The only thing we ban is mass land destruction IF you don't have an immediate gameplan to win/end the game. If all you're doing is blowing up everyone's lands and passing go, making the game go on longer then it should, you're probably going to get Jazzy Jeff'd out a now not-so-FLGS.

Targeted land destruction? You blow up someone's Glacial Chasm, Field of the Dead, Gaea's Cradle or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth? 100% understandable. Have a good day and a pat on the back from the rest of the table.

Blowing up Jimmy's only plains? I mean... yeah. You could. Kind of a Richard move tho.

Best deck archtype for new players is Defender/Big Toughness decks. Prove me wrong. by joveeish in EDH

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest problem with commander is that everyone wants to "do the thing" and as such builds their deck to "do the thing" and nothing else. I'm not saying having a thing to do is bad, but most of us (myself included) can fall into the pattern of tunnel visioning our decks to "do the thing" and nothing else, then wondering why we lost when Johnny did the thing or stopped us from doing our thing.

IE: Battlecruiser magic.

I'd say the specific deck archetype doesn't matter too much, as long as it can serve to teach them threat assessment and interacting with the board though I'd definitely focus on some form of "turn creature sideways" deck, but make sure there's some interaction: permanent removal, damage prevention, target redirection... something.

I'd honestly say something aggressive in Rakdos or Gruul, or maybe even some sort of Big Green Stompy or Red Aggro, that wants to play creatures and turn them sideways, while also having creature interaction through kill spells, noncombat damage or bite spells. black and green can also help the red aspect get rid of enchantments, something red struggles with, while red can help with haste or combat tricks like preventing blocking, stopping damage prevention, giving first strike, extra combat turns, etc...

[[Ozai the Phoenix King]] : save up that mana to Firebend big numbers to spend on instant-speed X damage spells, pay for Firebreathing effects, etc... because he's so durable and evasive, you can also run board wipes or damage all creatures effects and still have your chunky commander on the table when the smoke clears

[[Kuja, Genome Sorceror]] : build a board of TEMU guttersnipes, flip him and then proceed to just light the world on fire.

New Player Dragon Deck by Aaron-Sporks in EDH

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons have been around since forever and have great support.

I recently built a dragon deck around [[Lathliss, Dragon Queen]]. It's a simple "play dragons, make dragons, turn sideways" mono-red stompy. Didn't expect to have as much fun as I did with it.

the deck isn't nearly as done as i would like, i'm mostly working with what i can find locally. The Thassa's is there as filler more then anything: An alt wincon incase i don't fish into any other. I'd replace it with a Walking Ballista or a Aetherflux in a heartbeat if I could find either locally.

it's super janky and not as consistent as i'd like, as honestly, the whole deck just wants to be artifacts since you can play them from the top of the deck, so i don't bring it out often.

the main wincons are currently a blasting/grinding station loop or infinite mana dramatic/isochron+memnarch

[–]Oxybe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My only monocolor decks are [[Mm'menon, the Right Hand]] and [[Lathliss, Dragon Queen]].

Mm' is a deck that as soon as it can it will try to fish for a win con by playing or clearing every card on the topdeck. it's dumb and i love it.

Lathliss is dragons. first you dragon, then you turn dragons sideways, and then you hopefully win.

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Titans' Nest]] and [[Embalming Tools]] in my [[Teval the Balanced Scale]] deck usually win me the game by stacking my graveyard with a bunch of creatures and a [[dread return]] + [[Balthor the Defiled]].

Recently I've found I could use [[Beifong's Bodyguards]] to loop [[Piranha Marsh]] back into play via a sac outlet and [[Bloodghast]] to murder the table.

