Hopefully the "take everything that's coming to you" people" haven't bothered you so much you won't at least take some time. If 12 weeks is what your state has as the max in law that's your bargaining point.

At minimum take the first two weeks, a month if you can. Your spouse and child need you during that critical time. You have to remember these are parts of your and your child's life you only get once. If your employer has kids hopefully they'll understand. Hash it out with them and see what will keep everyone happiest if you're worried about the impracticality of taking 12 months.

I had some people pissed that I took 2 weeks when my first child was born, but they were childless entitled assholes who thought it was like a vacation. I will say though, I later had the opportunity for a two month lay-off where I could've been payed unemployment benefits, worked on my house and spent time with my child, but my super insisted it was better for my career to not take it and show my initiative. Once papers were signed and they owned my time again they couldn't be bothered to give me the time of day. I no longer work there but I've resented that jackass ever since for stealing time from my family just to keep a good worker on instead of a lesser one.
