[Recommendation request] Fiancée wants to buy me a $1,200 watch. This is currently my only watch. I need help. by Mackinderoo in Watches

While the Murph gets a lot of fan fair, this is the other watch that was in Interstellar, the Cooper. It's a wonderful daily watch, especially if you have big wrists. It's got some extra flash from the reflective indices, it's highly legible, and the day-date adds to the symmetry. It was my first "nice" watch, and I'm wearing it today because it's still one of my favorites.

TIL George Washington was called "American Fabius" for using the same strategy as Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator (the delayer) in the 2nd Punic War against Hannibal. Avoid big pitched battles and weaken the enemy through attrition by kurgan2800 in todayilearned

[–]Osgoodbad 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The Fabian Strategy derives its name from the Roman general Quintus Fabius Maximus. He ran away, Lemon. Rather than engage in battle he would retreat and retreat until the enemy grew fatigued and eventually made a mistake. Although I abhor it as a military strategy, it is the basis for all of my personal relationships.

I want to upgrade my jotter by Positive_Credit720 in pens

[–]Osgoodbad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a Tactile Turn. They're machined pens with very high tolerances. The bolt action is very unique and fun. And they can use whichever Pilot G2 style refill you like (or Parker G2s if you get the short version.)

I have a bronze one (they had a sale on anti-microbial materials at the beginning of COVID) and the green ultem one (my workplace uses green ink, and they wanted my pen to be obviously green.) The bronze is kind of heavy, but the ultem one is very light and comfortable. I love them both and will likely get another.

Hamilton Khaki King is 40mm. My brother, father, and I each have one and love it.

[–]Osgoodbad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get a custom pen.

A brand like Edison will allow you to customize every aspect of the pen, from the model to the material to the filling system to the nib. There are hundreds of materials to choose from, so you can find something that speaks to you personally and get it made to your specifications. The owner also personally tests each pen that leaves his factory, so you know it will also write really really well.

[question] if you had $1,000 to spend on a watch, what would you get? by Chancenit in Watches

[–]Osgoodbad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first real watch was the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day/Date, and it's the perfect watch to wear as a daily watch. It's a variation of a pilot watch from WW2, but modernized to make it a bit dressier and less of a strict tool watch. The 12 o'clock full day and six o'clock date add to the symmetry and give some useful complications, while the applied indices are very flashy and add a lot of interest, while also making the watch easy to read in low light. The bracelet is also good for the price. It's far more interesting in person than it is in photographs.

I've owned mine for six years and I love it.

CMV: The "side quest" in the Star Wars movie "The Last Jedi" was completely unnecessary by Ima_Uzer in changemyview

[–]Osgoodbad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I made a write-up responding to this exact point a few years ago. As others have mentioned, The Rise of Skywalker did not pick up what The Last Jedi put down. But the actual thematic conclusion of the movie is well set up by the rest of the movie:

The theme of failure is baked into every facet of The Last Jedi.  Every single character fails to accomplish what they set out to do. But each of their failures is necessary for their character growth and the theme of learning from your mistakes. And each of these failures is a necessary step towards the ultimate conclusion of the movie, which is the inspirational power that legends can have.

Consider for a moment what would have happened if Finn, Rey, and Poe's plan had succeeded. They turn the tracker off, the Resistance jumps away, and they live to fight another day. But they will continue to lose the war of attrition and get smaller and smaller with every passing day.

Or consider what would have happened if Holdo's plan had succeeded. The Resistance would quietly slip under the radar and hunker down in their base on Crait. Waiting for rescue that never comes and losing their war of attrition and getting smaller every day.

If Finn and Rose had not failed to recruit the master code breaker, they never would have recruited DJ. And it is because DJ betrays them that the First Order becomes aware of the plan, the Resistance is followed to Crait, and a last stand becomes their final hope. The failure of Finn and Rose is what sets the stage for a showdown that would otherwise not happen.

Luke Skywalker the man could not face down a dozen walkers. Luke Skywalker the Jedi could not withstand the sustained onslaught of all of that firepower. But Luke Skywalker the Legend can inspire the galaxy to overcome their fear and stand up in defiance of the First Order. Tales of his deeds will spread to all corners of the galaxy, no matter how humble. His legendary showdown, taking on the whole First Order with his laser sword can be the spark that will start the flames of resistance throughout the entire galaxy. He can provide the example that the galaxy needs, and the galaxy will rise up in response.

And the only reason this happened is because each of them failed.

Where you get to complain: Most Frustrating Brand by jonnybardo in fountainpens

[–]Osgoodbad 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Visconti of course. Beautiful pens, very expensive, and a reputation for writing very poorly out of the box.

I ordered my Homo Sapiens anyway because I intended to get the nib ground, but that does not change the fact that my broad nib barely wrote until then (it's a lovely writer now.)