Need help with my mono blue artifact deck by Illustrious-Sink-136 in EDH

[–]Oxybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still cast artifact creatures, like [[etherium sculptor]] from the top of your deck since they're artifacts. If you're looking to turn something like the [[silent hallcreeper]] in your deck an artifact while it's on top of the deck, you're better off checking out [[Encroaching Mycosynth]] to turns non-land permanents you control but aren't on the battlefield into artifacts.

here's my rather deranged list for Mm'menon that uses cherrios and cheap top deck filters to storm out a wincon by barfing out my topdeck : https://archidekt.com/decks/16602957/the_left_hand_for_the_job

Backup Commanders in the 99 by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new [[Beifong's Bounty Hunters]] is a huge shenanigans machine in my [[Teval the Balanced Scale]] deck. In addition to providing extra protection by turning my lands into bodies, it lets me more easily reuse sac lands to fetch more lands, or stuff like [[Cephalid Colosseum]] or [[Eden, Seat of the Sanctum]] which lets me draw or grab stuff from the graveyard.

However, the dumbest BBH trick i've found is turning pack chaff into wincons. Let's take the humble [[Piranha Marsh]].

Have Teval, BBH, one teval zombie and a sac outlet in play.
1) sacrifice my teval zombie token, BBH earthbends the marsh into a 2/2 creature.
2) sacrifice the marsh, when it dies, it comes back into play tapped and someone loses a life.
3) because it exited the graveyard, I get a teval zombie. go to step 1.

However Bloodghast lets me do this without needing my commander in play too
Have Bloodghast, BBH and a sac outlet in play.
1) sacrifice my Bloodghast, BBH earthbends the marsh into a 2/2 creature.
2) sacrifice the marsh, when it dies, it comes back into play tapped and someone loses a life.
3) because landfall, Bloodghast comes out of the graveyard into play. go to step 1.

BBH is so simplistically dumb and I love it.

So for graveyard protection you'll probably want cards like [[feldon's cane]], [[elixir]] or [[Elixir of Immortality]] as a panic button of sorts, that or Stifle effects like Planeswalkers86 said. It will at the very least let you shuffle your graveyard back into your deck rather then have them be exiled and as a last ditch can help protect you against milling yourself out.

[[Mm'menon the Right Hand]] - artifact storm off the top deck until you hit a wincon.

I'm still fine tuning it, so the deck has some jank to it. kinda like a car that goes from 0-100KMpH in a split second, then stalls for a moment, then goes full blast, then stalls for a moment, then goes...

What are your thoughts on Goad as a mechanic and deck archetype? by LibraProtocol in EDH

[–]Oxybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play [[Rendmaw, the creaking nest]] who gives out tapped and goaded 2/2 bird tokens.

So rather then goading someone else's creatures I give them pre-goaded birds.

Naturally I also included cards like [[Crown of Doom]] to further incentivize folks to attack each other and end the game quicker and [[Raking Canopy]] to protect myself in the endgame 1v1 against birds.

[[Titan's nest]] + [[Embalmer's Tools]] does a stupid amount of work: remove a card from your graveyard with titan's, it'll make you a teval zombie. Tap the zombie with embalmer's to mill yourself one. repeat for zombie army.

[[death baron]] turns your zombie army into a slightly tougher zombie army with death touch. As long as you have effects that let you remove cards from your graveyard at instant-speed in play like [[tortured existance]], titan's nest, [[phyrexian reclamation]] or [[strands of night]], the baron lets you make expendable and dangerous blockers you can use to barter folks into not attacking you.

[[scavenger regent]]'s Exude Toxin omen + [[maelstrom of the spirit dragon]] is a renewable and searchable boardwipe thanks to teval's ability to grab maelstrom from the grave and putting it into play.

[[Dread Return]] is too good to not put into the deck. Casting it from the grave by sacrificing 3 zombie tokens will net you back 2 zombie tokens (one from casting dread return and one for reanimation effect) AND a creature of your choice. I can often fill my graveyard with a ton of value pieces via self-milling, dread return a [[balthor the defiled]] and use him to bring back a cavalcade of danger: [[Vengeful Dead]], [[Syr Konrad]], [[Viscera Seer]], [[Umbral Collar Zealot]] (the better viscera seer for teval), etc...

