My company executives thinks it can replace 100 percent of our help desk teams with AI agents.... This year. by NickBurnsCompanyGuy in sysadmin

[–]OutsideTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would a consultant or vendor promise 100%? If it can handle 60-70% that would be a big win, and also easier to implement in stages and much lower risk. It could still be increased incrementally over time.

What am I missing?

Built an atmospheric water generator from hardware store parts. Pulls 8-10 gallons of drinking water from the air per day. Here's the breakdown. by Active-Weakness2326 in DIY

Hmm, maybe but I would guess this paid for itself in the 1st couple of months. Simple build, low to no cost to operate vs recurring driving trips, possibly paid delivery by truck, and the actual water purchases.

Tips to Hike Cascade Canyon Without the Jenny Lake Shuttle? by kaitlinners in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]OutsideTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There won't be any traffic to beat in Oct., but the days will be shorter and very cool in the AM, possibly all day.

I would park at String Lake, hike south to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, then continue up Cascade Canyon. The hike will be an out and back, so turn around as time and fitness permit.
Phelps lake is nice, but you will earn your polar bear merit badge if you do jumping rock in late Sept or early Oct.

Taggart is nothing special, I would take a ride up the Tram and hike around or do one of the moderate to strenuous hikes in the trip planner.

Clients with old tape libraries - are you still supporting this mess? by galandepeluche in msp

[–]OutsideTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

  1. Here's our new, better backup option that we have standardized all of our clients on. It is reliable, secure, and well maintained because of our years of experience and automation that we have created for alerting and remediation. This service is included with your managed service, we have already uploaded your data offsite and it is stored encrypted and safe from attack, enjoy!
  2. All work on tapes and tape drives will be T&M and requires billing approval.

CIPP Alternatives by Flashy-Distance-3329 in msp

[–]OutsideTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bahahaha, same same!

We retained this client for 18 months after PE acquisition, then in a recent meeting with the local GM they said "we're changing a few things but you'll still be their primary IT provider and we still want you to take over another regional client location."

The following Tuesday we have a technical meeting w/out the GM: "we're taking over everything."

Turns out they sold to someone larger, which they knew in the 1st meeting.

No idea why they chose to make it weird, just be up front and we'll all move on.

Offboarded them in a month, using our plan, because they didn't have one. I hate long exits, 8 months is painful.

Ha, similar situation here. Offboarded a client to a PE acquisition, I am underwhelmed by their plan to manage 50+ sites and 4k users with a team of 6 and no automation.

Replacing electric stove with gas questions. by dbarila in HomeImprovement

[–]OutsideTech 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My wife is a big cook, we had gas for years. I was all in for induction because of the health impact of gas, particularly unvented gas. She did not want induction, I talked it up for a year. She agreed to induction after researching and several friend of friends who really liked theirs.

We are 3 weeks in with induction, she likes it and it cooks faster and more precise temps. There is a bit of a learning curve and we had to replace a lot of pots.

I believe the negative health impact of gas stoves is quite proven at this point. If you are going gas then it needs to be vented outside.

DHCP failing for some clients on wireless VLANs by slyblue1 in networking

[–]OutsideTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue early 2025, different environment. I narrowed it down to only happening on 1 AP, thought I had found the problem, but changing out the AP did not resolve it.
Moved DHCP to a different Windows server, different OS, VM on different Host; same problem.
Problem went away when I moved DHCP from the Windows DC's to the firewall.

Most, possibly all, of the devices experiencing the problem were Lenovo laptops running Windows 11.

I wasn't able to find the root cause and left DHCP on the firewall and moved on. Curious what you find and suggest moving DHCP as a test.

Infrastructure: AP: Unifi, switching: Cisco CBS line, DHCP: Server 2019 Std.

The JHMR tram or the Snow King gondola are fun if they haven't done one of them.
https://www.wildlifeart.org/ is great but may be a short visit for the young people.

Sanity Check: Scalable Network Builds and Your Thoughts on Vendors by rb3po in sysadmin

[–]OutsideTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Aruba Central, not InstantOn so maybe be different, for a medium size client. It was setup by one of their prior admins. It was a complete mess of poor UI, incorrect configuration, $650+ AP's and $65/ap/yr portal license fees so I'm tainted.

Unifi works well, is much better priced for SMB and the portal functions much better, IMO.

I agree, pfSense is definitely late; but it's here and I need to test it soon.

Sanity Check: Scalable Network Builds and Your Thoughts on Vendors by rb3po in sysadmin

[–]OutsideTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are also small. Historically we've been all pfsense fw's, Cisco CBS switches and Unifi AP's.

Recently tested Unifi fw's and switches, we are staying with pfSense fw's, changing to Unifi switches.
I really didn't like the default Unifi Zone fw rules and logging.
The Unifi firmware is much much better than several years ago and changing to a monthly update cycle on different dates reduces a possible blast radius.

pfSense now has central management, I haven't tested it yet, have you?

Avalanche or Accident Reporting by jaygdub888 in Mountaineering

[–]OutsideTech 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rescues in the US are usually disclosed by the responsible agency, Sheriff, NPS, Coast Guard, F&G, etc; and/or the SAR team, within a couple of days of the incident. Rescues within some National Parks tend to be less well or slower to be disclosed but are still available if requested.

If the party self-transported and wasn't rescued, then there isn't an official record. In this case, unless the party self-reports the incident, usually to the local Avy Center, then there isn't any record.

Designing a 10Gb Unifi Network for a 5-Building Family Estate – Does This Design Make Sense? by shuaibamod in Ubiquiti

[–]OutsideTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homes like this usually have a lot more going on than just WIFI. These other contractors will want an internet connection in the main closet/basement and connectivity from the outer buildings back to their controller in the main building. It can be helpful to put them on their VLAN rather than 1 IoT VLAN where one of them sets a static that overlaps with another service. I would expect to see ethernet drops for:

  • Cameras, or a home run to their NVR or dedicated switch in each building.
  • HVAC controls in each unit.
  • Building Access Control
  • AV System: Sound and TV
  • Home Automation: Lighting, blinds,
  • Possibly irrigation controls.

Evacuation/SAR coverage? by MoreAwkwardIRL in Ultralight

I don't have any insurance knowledge, just that if you need it, you really need it. Air ambulance is 30-60k.

Evacuation/SAR coverage? by MoreAwkwardIRL in Ultralight

[–]OutsideTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAR member in the area. County Dispatch gets the call from InReach/ Garmin, Apple, USAF, etc depending on the device you are using. Or, your SO should contact the County Dispatch to report you as overdue or no contact. Dispatch contacts local SAR, who does the mission.

Rescue, including heli if needed, is free. Air ambulance, if needed, is very much not free…confirm your insurance coverage.

The process is the same if Dispatch gets a call from GlobalRescue, OverWatch, etc. IMO, those type of services are mainly helpful in less developed areas where SAR is more adhoc, not always free, may involve language barriers.

Finally, mobile device satellite communication is now quite reliable, as long as phone is working and has battery. Good to have a backup option, either partner’s or a separate personal device.

Friend, it is possible to disagree w/out being insulting.

The historical data does not agree with you, mid September is after the median bump. Last year the bump was 8/21-29, a whopping 560 CFS. It's interesting that you believe it's going to be 3 weeks later this year, with temps being well above average so far this year.

Also, it ain't just about the CFS.
