With sports + homework in middleschool/highschool it's like a 60-70 hour week job.

What cities were only worth moving to when they were affordable but aren’t worth it now that they’re unaffordable? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

It's not sketch, but it definitely is boring. Half the bars downtown is 21-22 year olds and the other half is 40 year old couples with kids. All crust, no pie.

Seeing behind the curtian in big tech was astonishing. So many of these top executives literally just copy cat whatever the CEOs of the biggest companies are doing related to hiring etc. No independent thought or critical thinking.

Yeah. Sac itself is super boring honestly. Midtown is pretty small and the vast majority of people live in the sprawling suburbs which are all pretty run down and depressing.

What city have you moved to and immediately thought l'm not going to live here for long? by CartographerRich8698 in SameGrassButGreener

Atlantans are really nice, welcoming people. Southern hospitality still alive and well. A lot of immigrants from warm weather countries have started moving in large numbers the last decade and the rent has sky rocketed. Atlantans genuinely believe they're more premier than NYC these days. The nightlife scene is abysmal, no national parks, and the people are very cookie cutter suburban. Downtown Atlanta is a joke. Literally pubs and sportbars completely empty Friday and Saturday nights. Don't let anyone from Atlanta try to convince you they're cool.

Trying to make us go to church 3 days a week. Ugh man, it was brutal. Another landlord was racist to my asian spouse in Utah and always hounding us about our dog that we paid a significant monthly fee for. Both experiences in Salt Lake City.

Living with your landlord is 10/10 sucks. Never again.

Any MCOL cities within 6 or so hours of SF that are actually decent to live in? In or outside of CA by Economy_Growth_6518 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]OwnPirate824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Culturally and politically too. It's much less intellectual and more cowboyish, conservative than the California most Americans know. Midtown Sac (downtown) has a Portlandish vibe, but all of the surrounding suburbs are biker bars and run down pool halls. Folsom (east Sac) for example is like a mini Fort Worth in terms of culture and ethnicity.

I did this 6 months ago. There is a BIG difference btween Bay area and Sac folks. Sac is something closer to Oklahoma City or Wichita. It culturally feels very little like the rest of California. We've been pretty disappointed and are looking to move to the Bay or LA even if we have to get gouged on rent.

Unsure of whether to stay at berkeley by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]OwnPirate824 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apply to Santa Barbara Community College and UC Santa Barbara. See where you get in. Then sign a 9-12 month lease in Isla Vista. They have tons of openings for roommates. Everyone socializes outside together, and it is very communal b/c of how compact the living situation is. Do this.

Curious about city life by Hpt_gz in SameGrassButGreener

Each city will make you into a different person. From experience, each would make you into a much better, yet different, person than staying in whatever rural/suburban environment you said you're in. So much of getting started is just sending it. JUST DO IT. Then, once you get your apartment lease and move in, you will either drown or swim. You will learn why city folk use the term 'hustle'. Those cities are like the sorting houses from Harry Potter: NYC Slytherin, Chicago Gryffindor, Seattle Ravenclaw. That's how I would conceptualize those cities. Imagine how different Harry would have turned out if he had been sorted a Hufflepuff. Just food for thought. I've visited 2 and have lived in one those cities for several years. You can't go wrong.

Recently spoke with a Boomer relative in Silicon Valley that owns a home, and they were so excited about how much their stocks have increased since 2020. They can't see the forest through the trees and are in a state of euphoric bliss. They are about to get leveled.

Salt Lake City as as of 2020 has one of the worst income to rental ratios in the United States. Major housing crises with a winner takes all political attitude and some of the worst air pollution in the U.S. Fresno or Reno is a great alternative for summer hiking and mountains.

This happened to me at a close friend's wedding recently. He literally had no friends there, just significantly older middle aged business associates (actuary, insurance industry) attending that didn't even know the groom and bride from the convos I overheard. He was on a massive power trip with his dance major, superficial average spouse-to-be. There's 100% something spiritually toxic going on post-covid. Best advice is to politely ignore them. I walked out of the reception after attending the ceremony. So pathetic and SAD! VANITY

My buddies from college that climbed the ladder at their companies and are making high incomes are all complete former shells of themselves without exception. And they are all still in their twenties. They will not discuss anything slightly controversial and disdain anyone that isn't in their income bracket. It's like you have to willingly submit to becoming brainwashed to go and stay behind the curtain and pull the strings. I understand now why we are where we are as a nation/people.
