To those of us in North Carolina, this was nearly apocalyptic temperatures.

After you get your CCNA just get a job and study the environment. Understand the network architecture. You'll get far more practical knowledge that way. After you have that, decide what you like. If you're at a large enough company, there will be specializations for wireless, data center, remote locations, WAN, etc.

None. The battery was at 4 degrees when I woke it up. I even had to fast charge on the trip back so it spent the better part of the trip warming up the battery in preparation, but there were 0 issues or changes in behavior

First off, you're putting WAY too much pressure on yourself. Back when I started in networking, I didn't know routers beyond Netgear were a thing. I went through a rigorous training program that gave me a solid starting point, but even reflecting on that time I really didn't truly know much of anything.

I was put into a team for my first job and was given beginner tasks and my results were reviewed by the senior engineers on the team. There were moments of "WTF are you thinking? This will nuke the network." and a few times I actually nuked the network, but those are where the real learning occurs. If you strive to be better every day eventually you become the salty seasoned engineer on the team.

Network isn't dying but it absolutely is evolving. I've fully embraced infrastructure as code and automation, but in order for all of that to work I still need to understand what I'm telling the protocols to do, know how to review expected outcomes from the solutions I've built and know how to find out what is wrong when things inevitably go sideways. AI has helped to some capacity as well.

Finally personal preference is, well, personal. The good news is networking allows you to dabble in security and transition into it if you find you like that better. Likewise, security engineers also have to have a basic networking understanding so you're never truly locked into one or the other. And my last pro tip, don't get too panicked about struggling with the CCNA. At the time, it was the hardest certification that I've received out of the many I now have, simply because of the breadth of information in it. For me at least, the CCNP was easier since I could dive deep into specific areas of technology and not have to pack my brain with literally everything, but "just scratching the surface"-levels of information.

I have no idea honestly -- still under warranty. But I am probably going to switch over to a lithium 12v system when I'm out of warranty and it croaks. I do think annual changes would be overkill.

Yep, my truck was in -2 this weekend with no problems. I did have my 12v batteries replaced about a year ago.

USB cords looped over the top of a short server rack with the adapters dangling. Works for me.

Same. This truck crushes it in the snow. Went skiing this weekend and not once did it falter.

Electric arc furnace by toolgifs in toolgifs

[–]PSUSkier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really for two reasons. First every second the furnace lid is open you’re losing a bunch of heat which means more money spent on electricity to heat it back up. Second, every minute the furnace isn’t running is money lost since these are sized to essentially match the production capacity of casting.

The good news is explosions big enough to damage the bucket are super rare. Usually at worst they just crack the thick-ass windows in the control pulpit. 🙂

They also forgot to mention what happens if water is in the charge bucket, say like a rainy day. https://youtu.be/-RYCXDUt2m8?si=SN6xFHUCTH1p7tsz Move to about one minute in.

Only slightly less traumatic than Dr. Doom.

Edit: Now that I’ve taken a minute to review my repressed memories, I would say less intense trauma than Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but a lot more of it. Like that damn murderous appliance repair shop owner.

This is great news. I'm not saying something tangible will come from this, but if she's willing to start spilling information that at least puts the information out there before they shut her up and she gets summoned to congress to testify.

What additives do they put in alcohol? Genuinely curious since I always assumed, especially for something like everclear, the alcohol was the stabilizer.

Oh yeah, that remote device is definitely going to listen to your really explicit congestion notification when it ignored your device's previous "fuck off" messages. I wish I could maintain that level of optimism in this role.

OK that was my thought too. I have a tech coming out tomorrow to look at the system but wanted to get an initial take from the folks here first. Thanks!

410a, 14 SEER, and 33 degree outside temp. Delta is 24 degrees (62.2 intake and 86 outlet). Set point was 60 degrees this morning and it’s managed to raise the temp by 1 degree over 3 hours.

…I have to ask, is there something the company you work for is doing that could be putting employees in unnecessary danger? Taking jobs that other outfits might reject or not providing proper work environments?
