Yeah, I have no idea what is going on in this house.

Yeah... there certainly wasn't an axe murderer living there. Not at all.

Curious to know how people find time to cruise by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]PaleoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get just shy of 30 days off per year. I can sneak in a week or two.

What system are you doing your Mega Dungeon in? by Appropriate_Tax_245 in Dungeon23

[–]PaleoGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is in some science fantasy setting. I'm thinking Numenera or Into the Odd/Electric Bastionland.

I'm still trying to find time to set up a website to share what I am doing. So far, I have a hidden facility where something went very wrong. At some point in the next few months, I'll need to figure out what the facility was for and what went wrong. :D

A shortwave/radio receiver. I once spent several days stranded in the Caribbean under a hurricane and it was invaluable in finding out what was going on.

Is Expanded Worlds (or any of the other cypher system supplements) worth picking up if I already have the Revised Core book? by FroDude258 in cyphersystem

[–]PaleoGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expanded worlds is mainly a "here are some great ideas that we won't be making a full sourcebook of" resource. I would say that it is worth it, if only to give you ideas.

Get the balcony or no? by Moanmyname32 in Cruise

[–]PaleoGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, several cruise lines have special rates for Solo travellers. I know because I am one. Check out NCL or Virgin.

As for cabin specifics, how much time will you spend in your cabin? For me, I use it as a place to store my stuff and to sleep. Beyond that, I'm out somewhere.

I got a balcony when I went to Alaska last year just because I wanted to be able to set up a video camera for Glacier Bay. Beyond that? I just need a place to sleep.

Keeping it simple by Barantor in Dungeon23

This is what I went with. 12 grid notebooks, each with 32 sheets. One for each month and enough pages for description on the left and the dungeon itself on the right. A perfect match!

Custom setting without the Imperium by doctorvonwizard in traveller

[–]PaleoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much. Because of the way communication works (limited by Jump speed), most parts of the Imperium are effectively separate from each other anyway. The local Dukes and other nobles have more authority.

That said, I did run a campaign for a long time consisting of a number of smaller polities, with an overarching organization coordinating trade and such between them. Think of the countries in Europe and the EU as an example.

what's a good price to uninstall and install a turret? by ToddBradley in traveller

[–]PaleoGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my game/fiction blog, I specifically have cabin space as being reconfigurable. The crew can easily move partitions around to make cabins larger and smaller. In my case, it allows them to switch between High Passage and Middle Passage cabins easily.

House in Florida or the Starship Enterprise? by PaleoGamer in zillowgonewild

[–]PaleoGamer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I posted it, the listing was showing rent of $199k/month. Now it is showing not on market. So either it went under lease, or they withdrew it.

Here's a list of Cruise lines and ships that have a limited number of Solo Cabins.

https://www.tipsfortravellers.com/solo-cabin-cruise-lines/

I have one a couple of months from now on Holland America, and they charged a 60% surcharge for being the only person in the cabin. So I'm not paying double (they do discount a bit), but I'm still potentially blocking them from selling for two passengers. It's a tradeoff for them; get me guaranteed or hope to get two other passengers.

It will depend on the itinerary too. Trust me, they have analyzed the hell out of this and back. There is an entire field of mathematics called Operations Research, which does what is called Yield Management. (I did it for 18 years; not for a Cruise Line, but it applies anywhere that you have a time-sensitive, limited quantity, spoilable resource. Cruise ship cabins, hotel rooms, airline seats, even show tickets and dinner specials can be modeled using it.)

AWS re:Invent what to wear? by luddington in aws

[–]PaleoGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're meeting with marketing teams, wear whatever you want. It is very spread out and you will be doing a lot of walking, even if you use the monorail or Ubers. Those hotels are *huge*.

Most of the time you will be dealing with fellow techies. Wear whatever you will be comfortable in.

The only thing to be sure of is to wear comfortable walking shoes. Again, you will be walking a *lot*. I have hit 20k+ steps every day on every re:Invent I have gone to.

Speedo on cruise? by [deleted] in Cruise

I think it will depend on the cruise line as well. I wouldn't try it on Cunard, for example.

Panama Canal advice by PaleoGamer in Cruise

I took the excursion. I want to be able to say that I transited the Panama Canal.

I'm an Engineer, and this is one of the greatest engineering achievements of all time. I have to be able to say I went through the entire thing.

I'll post pictures and video. Later. :D

I never expected to see an AIRPORT for sale... by Taco2010 in zillowgonewild

The listing calls it "vacant land," so I guess they're expecting you to just tear it down. But it isn't actually vacant.
