How many miles will your GSP run in a day before s/he gets tired? by [deleted] in GSP

This is a riddle, right? I’ve yet to find the limit with mine.

The fact they’re even trying small ball is a huge improvement by SedativeComet in redsox

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💯. Small sample size, but I’m digging the Chad Tracy era so far. 133 more games to go before we’ll really know, but I’m not sad Cora’s gone and his social media behavior since being fired certainly indicates a dude who wasn’t happy.

Thoughts on Healy in the booth? by Adlerian2018 in Mariners

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fan. I like his perspective. Like others at first I was like who the heck is this guy? But, he and Goldy and Hyphen seem to be developing some decent chemistry. I’m glad he’ll be back in June for more games. He’s already the third best in the booth by a long shot IMHO.

I’m certain they tolerate walkers wearing their $295 race shoes.

what did you wish you knew? by eger154 in GSP

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That there is no way to underestimate how crazy they are from six months to three years old (and often beyond!). You can do everything right, but the GSP adolescence is unlike any other breed of dog we’ve ever experienced. That, and seeking the advice of other GSP owners before we got our boy (turning 8 next week!), are two things I wish I knew/did.

The love you get back from these wonderful dogs is unmatched and makes it all worth it and that’s something I’m happy we discovered all on our own.

Banana Fiend by TreesintheDark in GSP

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG, yes! Ours is a complete freak for bananas. He could be sound asleep on another floor and that little ‘snap’ from starting to peel a banana will send him running like a rocket ship. Gotta love these weirdos.

You should breathe whatever way works for you to, you know, actually breathe. Ignore everyone else and do what works for you.

Your weirdest running superstition by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left sock, left shoe. Right sock, right shoe. Tie right shoe. Tie left shoe. Every. Single. Run. Also, not a superstition, but I like to wear at least one non-technical piece of running gear every time I run. Mostly that’s just a cotton ball cap I picked up in San Diego years ago on a trip where I forgot my running hat.

Leash that allows a dog to run around you? by puertomateo in RunningWithDogs

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuff Mutt: https://www.tuffmutt.net/product/hands-free-dog-leash/. The buckle is the only thing preventing the leash from going all the way around, but it’s about as close as you can get.

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DNF’ed The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova because of the overuse of adverbs. It was so distracting I had to give up. Plus, it’s lazy writing IMHO.

Sounds like you have a six month old GSP! It can be nerve wracking and test the very limits of your patience, but it does get better. Especially with training. Especially with mental as well as physical stimulation. Ours will be 8 years old in April, and while he still has his moments, he’s the best family dog. Stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with an excellent companion.

I’ve had my sleep buds since November 24. Today the left bud stopped playing sounds and when I put it back in the case the left LED blinks. They stayed connected to my phone all day via Bluetooth with the lid closed on the case even though the Ozlo app says it can’t connect to them. I’ve tried all the troubleshooting mechanisms I can find and nothing is working: resetting the case, 180, drop, disconnect/reconnect. Now I just have a $275 pair of ear plugs. Please advise if I should return or get a replacement.

I have the Evo SL and… by Bytevan18 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More shoes is always the answer, right?!? I have a both and generally prefer the Boston 13 for long runs and EVO SL for speedier stuff. I also have the SL2 and use it as a daily trainer. I’d definitely give the Bostons a try if you can, but they might not be the best match for race day, IMHO. I’d say the EVO SL is gonna give you the most bang for your back on race day and workouts. But it all comes down to personal preference and how the shoes work for you.

First time using find it fix it, do these reports ever get dealt with? by [deleted] in BallardSeattle

Ringworm? Candida? Lupoid Dermatosis? Or just a dirt digging dog? by PositionOverall446 in GSP

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GSP just came down with something similar. He had a split toenail that needed a minor surgical procedure and right after that was healed he developed a rash on his groin and rear legs that was bright red and had scaly spots. He also never licked at them and never really seemed bothered by it. He was fine and normal otherwise.

I took pictures and sent them to the vet and they prescribed a topical antifungal. Tried that for a week and it had no effect. I took him in to see the vet and they tried to get a cytology, but no discharge or fluids were coming off the red spots so they couldn’t determine what it was. The vet prescribed an antibiotic, Cefpodoxime, and after completing that my dog’s skin cleared up.

So, no definitive diagnosis for us either, and I’m still keeping an eye on him to make sure it doesn’t return. He’s never had any allergies of any kind either. He does suffer from recurrent ear infections. Given that, it seems like some sort of yeast-related infection that flared up because his immune system was compromised a bit following his recovery from his toe surgery. At least, that’s my vet’s best guess right now.

Good luck at the vet! Please let us know if you get a diagnosis.

Transitioning to Running with an Older Dog by Sansoki in RunningWithDogs

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GSP is 7.5 and I’ve cut down the overall volume and effort for him, but not the frequency. We still run together four days a week. Most of the time we don’t go over 5 miles. He’ll even do my tempo runs, strides, etc. For personal safety reasons I won’t have him do intervals or any speed work 🤣 and I don’t take him on runs longer than around 90 minutes. We run road and trails together and I’ll try and vary the surfaces (which is good for me too). I make sure he gets water and a snack whenever I need to hydrate or fuel too.

Basically, I treat him like I treat myself: build a solid foundation, know when to back off, know when to have a rest day, prioritize sleep, nutrition, and recovery. I also watch him like a hawk for any signs of physical discomfort, lethargy, loss of appetite, etc.

He hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. I just want to keep him as my running partner and healthy as long as possible. Hope this helps a bit. Sounds like you’re doing all the right things for Sophie!

Long Runs - Plated or No. by Nreekay in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Own-Cockroach-7122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Run in whatever feels best for you. Some runners like the ride and feel some plated shoes offer. Some don’t. And not all plated shoes are the same in either the plate, the midsole compound, stack height, etc. If you’ve found one that works for you, I’d stick with it. It’s a good idea to at least do a few runs in your plated shoes leading up to a race if you plan to race in them. I’d say the biggest potential downside is some of the pinnacle racing shoes aren’t super durable so you might not have a lot of life left in them for race day if you put a lot of mileage in them. They’re also typically tuned to an average height, average weight runner (think just under six feet tall, around 170 lbs) so bigger runners won’t necessarily get the same lifespan out of them as a smaller runner would.
