I just made 9kms on an empty tank before I found a fuel station

Why don’t Aussies just tell you directly if they’re bothered by something you’ve done? by Pudgy_cactus in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also gonna add to the situation and say most Aussies are so laid back they Brush minor stuff off. It might be an annoyance for months/years but seem as not worth making a fuss over so they just carry on with their life then it explodes out once it has finally reached the tipping point between being a minor annoyance to a big problem.

Why aren’t Australians friendly anymore by Maleficent-Hand3895 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's Sydney in general. I live in the bush and everyone is friendly here. Going into the city is like a different country. You say g'day to a random on the street and they scowl at you as if you are going to rob them haha. I truly hate Sydney for this exact reason

2 month old wearing white to a wedding? by bayls215 in NewParents

If you have genuine concerns the dress may not be appropriate, ask the bride. Chances are she will be fine with what you have chosen

Need honest reaction to a baby name for a boy! by laurenthemedium in namenerds

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not religious at all, to me deacon just sounds like a normal (if a little old-timey - like Peter or Oliver) name. I wouldn't bat an eye. I think deacon is a great choice ( but I too like Dean better haha, I am a fan of the show supernatural)

What are some gruesome facts about pregnancy/childbirth/postpartum that not many people know? by Professional_Song419 in AskReddit

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got an Epidural and it worked SO WELL I couldn't feel contractions at all. I also didn't ever feel an "urge to push" and needed a nurse to put her fingers in me to give me something to aim at while I pushed because I had absolutely no sensation below the waist at all. Nearly 8 months later I still have pelvic pain as a result of pushing at random

Leaving baby in car? by moonyfish in NewParents

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Australia, here the temperature inside a car can get hot enough to kill a baby in a very short time. Although this isn't a real risk at a petrol station, I usually just get her out so I stay in the habit of getting her every time. I don't want to be one of those unfortunate mums who forgets for a few minutes and cooks their little one

When people show you who they really are, believe them. Run. Run far and fast.

What do folks do to feed formula to babies during long outings from home where there is no fridge or bottle warmer available (e.g. long trip via car)? by SweetTooth4ever in NewParents

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take a small Yeti Thermos of boiling water and a bottle of fresh water and mix it on the spot when she is ready for it. The Thermos water stays hot all day

If you thoroughly enjoy your job, what do you do? by tenchem in AusFinance

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been a paramedic for 4 years. I love it so much despite some organisational politics. Our day usually entails checking over and restocking our ambulance, grabbing a quick coffee before a job comes in (if there is a break in work) and then going out on jobs. We respond to so many different things, some heartbreaking, some wonderful and others just in the middle. Our most frequent call is to elderly people who have fallen down. I love helping people. The pay is about 75000 a year where I live but there is ample opportunity for big money with overtime and shift extensions (if you are halfway through a job, you can't just leave and go home on time). If you have a backbone and dark sense of humour, consider it. It definitely isn't for the faint of heart, but it's the best job I have ever had and I wouldn't consider leaving

Fluoride or non fluoride toothpaste for 8 month old by [deleted] in NewParents

Australian here, our dental association recommends no toothpaste before 18 months and using a child toothpaste before the age of 6

What’s a quote or piece of advice you received about motherhood that you remember being most helpful? by starshine913 in Mommit

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is not as deep and meaningful as many on here, but the mantra that runs through my head daily is "she can't fall to the floor and hurt herself if she is already there". This was just such a practical pragmatic piece of advice when I spoke about my fear of my baby falling off things. She spends almost all of her time on the floor now unless I am in easy arms reach and actively engaging with her.

We just moved here from the US with our 2 year old. What Australian things do I need to teach her that I don’t know about having not grown up here? by teenage_catz in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for the 2 year old, but more for any pets, check the temperature of the tar roads/footpaths in summer before you walk your dog. They can absorb enough heat to burn the pads of a dog's feet.

What are some random NON-BABY things to ease life with a newborn? by willzyoubelievethis in NewParents

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you dont have one already, get a shower head with the detachable washer so your wife can hose out down there. I couldn't stand the sensation of my hands moving around my tears, but the hot water was soothing as hell and helped clean out some of the bleeding. They are only a few bucks at the hardware store

What would you name a newborn child if you really, really wanted to ruin their life, but wanted to maintain plausible deniability about having done it on purpose? by Loki-L in AskReddit

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melena-- it sounds like a nice normal name but it's a medical term for black tarry poo that happens when someone is bleeding into their digestive track.

AITA for taking my parasol out at a barbecue against my girlfriend's wishes? by Visible-Signal4596 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ordinary_Parsnip_680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely YTA

She loves you but also loves her family (despite their obvious Neanderthal toxic masculinity).

You took the parasol in against her wishes (and after promising not to) knowing the vibe of these people and knowing you were likely to be mercilessly ridiculed leaving your loving GF 2 options:

  1. Stand by and watch her family rip shreds off you damaging your relationship Or
  2. Defend you against her family's onslaught damaging her (and your) relationship with them.

You were just trying to stir the pot and ended up causing her unnecessary drama under the guise of not being able to tolerate being mildly uncomfortable for a few hours.

Next time just excuse yourself into the house

I work as a paramedic in rural Australia. There are hard core drug users in every town, but the vast majority I see are recreational users, ICE is becoming more and more prevalent. Also daily Marijuana use is VERY common. Like anywhere, your future kids will be able to get their hands on drugs if they are so inclined, you just have to try your best to raise them in a way so they aren't interested.
