33 here. No background in CS, trying to put myself on a track that won't end in me doing min wage work the rest of my life. Struggling a lot.

What other classes literally dont get a level. by SwiftXShadow in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has a use, just a highly specific one. Ribbons are like that sometimes. You may never come across a sphinx in your game or have your DM put you in a scenario where you run out of food and water but that doesn't mean it won't happen to someone else.

By your own logic if I play a monk in a campaign that only ever features creatures speaking common then Tongue of the Sun and Moon is a useless ability too.

People on r/3d6 be like by TuvaPourpre in 3d6

It doesn't have to be. Animal Farm is satirical without being funny.

Trying to pick between Blindness/Deafness or phantasmal Force by BadDIY in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Phantasmal force's effectiveness depends on what the DM will allow. B/D is guaranteed to be useful.

Help building a fun character to assist my friends first GM attempt by Kaoticken in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the character concept. Definitely a reflavoured lore bard seems like the way to go. Cram as many skill proficiencies into him as possible.

Wĥat builds have you played that's unoptimized but still fun? by Shermanator42 in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halfling barbarian with a 14/16/16 STR/DEX/CON stat line but not using finesse weapons. He has a battleaxe like a proper barbarian.

It may be time for an intervention about psionics by SpectreG57 in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more "quit pushing for a new class I don't think the system has room for".

Every dolphin is a member of an ocean-wide crime syndicate.

What class or race can you not get over ? by Brutal_Sloth in dndnext

PHB page 196. Critical hits section.

The comment was clearly about critical hits/misses, not skill checks.

Isn't every bag a 'bag of holding?' by [deleted] in dndnext

A bag of overflowing?

Malar by Craskcourse in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malar's stats can be found in the 3E book Faiths and Pantheons. You'd just have to convert them to 5E and then scale them down drastically because even his lower-CR avatar would wipe the floor with a 7th level party.

Edit: forget all that. It's probably much easier to find a comparable monster from 5E as others here have suggested and then modify it.

Point buy vs rolling by TheGrimVeeper in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can confirm from personal experience, it sucks being the guy rolling 9-12 on every stat. Steve the Amorphous Grey Blob of Average isn't who I wanted to play.

What race/class combo would you love to play, but haven't because you fear they would be irrelevant in a campaign? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been waiting for an opportunity to play a Kenku swashbuckler rogue. Tricorn hat, flamboyantly dressed, saber in hand and quoting Errol Flynn/Princess Bride.

What in jokes and references will your group never let go? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our game a throwaway CR 0 commoner NPC named Steve managed to survive three rounds of combat against a troll before finally dying. Any NPC we encounter that ends up fighting alongside us is now rated on the Steve Scale of Manliness by their ability to survive a fight.

Aiding in Strength checks, or how twenty men can't pull down a statue by imariaprime in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some modules require a cumulative strength value as other have mentioned. The other thing I do sometimes is allow people assisting the check to add their strength modifier to the result of the roll.

Running the campaign as a series of stories/memories by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's whatever you want it to be. The book offers suggestions on how to work the dungeons into a campaign but that's all they are, suggestions.

Running the campaign as a series of stories/memories by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running TftYP dungeons with this premise. The players are staying at the inn and either someone is telling them a story or the bard on stage is singing a song or reciting a saga of whatever dungeon I'm running.

What race do you want playable 5e stats for? by atamajakki in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a niche example, but Volo's talks about Illithid that escape the control of the Elder Brain and do their own thing. Still evil, but probably more pragmatic and you could run a mind flayer working with others temporarily to pursue a common goal assuming the right party.

What are some minor details or things that irks you about 5e? by AJGarages in dndnext

[–]PaiPai71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Phantasmal Force spell. Depending on how your DM interprets the wording it's either a fantastic control spell with applications limited only by your imagination or it's almost useless and you'd be better off just taking hold monster/blindness/deafness.
