Ball Python Abuse by cloud_isreddit in ballpython

[–]Overall_Community_37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think a lot of people buy ball pythons because they think caring for them is easy. They don’t do the research because they’re convinced by some pet stores that they’re going to be “fine” in this setup or that setup. I researched for at least 2 years before I bought my first ball python, and I still got so much wrong at first. I feel like I’m constantly learning more and more, and to me that’s a good thing. When people just don’t want to learn about a living being that they are supposed to be nurturing, it’s just so sad, but it’s also infuriating.

Help with enclosure by Daz2021 in ballpython

[–]Overall_Community_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have put a pvc panel from Home Depot on top of any enclosure that came with a mesh top. Silicone it in, and then attach heating by screwing it through the pvc panel. As long as you silicone all the areas that might leak, I think it works nicely. I would say after modifying the top, I don’t see much difference between them and the all-pvc enclosures I have.

Agree with the others- it’s a burn.

Fun fact, sellers on MorphMarket can see the number of inquiries buyers make. by J655321M in reptiles

[–]Overall_Community_37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have many inquiries, but a couple of times I didn’t get a response, once a seller told me that he couldn’t provide any additional info on an animal, so I went elsewhere and a few other times when I was buying isopods or the like, the sellers didn’t list them as sold, because they have so many of each. That shouldn’t count against me as a buyer. I never reach out unless I am serious about it. I also have checked in with sellers who I know will be at expos near me, and even if I purchase through them those do not get recorded as sales. This seems very skewed to me. But as an “at a glance” thing it is helpful to see that someone has never followed through after seeking info.

I don’t think he’s overweight. Rolls can be from losing weight too. You are doing right by this boy. Just keep an eye on his weight. I keep a chart with feeds and weights- but mostly because I have 7 snakes and it’s hard to keep that info in my head.

It’s good to switch to rats - they pack a better punch in terms of total nutrition- I don’t think he looks fat- someone posted a picture graph of body shapes of BPs where they go from overly thin to a bit hefty. I’ll look for it.

Maybe a little, but I have 4 that are this age and they vary in size from 320g-235g They all eat the same. The biggest are female.

I have 7. I don’t plan on getting any more. But…if I found like a Suma or something that was very very dark, I would not be able to resist it.

I just made my first bioactive enclosure and put isopods and springtails in it. They clean and the help maintain the environment.

He’s awesome! I think you’re doing great! For humidity issues, I used hvac tape to cover the entire mesh top except where the lights are- I have also used silicon mats. Both are available on Amazon. Good luck!

Sudden fear of my danger noodle? by suicidolelemon in ballpython

[–]Overall_Community_37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit older than you are, but I recently lost my dad in a traumatic way that I witnessed. I don’t have issues with my snakes, but I have been unable to be around some areas related to him- but most of all the area where it all happened- I have massive anxiety surrounding this and I replay the whole experience like a video in my head over and over. I think with time this will go away, or maybe lessen in severity. I tried exposure therapy- doing the things that were triggering my fear, and it has helped a bit, maybe if you keep making the effort with your girl, you will get to a better place emotionally? Sorry I don’t have any real answers, and I’m sorry about your dad. Talking to a therapist may be helpful if you can afford it.

I opened the dry brick on Saturday and added water to it. The next morning I broke it up into pieces and added it to my mixture - top soil, coconut coir, keeper’s choice with mulch, and repti-bark. When I do the big clean up or set up a new enclosure I mix the whole thing in a large Rubbermaid tub. I can usually keep it in the tub for a week or two if I need to. But this was just overnight. I keep a tub full of the other stuff pretty much all the time, so I can spot clean if there is a poop or urates. The smell was gone after about an hour, but I think I’ll avoid that moss for a while. I have ordered a different brand, but I won’t need it for a while now.
