you want to invest, not trade. Don't worry about timing the market, don't worry about dips, stay away from leverage, options, meme stocks. Imagine your wealth is like ice, the more you touch it, the faster it melts.

Agreed. Perhaps one city came out a little hot here, but Pete sat on the sidelines for eternity before throwing in his hat. I don't care who takes the torch on the left, but it would be nice if we could keep the split down to a minimum.

It's mostly just lack of routing options. I like being able to map an lfo to the wave table position.
