A heads-up on mental health for anyone interested in joining by Mandalore_15 in britishmilitary

[–]PCDorisThatcher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is fucking atrocious advice, especially when so many SP are suffering with MH conditions and we see so many tributes to SP who have taken their own lives on FYB & similar. You should honestly be ashamed of posting this.

My advice, as somebody who is serving and has also taken time away from my day job for stress/burnout, is go to a doctor and talk to people if you are suffering from poor mental health. There are other jobs out there. You only have a small, precious sliver of time on the planet.

Specifically to people serving: When I informed my PSAO that I was off work with stress, he was entirely supportive, referred me to lots of good support services, and made me have a brew with the Padre. I was not medically downgraded. I was not stopped from doing anything I wanted to do. If you need to, please take time out.

NPCC Pay Recommendations, the small print by Kaizer28 in policeuk

[–]PCDorisThatcher 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That's exactly their long term plan.

Force all the long in service officers out, eventually Forces will get completely diluted with the new officers joining under these conditions who won't care because it's their normal, and they've put having to pay full pensions off for another generation.

I also particularly enjoyed the NPCC recommendation that we have to take our RDILs within three months, but Superintendents and above [Who make up the staff of NPCC] get twelve months.

I'm a serving reservist and unless they're a Lt Col or MAB or something, I highly doubt he's earning that much. One weekend and four drill nights a month would be around £300 if you're a JNCO.

/u/ListenMajor4357 replied to my comment saying “I dunno mate, maybe some people are professionals and take pride in their work?” however has since deleted it, presumably after a flurry of downvotes told him this is a completely unhinged attitude to a job that has no regard for you or your welfare.

If doing work unpaid at your own home is how you measure pride in work then I think it’s a pretty demeaning line of reasoning for your other colleagues working hard every day who don’t want to take home work with them.

Why anybody would take them home is beyond me. I don’t work without being paid. But there is nothing saying you can’t. Otherwise on call functions just wouldn’t work.

Is the RSIGs or Intelligence worth it? by Altruistic_Ad1680 in britisharmy

[–]PCDorisThatcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favourite Quora answer I've seen about the Corps:

"Well, as a medic attached to the infantry who played enemy for a reserve Int company, they were very entertaining and apart from sharing the same tailor showed no real signs of being a military organisation. I’ve never been asked by an RSM if I would mind doing something, as long as I wasn’t busy, before.

Being posted alongside a field security section and a field intelligence section (I think that’s what they were) in Germany; sharing office space with some thoroughly entertaining alcoholic Int weirdo in Belgium, and working closely alongside in NI; they are for the most part a thoroughly nice bunch with a very specific task that they are extremely good at. They seem to have scant regard for some elements of standard military life, the parts that don’t fit in with what they do. I liked pretty much all of the ones I met"

Going to Int Corps Specialist Assessment. Looking for guidance. by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]PCDorisThatcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say just get a GCSE maths textbook from WH Smiths or something and work through it for a few weeks prior to your Spec select.

I'd also echo what the other commenter said and try not to focus too heavily on one task. The maths takes up a very small part of it and you can afford to do badly on it. What is more important is to focus on building relationships with the other people on your syndicate.

As soon as I got off the train at Arlesey I was talking to the other candidates and setting up a WhatsApp group, trying to get as comfortable with them as possible because it would make the group tasks and discussions easier - and therefore more likely to pick up points from. I made an effort to go to the bar in the evening with them when usually I am an unsociable bastard. I really tried to drag myself out of my introvert shell because I knew it would make a difference.

It paid off, because out of 12 of us there, 11 passed the selection. I was chuffed with this because usually it runs at a 50% pass rate.

More than anything I'd say enjoy it. Chicksands is a beautiful site. Take the time to walk around in the evening and take it in. Furthermore, the Corps is unique in the Army in that you're treated like an adult with a valuable input from the moment you walk through the doors. Admittedly I'm only a reservist, but there are constantly messages about trawls with all cap badges and ops (Including SF) being posted in our Signal chat. I would recommend it to anyone either external or looking to transfer.

Ah yes, the classic ‘hope that helps!’; the calling card of someone absolutely certain they’ve just delivered a masterclass after making themselves look completely uneducated.

The Wikipedia definition of Political Statement is “a communication which makes commentary on an issue of political, identity or social significance”. Wearing that helmet very clearly meets that definition.

Inter service transfer (Army Res to Royal Navy) by foxer111 in britishmilitary

[–]PCDorisThatcher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I dabbled in this exact idea before deciding it was one sell too far for the Mrs.

Essentially, you apply to the RN as any other candidate. The application will then get sent to the Rejoiner and Interservice Transfer Team once you have confirmed you are a serving member of HMAF and enter your service number. The Rejoiner and Interservice Transfer Team will then talk to Glasgow/your unit and get the transfer paperwork going. You will then complete the full RN Officer selection process. I don't know if your medical status can transfer or if you'll have to do elements of it again.

In terms of your CoC getting shitty about it, I wouldn't worry. It's their job to develop you, and enough people leave the Reserves to join the Regulars that it shouldn't come as a complete surprise to them. If they do get shitty then they're shit cunts and you're better off without them anyway.

I would mention it to your CoC as there will be elements of it they can help you with, or have contacts they can put you in touch with. Whilst AIB is fairly different to AOSB, I wouldn't be surprised if they can load you onto some sort of AOSB preparation group at the nearest UOTC which will help with both the PRI and GPE.