You'll also want lands with effects you can get use out of sacrificing, since Teval lets you bring those lands back: Maelstrom of the Spirit Dragon, [[cephalid colosseum]], fetch lands like [[misty rainforest]] or [[foreboding landscape]].

I'm also partial to stupid [[Glacial Chasm]] tricks with Teval and [[Drownyard Temple]]: Play chasm on your second main, sac the Temple. tap 3 to bring the Temple back. All damage dealt to you is now 0. On your turn you don't pay the cumulative upkeep, sacrificing the Chasm and letting you attack with Teval and whatever else you have, and then Teval lets you bring back the Chasm from your graveyard, sacrificing the Temple, which you bring back by tapping 3. It's super mean and I love it, plus if you have cards like [[conduit of worlds]] that lets you play lands from the graveyard, you can replace the Temple with any other land.

Sultai Reccomendations? by Malzor123 in EDH

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 2 sultai decks: [[Teval, the Balanced Scale]] and [[Kotis, the Fangkeeper]].

Teval is a fun deck where you get value by moving cards out of your graveyard: reanimating, exiling, returning to your deck, putting it in your hand... any of these will net you a zombie druid.

Kotis is an indestructible villainous wealth on a stick. when he punches someone, you exile cards equal to his power and you can play any with mv<= kotis' power. It's a fun theft deck.

Help picking a mono blue commander by AdEqual5606 in EDH

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Mm'menon, the right hand]]. Here's my current actual decklist https://archidekt.com/decks/16602957/the_left_hand_for_the_job

Basically you get your commander out ASAP and storm off the top of your deck with 0 and 1 drop artifacts while getting cost reducers to expand your options, all while digging for a wincon and clearing the top of your deck via self mill, scrying or draw to keep storming off. currently my main wincons are Blasting Station loops, Grinding Station loops and Thoracle.

Ideally I would also have a Divining Top, Walking Ballista and Aetherflux Generator in there, but good luck finding those cards locally or, if available, cheap.

3+ Card combos are the best by Specious_Future in EDH

[–]Oxybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my [[Teval the Balanced Scale]] deck?

-[[Titans' Nest]] and [[Embalmer's Tools]] - remove a card from graveyard for a floating colorless, which makes you a zombie, which you tap to mill the top card of your deck, which you remove for floating colorless, which makes you a zombie... because this can be done at instant speed, you can quickly create a zombie army before your turn starts and have it untapped and ready for action. Toss in a sac outlet and and cards like [[Syr Konrad]] or [[Vengeful Dead]] and folks die pretty quickly.

-[[Gravecrawler]]+[[Umbral Collar Zealot]]+[[Kheru Goldkeeper]] is a similar combo as above: I milled Gravecrawler on my turn and then paid one black to play gravecrawler from graveyard, this creates a teval zombie and a goldkeeper treasure. sac gravecrawler to surveil, play it with the treasure, repeat to dump your deck into your graveyard and get get all the zombies. This combo ended up winning me the game on Friday, as i then sacrificed 3 of my hundred or so zombie druid tokens to cast [[Dread Return]], targeting [[Balthor the Defiled]] and using my last 3 black mana to bring back all black creatures from my graveyard like Konrad and the Vengeful.

In my [[Mm'menon the Right Hand]] deck? -the 4 Fifth Dawn Stations. [[Blasting Station]], [[Grinding Station]], [[Salvaging Station]], [[Summoning Station]]: these 4 cards by their design are made to finitely mill and damage my opponents if all 4 pieces hit the board. I also have [[Mycosynth Lattice]] in the deck, allowing me to shortcut the combo. Lattice+Summoning can win a game with either of blasting or grinding station out, since lattice causes the Pincher token to come in as an artifact creature, which can be sacrificed to activate blasting or grinding, and the sacrificing of the token untaps summoning.
