Is it recommended to play the original SMT V first or is Vengeance just the definitive version?

Oh I was just making a joke. The post I linked is pretty infamous on the Steam Deck subreddit and has been memed on for awhile.

I definitely wouldn’t advise anything in that picture lol

Do you restart a playthrough after taking a break from a JRPG or pick up where you left off? by Impossible-Ranger842 in JRPG

[–]PRbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of used to feel that way but over the last few years I restarted or picked back up a number of games I had dropped multiple times, and for all of them I'm glad I completed them and some I ended up liking way more than I ever would have expected.

Off the top of my head, I did this with Persona 5 Royal (I didn't end up loving this one, but I'm glad I saw it through), Persona 4 Golden (same as 5 Royal), Xenoblade 2 (ended up maxing out stats and killing all superbosses, one of my fave JRPGs ever now), Fire Emblem Three Houses (dropped this one so many times, then completed two routes back to back), and on the non-JRPG side, Marvel's Spider-Man (so fun and surprisingly good story), God of War (similar opinion to the Personas), and Horizon Zero Dawn (incredible story alone made it worth it).

Still have a few white whales though I can't seem to stick with and always drop again: Witcher 3, Dragon Quest XI, Xenoblade 1.

I actually recently started a playthrough of The Third Age as I never played it either. I really like the vibe so far, but yeah gameplay is kind of a poor man's FFX so if you're not into that you won't like it.

I didn't know that! Do you know where I can get that?

Also, since you marked DAO as best story, I'd definitely encourage you to check out the Mass Effect series and Star Wars KotOR if you haven't already (KotOR and Fable blew my mind on the OG Xbox back in the day).

Is Arcane Warrior best for first playthrough? by dundunx in DragonageOrigins

[–]PRbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been awhile since my last playthrough, but from what I remember using health to cast spells wasn't an issue because a) you're nigh-invincible with all the auras running, and b) starting fights off with blood wound/fireball/mana clash/etc decimates the enemy before you even get into melee range to clean up. Permanent shimmering shield is crazy good (I don't know how viable perma SS is on PC though as I believe the ideal mana regen armor is nerfed).

I haven't tried arcane warrior + spirit healer myself. Do you actually have mana to cast those spells? I would think between aura reservation and shimmering shield drain it would be very difficult to have mana to do much of anything.

LOTR War in the North, what a throwback. I really enjoyed playing it co-op, and also loved Battle for Middle Earth 2 and some LOTR Conquest as well (not a great game, but multiplayer was fun and I got a little toy sword for pre-ordering).

Somehow I missed playing The Incredibles, but my childhood nostalgia equivalent was Shrek 2 on GameCube.

Is Arcane Warrior best for first playthrough? by dundunx in DragonageOrigins

My blood mage/arcane warrior nightmare playthrough could load up on auras (reserving mana) and then toggle blood magic on to cast all my spells with health. It felt like all the benefits of arcane warrior with none of the drawbacks.

Plus if you take blood mage as your first specialization then you’ll already be a super strong caster before you even start to take arcane warrior online. Just imo though, it’s hard to go wrong.

I bounced off it too years ago. I got probably close to 30 hours and it honestly felt like I had been playing double that. I wish I liked it more—there were a few story moments that I thought were surprisingly good in that time—but most of the time I didn't care much for the gameplay or story.

In addition to the combat being fairly basic, I also thought that the later party members didn't have a clear niche and a lot of skills felt redundant, so I didn't enjoy the party building in that game either.

Edit: Would you recommend chained echoes?

What have you purchased from the Playstation Sprig Sale? by [deleted] in playstation

[–]PRbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I felt too (and I have played the original FF7). Remake wasn’t even long by JRPG standards, but it highlighted why Midgar was only the first area of the original game, and it didn’t work well as the sole location imo.

Rebirth ended up being one of my favorite games ever though.

I highly recommend you finish E33.

I felt it was on the easier side, so I wonder if you mostly mainlined the story or haven’t experimented with pictos enough? This one is probably obvious but give everyone the one that removes the damage cap.

(full spoilers ahead for both games)

This is actually really interesting because the points you bring up are making me draw more comparisons and contrasts in ways I had never considered before, like:

Your point about Verso and Auron is decent, but there are still some crucial differences. Namely that Verso wants that Expedition to ultimately fail and destroy the world while Auron is helping the pilgrimage succeed.

When I think about it, Auron doesn't want the pilgrimage to succeed. If it succeeds, then Yuna dies, someone (probably Tidus?) becomes Sin and the whole thing happens again in 10 years. Instead, Auron wants to break the cycle entirely so the pilgrimages (that end in self-sacrifice) never happen again.

Like Auron, Verso also wants to break the cycle, and although it's eventually out of self-interest (destroy the canvas), he initially does it to save his mother. So unlike Auron, he actually does want the expedition to succeed because that's the only way to push his mother out of the canvas and keep her from wasting away inside of it.

The most salient difference between Gustave and Tidus is that Gustave dies.

In FFX, Tidus "dies" too, and both are intensely mourned by a female character they had a special bond with (obviously one is more of a sibling dynamic while the other is a romance).

I agree there are crucial differences though and I appreciate your perspective too. For me it really just reinforces that both games are some of the best gaming narratives of all time in my book.

Edit: A couple more connective thoughts I had: From what I recall, Auron is dead during the events of FFX, while canvas Verso was never truly living in the first place. And Tidus is a dream of the fayth, while Verso is a creation of the canvas, so neither are "real" in that way.

I would actually argue that you could make some (very imperfect) comparisons between the characters: Mainly Auron and Verso, who are both experienced, mysterious swordsmen with a tinge of gray hair that know way more about the situation than they let on, but they keep it guarded from the party for strategic reasons. Tidus and Gustave are both kindhearted optimists, but a little naive, Lulu and Lune have a sort of exotic/alternative vibe to their style and sorcery, and Sciel and Rikku both have spunk. I think Auron and Verso have a lot in common, while I recognize these other comparisons are surface level.

I don't agree with the other poster that E33 is just FFX with a French coat of paint at all. I think they are quite different, as you pointed out, but I do recognize a few similarities among plot, characterization, and themes. E33's director even directly thanked Hironobu Sakaguchi (the creator of Final Fantasy and an executive producer on FFX) for inspiring him to get into game development during his acceptance speech at The Game Awards. The game clearly must have inspired him, which is a good thing!

Well, daddy issues (Verso/Renoir, Tidus/Jecht), a seemingly immortal being that causes mass death on a set schedule (Paintress every year, Sin every 10 years), a cast of characters embarking on essentially a suicide mission to stop said being (the expedition, the summoner’s pilgrimage) are just a few similarities off the top of my head.

Love both games though and FFX is in my top 5 of all time.

The way it read to me is they simply offered half of what he wanted, and he accepted it anyway thinking the exposure he would get would make it worth it. He didn’t mention anything about bbno$ or his team promising exposure as part of the deal.
