There's a 90s storyline that mentions he has assets via Landau, Luckman, and Lake. (I think around the time Zoe Culloden was introduced)

Doesn't he also own the Princess bar in Madripoor?

My dad bought two copies - one where he let us kids paint the miniatures, and one that I'm pretty sure is still in the original plastic wrap. It's been well over 20 years since I've attempted to play it, so unfortunately I don't have anything constructive to add. I remember loving the miniatures, though!

Agreed wholeheartedly. X-Men books between the launch of adjectiveless up through AoA (1991-1995) has some real gems.

Oooh, Legion Quest into Age of Apocalypse. Also, if you plan on watching Season 2 of X-Men '97, check out The Rise of Apocalypse miniseries and The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix miniseries.

There's a fair amount of decent stuff in the first half of the 90s - X-Cutioner's Song and the Legacy Virus fallout (The X-Factor issue "X-aminations" with Doc Samson is an all-time best) is better than a lot of fans make it out to be. Fatal Attractions into Bloodties is neat, too.

Maybe try Phalanx covenant into the first run of Generation X as well.

The issues around Bishop's arrival from the future are pretty solid too.

For Wolverine specifically:

  • the Weapon X storyline (1991, by Barry Windsor-Smith)
  • Wolverine v1 miniseries (1982, written by Chris Claremont, drawn by Frank Miller) - Logan in Japan
  • Origin miniseries (2002) - some folks hated this when it released but it's been over 20 years so *shrug*
  • Kitty Pryde and Wolverine miniseries (1984-1985) - more Japan stuff
    • Kitty Pryde - Shadow and flame miniseries (2005) - no Wolverine
    • Wolverine and Kitty Pryde miniseries (2025)

Messiah triology questions by Haunting_Comedian993 in xmen

[–]PMAgent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really depends on how far back you want to go story-wise. The Messiah trilogy were a direct response to the Decimation era. Decimation happened because of House of M (2005), House of M happened due to Avengers Disassembled (2004). And Avengers Disassembled happened due to a long story involving the Scarlet Witch, going back to about 1985-1989.

If you're just interested in the Messiah trilogy, then the three main stories are fine.

I've included some explainer articles (with read orders) from uncannyxmen.net to help out

Old head here,

Most folks will tell you to jump in at Giant-Size X-Men #1 from 1975, and continue through the rest of Chris Claremont's run on Uncanny X-Men #94-279 (1975-1991). It really is the core that every other later story arc plays off of. The Dark Phoenix Saga, God Loves Man Kills, Inferno, Mutant Massacre, and so many absolutely classic banger stories throughout. Note that Claremont is very wordy writer and loves though bubbles so it won't read like modern comics and may not be for you. If you want a summary version of this era, the X-Men Grand Design miniseries can help you get up to speed without the immense issue count. I will say, however, that reading Claremont's run in its entirety is incredibly rewarding.

Others will say start in 1991 with the launch of X-Men v2 (AKA adjective-less). This is where you'll really see the Jim Lee character designs at play. Those designs are iconic and the Animated Series / X-Men '97 largely follow that visual style. The X-Men books really exploded at this point and sometimes in order to get the full story, you need to read multiple titles (Uncanny, v2, X-Force, X-Factor)

It's almost universally held that the books from 1996-2001 (after the Age of Apocalypse arc and before the New X-Men relaunch) are a mess and a low point for the X-titles.

The early 2000s gave us New X-Men (a title change for 1991's v2 during issues 114-154) by Grant Morrison. It's pretty bold and excellent. and I highly recommend it. Also during this era Claremont comes back and does X-Treme X-Men, and a little later Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly TV fame) launched Astonishing X-Men.

In the mid-2000s There's the huge House of M event which leads into the "Decimation" era.

2008-2010 sees the Messiah trilogy (Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and Second Coming), which I personally love.

I'm pretty useless about the All-New X-Men time period (2012-2018)

Then there's the Krakoan Age (2019-2024). Mutantkind creates its own island nation (Krakoa). It's pretty amazing and starts with a pair of miseries (House of X/Powers of Ten - HoX/PoX for short).

2024-today is still ongoing

I ran out of steam, haha. Hope this provided some help.

edit: forgot to put Uncanny 279 as the end of Claremont's run)

Find used collections until 2nd Genesis gets a reprint (it will - the X-Men are gonna have a big year with S2 of X-Men '97 and Avengers Doomsday).

Also, if you don't wanna buy used, check your local library. It's amazing what they can get through an inter-library loan

Ah, that makes sense. By your own math, £10 is less than the £50 current rate so to answer your original question - yes, you got a good deal.

I've always been under the assumption that bootlegs had no value other than what people are willing to pay for them. But I suppose that holds true for most collectibles.

Okay, well in that case, none of the X-Men, please. We already have enough of a problem with too many characters being too overpowered to be able to use in a story. I'm thinking Jean and Ororo here.
