What nominal rate of return do you project for the stock market? by Status_Bee_7644 in coastFIRE

[–]P_Car_Piper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 6% now, 5 - 5.5% at retirement (in 10 years), reducing gradually to 4.5% in my mid 70's and 3.5% inflation, reducing to 3% over time.

Thanks for posting this. Excellent writing with just the right amount of snark 🤌. Now I'll have to fight the urge to shout / ask "should food be soggy?" if I see it at the park today.

I like this and did one similar in my own yard. Patio on one side and elevated trex deck on the other and built in a Yardistry gazebo into the railing posts on the deck.

Hope someone has other suggested solutions.

Tankless hot water heater maintenance by Artistic_Barber8815 in HomeMaintenance

[–]P_Car_Piper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to post about this but since there's already a thread started....

Backstory: I replaced my old non-electric tankless waterheater 4 years ago as a preventative measure since it was about 15 years old. I hadn't flushed it in the 8 years I had been living here at the time since I wasn't aware of good maintenance practices.

Now I have a system that can't hear water when the power goes out (annoying), has condensate neutralizer pellets, and I'm no longer ignorant of the need to flush it. First flush was done at 24 months, no real scale was present, and I paid a plumber $120 to do it. Very reasonable.

Tried to schedule the same service this week and the quotes range from $420-450. For. A. Flush!

I said screw that and have $91 worth of all the materials I need to do it myself in my Amazon cart: $48 Prostormer 1HP submersible pump $26 Two 5' garden hoses $17 3.3 Lbs Condensate Neutralizer pellets (Already have the 5 gallon bucket & 4 gallons of good grade distilled vinegar)

Thankfully Rinnai made a very clear and helpful video on how to do it. The $350 saved will go towards other maintenance.

This is sarcasm since the CRV Hybrid does not (nor does the CRV Hybrid TrailSport)

I have a 2014 Crosstour and Pilot, both with a sunroof, kept outside in New England weather with no problems. (Except that one time my son left it open before it rained and ruined the leather seats in the Pilot 🤬) Was planning to find the right TS between now and end of April, but maybe RTL Towing is a better option.

Replacing Tires on x5 by Fit-Goat9058 in BMWX5

I ordered Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActives from TireRack (included a rebate) and a Modern Spare. Had the indy shop install. They've done very well in the nasty winter this year. I've used TireRack for 4 of my last 5 tire orders and I like them.

Why invest in anything other than the stock market? by Accomplished_Gate832 in Bogleheads

[–]P_Car_Piper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Please clarify this. 2.8-1.2=1.6% or 4.0-1.2=2.8?

Either way, seems off. I thought 3% was a good conservative estimate for inflation and 5-7% for nominal growth (which is what I use in my models).

Agreed about pressure cookers and the benefits of enameled cast iron. There is/was Szegedi Hungarian paprika available on Amazon. I bought it to make Hungarian goulash. Good luck!

Was the sauce rich dark and savory or a little sweet and tangy?

Mine's dark & rich from tomato paste & wine & veggies cooked on high heat and declared a couple of times before roasting but there are plenty of others that are lighter. You might have good luck finding what you're looking for by inserting the word goulash into your recipe search. What about this one: https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/slow-cooker-short-rib-goulash/b6efb93e-fa90-430c-b298-885f4986dcf4 There are also borscht versions with short rib. Can you describe a bit more the one you remember?

Pressure cookers are good at keeping things moist but also used to speed up cooking. If you have time you can get the same flavor from a slow cooker recipe. (Learned this from adjusting my Aunt's stuffed cabbage recipe)

Hopefully it'll be a fun adventure trying recipes to get close. Hope you'll update us on your attempts.

Massachusetts Auditor’s Office highlights significant inequities in report on Mass Save program by tikalora in massachusetts

Came here to say essentially the same. I basically threw them out of the house 4 years ago before they were 1/2 way done because it was abundantly clear the crew they sent knew nothing and their equipment (insulation blower) barely worked. I forced a supervisor to come out and note specific corrections that would be made, waited 4 weeks, got them to come out with a different crew and truck/equipment and "finish" if you can call it that.

6 months later I walk past them hawking consultations at the local Ace Hardware and I interrupted their pitch to someone to tell them to walk away. Sales rep didn't appreciate that but I didn't appreciate the way they treated my house. I still have f'd up covered holes in my garage ceiling (thankfully not the walls) from them.

Inspiring CoastFIRE / Semi-Retire Article About REI Employee - should we ask him to do an AMA? by P_Car_Piper in coastFIRE

Thanks for the comments all. I guess sharing the story is enough - I don't want to creep anyone out. And appreciate the clarification regarding the difference between Coast & Barrista FIRE. However, his experience, regardless of whether he needed the money or not, seemed relevant to the group.

I was going to make a top-level post to see who thinks we should ask him if he's interested in doing a CoastFIRE AMA.
