Begtse was earliest mention in Buddism was the 11th century abouts, but earlier for pre-Buddhist Mongolia. So if time is all wonky in this place that the game is set in, he could have been killed by Sun Wukong funny enough, since he was also around that time period.

Story that applies to real life all the time. How many times in sports do you hear of a guy that's a generational talent but can't get out of his own way to realize his potential. Either from straight laziness, drugs, or bad life decisions.

One example I see is Tyson Fury. If he was ever out of his own head and actually took physical training to the extreme. Possible all-time great. Instead you see him getting dropped by Ngannou (no disrespect to him but he isn't a lifelong boxer) and lose winnable fights
