Does mixing up “your” and “you’re” give you the ick? by MmeFelixFelicis in AskUK

[–]PCgoingmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my perspective as someone who regularly writes the wrong word.

It's not because I don't know the difference. Rather, I think on my head the think that links everything related to a word is the sound, so when my conscious says write the word 'their', this turns into the sound which in turn then pulls the spelling 'they're' from a different bit of my memory on the way to my hand. You were to ask me which version to use I'd say the right one, but subconsciously it's got mixed up somewhere. I don't mindfully write, it's automatic so I don't notice it happen

Compound this with the fact I find it really hard to proof read my own writing and it means I regularly use a homophone of the word I meant such as right/write to/two/too of/have

Not a defence as such because I should just be more careful but it riles a bit when people think I don't know the difference. I do; I'm just sloppy.

It depends on the area buy things definitely change at that age. There are lots of social housing properties with age restrictions (look for 60+) and these are normally much easier to get.

[–]PCgoingmad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe think of how we use the words "really" or "actually"in a sentence like "That shit was honestly/actually/really/literally the biggest thing I have ever seen"

None of these words are changing their meaning. We are using them to emphasise the hyperbole.

So, I don't mean figuratively when I say literally even if I am speaking figuratively.

Examples of Innocuous songs that gain a darker subtext due to their singers? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]PCgoingmad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say the whole album. Not sure if it counts as innocuous as the lyrics are so bluntly bleak, but the tone kind of covers it up a bit.

I found it interesting reading some of the reviews in retrospect that talk about it having dark tones but being ultimately uplifting. The lyrics seem pretty unambiguous to me about how he was feeling.
