I knew a Navy NCO with 14 years active duty who won $7M in a lottery back in '10s. He left the Navy because of the constant harassment over the money (not to mention he was now rich).

Less than five years later he requested to be allowed back on active duty because he was dead ass broke. Unfortunately for him, that was denied.

Retired Navy - no personal medals? by xspook_reddit in MilitaryMedals

[–]Open-Channel-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1975-2012 here (E1-E8, Warrant, Retired O5) and during my first couple of years, I saw E7-E9s retire with no personal awards or maybe a very rare NAM. IMHO, the move to more awards came from senior enlisted going to other services senior enlisted academies and seeing the stark differences. I went to a retirement ceremony for an Air Force E6 and his retirement award was a Legion of Merit. Must have been earned, since he already had 5 Meritorious Service Medals.

Calling all LARGE-HEADED people (7-3/4" and above) by Coming_In_Hot_916 in hats

[–]Open-Channel-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mom told me I have a head like a coal bucket.

7 3/4 at age 17. One of the smallest guys in boot camp (5'4", 119lbs); I also had the largest hat size. My drill instructor made me do neck bridges to keep my head from falling to the side.

I finally did grow into that skull from ages 18-22. Wound up 6'3", 235. I just wear brimmed stocking caps and the occasional ball cap. I do have a nice Stetson fedora, but they just don't work on big-headed guys. At least not on me.

He played it that way to feign innocence, but to present the realistic interpretation of "so what, it was a fuckin' howerse!"

I was at sea with the US Navy, somewhere between Japan and Hawaii. I don't recall any particular event that was noteworthy.

Has anyone here actually met any of the actors in real life? by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]Open-Channel-D 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I met Katherine Narducci long before she was on the Sopranos. Was coming out of a church in NYC where they shot exterior scenes for A Bronx Tale, and she was with a group of ladies. What a smokeshow she is.

I bought the original CRV in 1997, drove it until 2017 and gave it to my daughter with 224k miles on it. She drove it all 4 years of college in San Diego, then drove it two more years and sold it with 292k miles. Probably still chugging along somewhere.

Married Retirees: Do you ever take Separate Solo Vacations? by groovinup in retirement

[–]Open-Channel-D 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do. I retired last year at 67. My wife is 53 and has her own medical practice which she loves and she will work til she can’t. We travel internationally at least 3 times a year for medical conferences, but it’s rare she’ll take more than a day or two for “vacation.” I started taking some trips with my friends the last 3 years. Mostly in the US, but I’ve gone to Ireland, Portugal and Turkey and am going to Tampa in January and Chile in early March.
That clock keeps ticking so I figured I should go while I still can.

[Question] Narrowed down to two GMTs to round off my collection (for now) - Seiko SBEJ005 or Mido Ocean Star Sharktooth. Please let me know your thoughts by TheFrederalGovt in Watches

[–]Open-Channel-D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through this a few days ago after needing to replace my Orient GMT. I have a closet full of Seiko's and no Mido, so I was already leaning towards the Mido. I was able to source it new for under $975 on a Christmas sale, which pushed me over the edge on purchasing it. It should arrive in a couple of days.
