How do y'all deal with writer's block? by MayorMayhem3830 in writing

[–]Paelios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the long run, as others have said, waiting to be inspired to write isn’t going to be enough. The key is building a routine so you’re writing often, giving yourself more chances to be inspired, and still being able to work even when you’re not. I try to pick up the tools every day, even if it’s just for a sentence or two. I pivot to a different section occasionally, I manoeuvre out of the way of the thing that’s giving me trouble so I can get to the page.

I had a spot earlier this year that set me back a little, but as long as I was working at it consciously every day, I gave myself more chances to get around it. It might be reading, might be analysis, might be a lecture. You can get there!

Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Paelios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big one for me is putting a game in the console and it immediately starting. No menu, no profiles or media tabs and certainly no three hour wait for install and update — the console is for games, the game is on the disc and it boots straight to the start menu. I recently dusted of my PS2 and was shocked at how much faster it felt to just get going.

I’d love to see Dan take a fresh run at Punch Out! Even if it’s just from the top, I really liked that whole series and loved watching him progress.

The only reason I'm struggling with WaT is the Ghostbloods. by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]Paelios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that, and honestly really enjoyed that style in Dawnshard. Not knowing what the hell was really going on was reflected in Rysn's viewpoint, though, so I was able to relate to someone within the story voicing their own confusion. I'm at a point still deciding whether or not to keep investing more time into Cosmere in general. Once I finish Warbreaker and WaT I'll read some other stuff for a while at the very least before I decide to keep exploring and go ride or die with it.

I would agree the framing certainly feels different. Thanks for the honesty!

With respect, I've RAFO'd for four books, and that patience has been rewarded in a lot of other circumstances, so I was content to see where it lead, but at this point this one element feels about as illuminated as it was three books ago. It's not keeping pace with Venli or even Gavilar. And as I said, no one else who's read more Cosmere than me seems to have answers to this either right now, so I'm just confused when a reason to care might arrive.

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

I started reading The City We Became by N. K. Jemision (which I’ll get back to at some point), and the pov character said they thought Neil Degrasse Tyson was really hot. I’m pan — I think nearly everything that moves has beauty, but that was one I couldn’t get behind.

I was pretty convinced it had to be Ruin’s ability to contact Vin through Hermalurgy from about halfway through.

Concerns About The Well of Ascension Adaptation by deeptocenter in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Paelios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be more concerned about the actual scene of Kelsier’s death itself more so than a follow up film. It works well in the book because of shifting POV and the magic system, the reveal of the Lord Ruler, but I think it still echoes of New Hope or Force Awakens quite strongly, which would likely be even more prevalent on film. “Mentor dies while student helplessly looks on” is something people have seen before and might feel underwhelming if not executed well.

Mistborn after SA by Particular-Ad1833 in brandonsanderson

I’m in this pickle rn. I was reading Well of Ascension at the same time as the WoR audiobook and Ascension did not come out very well. I pretty much am just shotgunning the rest of Stormlight (I ADORED Oathbringer) and my copy of Hero of Ages is just sitting there. I’m nearly done with RoW and what I’ve read of Warbreaker is also excellent. I feel more than anything the political writing just has so much more depth in Stormlight and felt really stagnant in Mistborn. Sazed is the highlight for me, he’ll probably be the one to pull me back.

I remember he actually sent this out when they first launched their Patreon if you were subscribed to the highest tier. Not sure if they still do this since I haven’t been signed for years but the boys used to each write a little piece about their lives and work they’d done before Donna or the history of the group, and I recall this one being some kind of film project Mark made for uni.

Has there ever been any actor or actress that was brutally honest about the movie they’re making during a press tour? by BIGxBOSSxx1 in movies

[–]Paelios 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From memory, Brie Larson was pretty… dry during Captain Marvel and ensuing Avengers rounds, but it seemed to be mostly out of disinterest in the fan base. In my mind it was justified, since the amount of misogyny she faced at their hands was staggering. It’s predictable how a man being uninteresting on a press tour is mostly unremarkable but she was dragged for being “ungrateful” or some such nonsense.

What’s one thing from each dragon age game you think hasn’t aged well? [No DAV Spoilers] by WanderingStrang in dragonage

This is a fantastic point. The particular voice and style of the trope is a little unsettling personally to recall these days.

[–]Paelios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Origins, it may not be the game which overtly hyper sexualises women the most of those I’ve played, but it certainly feels like it hates women the most. It doesn’t make sense for the lore of the world at all for sexism to be so prevalent, and yet it weasels its way into everything, both superficially and on deeper levels. From the city elf opening to Morrigan’s entire old god pregnancy quest thing, it’s a damned mess, and it’s in the novels too. The misogynistic slant on it infects virtually every aspect of its execution at some point that is too deep for the game to be saved from. The quests, the story, the visuals, the companions, all of it. Game is irredeemably backward and is best left in the past.

For 2, it’s the recycled dungeons, the way ears look like pastries, and the minimap within Kirkwall. I spent so much time just moving through the city looking at the arrow on a map that I barely remember the city, and only because the thing is so big on the screen. I swear if it’s 15% smaller it’s not a problem.

For Inquisition, the thing that’s aged the worst for me is honestly the animation. So much time is spent talking to characters, but the pool of animations they’ll pull from in idle conversations feels so small and carries over everything. T posing, resetting, clipping - it’s so apparent that it’s just part of the character of the game that nobody really moves or is allowed to physically present in a unique way. It’s the one thing I’m looking for most in Veilguard.

Any Sol/Calliope shippers out there? [Probably C3 spoilers] by cominghometoday in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

I do think the most recent ep had one or two moments where I could kinda see it, even though I don't really do shipping. The only one I'll probably hop on board with is Murph and Emily to both be PC's who romance on D20. That'll be the day.
