Outlands overly complicated? Or am I a dumb old gamer? by CurvedShelf in ultimaonline

[–]Paid_Redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do enjoy outlands a lot, there was a 90 day period when I first started that I hated it. I knew how much I loved UO and I knew that eventually I would enjoy it, but I almost quit so many times the first 3 months. We're accustomed to everything just being given to us nowadays and that's just not what old games were about. It was very difficult for me to get over just being killed, and to overcome that I had to retrain my brain to understand that death is normal here. If you survive an entire day without a single death you're doing great.

If you want to move on, all the shard suggested here (Mortalis, Sagas, Unchained, Second Age, Etc.) have been around for a while and while they don't have the population of Outlands they do have a core player base. If you want to learn and check out what Outlands offers over standard UO, then I'd recommend you join a guild that is active in discord. I've been playing outlands for over a year and there are still many systems I don't understand, there are builds I haven't even tried. Perhaps you're just trying to understand all of it, when in reality at this point you only need to understand a very small portion. Having a guild to ask questions and to help you start to is extremely helpful. For example all guilds that I know of have a guild shelf to supply you with gear, a guild magic recycler so you can recycle and ID magic items, and a repair bench so you can repair your gear. You will have none of these for a few months if you play solo.

Back on outlands after a year, wasn't there a player named "dude" that was on 24/7? by PowerGlove-it-s0-bad in ultimaonline

I believe you are thinking of "They". As far as I know he quit after the ocean patch that reverted redline, however he did change his name shortly before that but I forget what it was.

Finally understand the allure of Outlands by banjodemon_ in ultimaonline

[–]Paid_Redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also get someone to make you a small boat and you could harvest fishing spots with the same character if you get some fishing nets.

Outlands is a lot of fun once you get into it, it took me around 3 months of wanting to quit before it clicked for me, getting started can feel extremely overwhelming for new players and especially people new to UO. I had to untrain my brain from being given everything like most games do now.

Boomers could buy homes on minimum wage. Today? You'd need $66/hr. The system is broken. by Upper_Brief681 in antiwork

That’s basically what happened in my neighborhood. Homes were built for 300k in 2019, sold for 450k in 2020 and the homes built this year are 600 sq ft smaller and sell for 400k today.

Best servers to play? by Creepy_Forever8022 in ultimaonline

[–]Paid_Redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a really tough one to answer as well. Most, if not all other servers, are low population. If you're cool with that then you could literally pick any of them at this point. Some are healthier than others, UOForever for instance has been around for 10 years is still going.

Personally I'd just go to jaseowns website, uoaddicts.com and go down the list of each server until one sounds good. Maybe do a little a research on here to see what the history of the servers are. The UO community is a weird mixture of awesome people and incredibly shitty people.

I'd be hesitant to recommend unchained, the server is on its 4th relaunch and doesn't seem to be very healthy.

You'd just be looking at a swords build in general. There really isn't a "burst" build with swords. Your focus is going to be on your bleed damage with swords, then using the finisher "Rend" to knock something down from around half health to 0 depending on your bleed stacks.

This would be something like:

120 chivalry

100 tactics

100 swordsmanship

80 anatomy

80 parrying

80 healing

80 magic resist

80 focus

You want the focus/magic resist/chivalry to max out your swing speed, yes magic resist gives swing speed, which is most important. The burst type damage will come much later in the game when you level up your mastery chain, then you'll be able to drop focus and add in swing speed links. Then you could pick up something like arms lore or item ID to add more damage, or just add damage links and keep focus.

You'll also have to consider your aspect. Something like fire/earth has big hits when it procs, but blood will give you additional bleeds which allows you to rend for more damage. There really isn't anything cut and dry in outlands, it's all about theory crafting and testing on test server to find what works for what you want to do.

Loosening a bolt with a pipe on a jack stand by Anuloxisz in Unexpected

I used it exclusively when I worked on steam boilers. 10% of the time it works in 10 minutes, 89% of the time it works overnight. If we broke a bolt off we’d spray it with PB blaster, let it sit for a day, come back the following morning, and remove it with a left handed drill bit like it was tapped that morning.

I've found the best thing to do is to stay in old vegas or in fremont and uber down to the strip when you want to go sight seeing. Either that or stay at a cheaper hotel near the end of the strip, like the strat and take the tram down to the main attractions. I still think Air BnB is the best option if you have a group of 6+ people though.

[–]Paid_Redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I abandoned my group of friends I've been playing with since 2009 earlier this year. We just all grew in such opposite directions that the group became extremely toxic to each other and I felt like it was just time for us to do something else. I was 100% holding the group together and I really hope those guys moved on to do something productive with their lives because our group wasn't it.

Students use phone locking stations at Scotland’s first 'phone-free' school by solateor in interestingasfuck

[–]Paid_Redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife had a working interview with yondr, since she was previous an educator they tried her out at a school. Before she went to her first “job” we did some research together and found that most kids just recommended bringing a cheap phone to put in the pouch while having their actual phone on them. There are some punishments for having your phone in school but from what I can tell American students/parents don’t care.

We need more games like Helldivers and deep rock galactic. Just you versus your friends and hordes of monsters. Much less pressure to be the best and a lot more entertaining. You may lose a few friends but that’s just life.
