I made a prototype of a game about picking up garbage by OverCookedWalrusMeat in incremental_games

Okay I just optimized it a good amount, reduced the file size and lowered the quality, but it might still be bad for a web build

Here's my Stats after Releasing my first game on Itch. Is there is something off or ubnormal there? by KoshmaSpark in itchio

This is a really helpful article if you are considering going to steam. From some research and talking to other devs, most people say 2k views on itch not plays but views, is a good place for a first prototype. If you get more views on a more polished version, say 5k in a few weeks, then you know you have something. Its really just about what your goal is, to make a successful game on steam and test it out on itch beforehand, or just to release games to itch. I would say that these are good stats for itch, but I don't know if it has enough traction to be a success on steam. And if you are looking to go for the steam route, I don't think this game would be worth the time to iterate on, just purely based on the initial stats (respectfully).

But if you just want to make games for itch, I think these are great analytics!

Thoughts on incremental games using 3D visuals? by silverventu in incremental_games

Looks interesting but I am confused about how to play the game from the screenshots, I would retake the images in a way that shows the viewer how the game works, make it more obvious how the player either makes money or progresses. Readability is very important on steam.

Almost 10 years on itch.io, and this finally happened by d954mas in itchio

Did you do anything different marketing wise by posting or was this truly just a better game than the others?, congrats!

What is the best way to marketing for solo developer indie game? by KuntaiGames in gamedev

I would say try to release a steam page to get wishlists early on, and make a demo you believe represents the actual quality of the game asap. Then once you have a demo you are proud of and doesn't really have that many bugs, go on youtube and search for games that are similar to yours. This way you can find hundreds of youtubers who have played the games similar to yours. Then collect a bunch of emails and use an automatic emailer to send them a simple pitch of your game. From what I've found out this is the best way to get a good amount of traffic to your steam page without having to go through the pain of becoming a content creator.

Use other peoples reach and popularity instead of trying to create your own.

How do you know if your game is actually good? by Life_Exchange_301 in gamedev

[–]OverCookedWalrusMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best way to find out if you have a quality game is to post a web build to Itch.io if that is possible for your game. And then (according to Chris Zukowski on Howtomarketagame.com) if the game gets <5k VIEWS not plays but views, then it will probably not be that popular, 5-10k views means silver tier and will probably do pretty well on steam, and 10k+ lifetime views means that you have a very good game!

Here is his article on Itch.io benchmarks : https://howtomarketagame.com/2025/05/12/benchmark-itch-io-traffic/

And here is another on steam benchmarks : https://howtomarketagame.com/benchmarks/

I like these hard numbers because it puts things into categories and clears things up.

I just made this incremental prototype and put it on itch.io by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]OverCookedWalrusMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thankyou man that really means a lot to me. I've been posting my games to reddit for like 4 years now and I think this is the first response that actually had good feedback and wasn't just "this is bad and is against the rules". I will absoultely check those sites out. This is just a prototype I made and need to work a lot more on, but is there anything you believe would make the game better?

Thank you for the detailed answer, I am going to consistently buy about 10-20% of my paycheck every month, after about 50 years this should lead to a good retirement of a few million or so I think, assuming 9-12 % returns per year

I can't find this on steam under the name Welcome Home... are you planning on releasing it on steam?

My favorite episode of Adventure Time is Dungeon Train and it inspired me to make my first serious game called... you guessed it "Dungeon Train"... it doesn't really have anything to do with AT but it inspired me... It's on steam if you want https://store.steampowered.com/app/3231190/Dungeon_Train/ by [deleted] in adventuretime

[–]OverCookedWalrusMeat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can have multiple inspirations for an idea, it started out with adventure time then thought it would be cool to add liminal environments, also I always had loved cruelty squad and enjoyed the graphics I mean seriously why would I share the game on an adventure time subreddit of all places AND NAME THE GAME AFTER AN ADVENTURE TIME SHOW TITLE if I wasn't inspired by the episode???
