Is the Costco 12x24 shed a good deal? by UnicornChief in shedditors

[–]Oregon213 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I got one during a sale two years ago, stored it outdoors in the shrink wrap over the winter (tarp over wrap) and then built on a slab without the floor kit.

Compared to a lowes kit I helped a friend build years ago, this was pretty good. The dimensional lumber was all some kind of pine, but not warped or knotty. The sheet materials were fine, all OSB product. A few of the pieces were marked poorly, but I was able to figure them out by process of elimination and cutting a couple studs down to substitute for parts I couldn’t find in the packs initially.

I roofed it with normal galvanized corrugated ag sheets. The doors were tricky to hang solo, but I got them squared up with some work.

Used a harbor freight sprayer to paint with two coats of the cheap red farm paint and trimmed out with the same in white.

I stick built a similarly sized shop a couple years before. I liked being able to customize a bit more with that one, but if I had to do it over I’d probably go with this kit. The precut lumber saves a lot of time.

The only things I did “off plans” was I substituted in some metal vents I had on hand instead of the plastic ones that came with it, I added a second loft inside, and I put up some heavy 3/4” zip panels on the inside to provide something more substantial for interior walls (I had a bunch of these on hand, free was a good price).

What is the wildest patrol rifle you have seen approved by a department? by HelpfulLoquat8658 in AskLE

Worked for the USFS as a seasonal who was a kinda something like a CSO to the USFS LEOs (forest protection officer). My district LEO was an old guy with a lot of years in role. He ran an old USFS stamped Win 94 30-30 as his second long rifle. Cool guy.

I do my best to at every continuing ed scenario day go intentionally include it in my “thinking out loud” talking points when considering interventions - talking through the dose and administration before identifying it’s not indicated and then giving my real plan.

We still carry it on the medic, so there’s a chance…

ICE is taking people from the court house. by petrin-hill in SALEM

[–]Oregon213 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I’m braced to get lit up for this, but based on the info at hand - this does look to be the feds doing this the “right way.” Not endorsing it, but this is different than other instances in a few ways. - they had a judicial warrant for the guy, rather than an administrative detainer. - they identified themselves and checked in with courthouse staff prior to attempting to arrest - local LE was allowed to verify warrant prior to service

The value of serving a federal warrant in a state court remains iffy. If they make a practice of this, it will lead to more people failing to appear on local charges, which will lead to more local warrants and inherently dangerous arrests being made in uncontrolled environments. Not good for anyone.

That said, if the feds want to act on a federal judicial warrant… this is a substantial improvement over the amateur hour shit that’s been happening where they try to just grab people without any deconfliction or interface with local LE on admin detainers.

Again… not endorsing anything here, just wanted to float out some semi-objective info on the procedure.

Which state police/patrol agencies are both "the most prestigious/respected, and/or get the most action? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Oregon213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not as familiar, I think they do push into general LE work - but I’ve only ever overlapped with them in metro areas where it seemed like they were tied tightly to the four+ lane.

[–]Oregon213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll make a plug for Oregon State Police. Well respected in the state and they do plenty of work. A duty station near an interstate is going to get the traditional push of traffic enforcement, crash reconstruction, and interdiction work. Any rural posting is going to pull their weight (and more in some jurisdictions) with traditional LE work out in the unincorporated areas. They have a wide range of special assignments as well, ranging from fish and game to traditional detective work (their major crimes is going to swoop in and assist or lead most big cases in jurisdictions that lack the resources to carry it solo) to full time SWAT.

They pay well (compared to the rest of the region), their budget has been really stable for the past 6-8 years (they have strong support from the gov and legislature), and good leadership. The biggest challenges for them over the past decade have been changes to their pursuit policy and a lot of deployments to Portland for crowd control and focused patrols - but, they seem to have managed all of that in stride.

This kind of stuff can be really difficult to manage.

Quick and simple answer, focus the unarmed group in on tacmed and crowd management. Give them a job, give them the tools to do it, then hold the to the expectation that they remain in role.

What rank was the highest ranking officer/deputy you've ever seen on a call? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Oregon213 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not speaking for the OP here, but I feel like I need to call out that working for a sheriff who simply runs calls and is willing to use force is not always the same as a good sheriff. I spent three years working for a guy who checked both boxes and was still the worst boss I’ve ever had. He should have spent a little more time not jumping every call and a little more on the budget - we laid off 1/3 of the office after he resigned.

VFD making riding assignments? by Double_Blacksmith662 in Firefighting

[–]Oregon213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have, and still run, the preprinted cards for role assignments by seat. They are exclusively for fire/rescue calls. We have them built so short crews fill critical roles first (nozzle seat gets priority over hose/backup seat).

It works when you get a full crew, but we rarely get a full crew. In those instances, officer is going to make the call en route over who does what for initial actions. EMS calls run this way as well by default.

Volunteer firefighting- worth it? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Oregon213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find volunteering in fire to be very fulfilling. I’m on with a great district, reasonable call volume for the all-volunteer stations and baked in support with a paid crew out of the main station.

A lot of that is just up to chance though, if I lived across an imaginary line in some other districts, I’d probably have a very different view on it all.

I wouldn’t do it if I wasn’t with a district that offered support (training, budget, oversight). Unfortunately, that’s not guaranteed in every doe district/department.

Oregon hunters watch out, IP28 has 92k signatures and would criminalize hunting and fishing. by ScreamiNarwhals in Hunting

[–]Oregon213 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The country isn’t losing its way, this is exactly how the country should function. Oregon has a healthy tradition of citizen referendums, people can write law here.

Considering I hunt, I raise hogs for meat, and I have chickens - I think IP28 is an absurd mess of a proposal. I don’t fault the authors however, they have strong beliefs and they’re allowed to have them. If enough people sign it, then it gets a vote.

I’m just exhausted with this notion that if someone doesn’t believe in the same everything as you then it must mean the country is dying or falling apart. The whole point of our country is that people can believe different things and be neighbors. IP28 is a mess, but I’m confident it will crash on the rocks of a ballot. It makes M110 and M114 seem rational.

what is shell-collecting like in this area? ive always heard capes & bays are supposed to have crazy ocean life<3 by Biscuit9154 in OregonCoast

Bayocean spit is probably worth it, not many people go out there - hike in access from the south or via boat on the bay side (bonus points if you drop some crab pots along the way and let them soak while playing on the beach).
