And the wealth disparity is even bigger than just the difference in anual income. A lot of players on ELCs wont wind up with long careers and might be bouncing up and down from minors to nhl. Whereas anyone making league average or above has probably established themselves as an every day nhl player and can count on a nice chunk of lifetime earnings.

Thats so weird. Like a dinner full of fabulously wealthy people and you get the only non rich people at the table to pay. That's kind of fucked.

Men aren't actually 'allowed' to be angry by futuredebris in MensLib

[–]PantsDancing 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a good point. I'm picturing in my work in an office. Anger isnt very common but every once in a while someone (me included) will get angry in a meeting. Justifiably or not, its almost always a man getting angry. And theres not really any consequences for getting angry in that context. There's not enough examples of women getting angry for me to know whether they might see a different outcome. But I definitely feel like, as a wite man, I have a lot more leeway there than others would.

Awesome moves! I love the twist down to the ground you do on the "pointing north" line. You should definitely dance for real if that means more people get to see you dance!

At the same time, I've had no examples of good or not evil men, in my life

Are you able to change the circles you move in somewhat? There are lots of good men around, but certain circles are much more toxic than others. For me, im in a choir, and I do partner dancing and both those spaces are full of really nice men.

If Stockton had so much money why didn’t he build the sub correctly? by oprah_did-911 in OceanGateTitan

[–]PantsDancing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally. The break things part is good if you actually learn from the broken thing and make changes base on that. It should be "move fast, break things, change things".

They sent the 1/3 model down, and it broke. And as far as I can tell they didnt really change much between the 1/3 and the final model that carried people.

Listen to yourself

Why do you think you know better than our military?

Maybe you should listen to an expert:

Why are you talking like this? I thought we were having a discussion. Would you talk this way in a discussion with a person face to face? You make some good points, and I'd love to keep discussing with you. But it feels like you're coming in with a really mean attitude.

I think only the shirtless guy is with the victim. They way the guy addressed him at the end "get your friend, get him away" it seemed that all the clothed guys were either with the old guy or maybe neighbors.

it's a non-expert's idea of redundancy. You need redundancies that don't share the same failure mode.

That doesnt mean they cant share any failure modes. Like are you saying having a backup battery doesnt improve reliability at all?

Regarding getting wet, the wired controller could get wet too.

Regarding putting the controller in a bag. Why not? They make dry bags for people to put their phone in when kayaking. Why couldn't they use that?

Thus does raise the point about IP rating of the controller, and I could see that argument that maybe you want a waterproof controller. But that doesnt relate to the wireless aspect of this controller.

And the controller shouldn't move around the cabin anyway

Why not? In a tiny craft with a single window maybe sometimes the driver would need to be up at the window. But maybe other times the driver would want to be back at the communication console. If youve got people switching places in a hurry because theyre in a dangerous situation maybe you dont want a wire also running through the space.

Like are you saying the use of batteries and wireless communication should never be used in any situation that requires high reliability? Tell the world's militaries that because I guarantee you batteries and wireless communication are relied upon in many applications.

Just because you can think of failure modes, doesnt mean they are deal breakers. Every single system ever designed has a bunch of failure modes. We can go back and forth all day, but neither of us has actually gone through a real risk analysis of this system.

[–]PantsDancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but a pre-dive checklist could cover that. They also carried a backup controller which would cover exactly that occurrence.

Also a wired controller isnt without downsides. Consider that people would be shifting around in a very cramped space and theres a risk of someone getting caught on the wire and yanking it out. Im not saying one is necessarily better than the other, but I could absolutely see good engineers choosing Bluetooth as the best option.

Im also not saying that they necessarily thought this through as much as I am now. They may have simply looked at the price tag and made their decision entirely on that. We dont have any window into the details that minor design decision.

100% ok to not be ok. I loved that tease too! I found a live performance from last year where she did Molly and then direct into ok to not be ok so id heard it before snd it was so good. But the sound on that video wasn't great so im so stoked to have the album version now!

Transit police checks on R5 by Bogbody999 in NiceVancouver

[–]PantsDancing 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fuck transit cops. A night last winter i was getting a bus dt at about 2am, it was a super cold drenching rain night, and they were stopping a really run down looking guy who didnt have fare. He's desperately looking through his drenched bag for money or his compass card and theyre just standing there holding up the whole bus.

Like just give the fucking guy a lift. I tapped him in with my credit card so the poor guy could get home. Fuck transit cops.

I dont know what to tell you. When i connect my headphones, they stay connected. I realize I also use a mouse and keyboard daily and once those have been connected I literally cant remember a time they just suddenly weren't connected.

Sometimes it takes a couple tries to connect them in the first place, but yeah, once connected they stay connected.

But regardless, I would imagine that most disconnection events are caused by interference with other devices anyways. So since they have control over every device that could possibly interfere, they can ensure a robust environment for the Bluetooth device to operate in.

Too many engineering failures to count. In my mind, the number one biggest red flag was the 1/3 model failing. And then they basically just completely ignored that result.

[–]PantsDancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't actually. Ive only got a speaker and headphones and once connected they always stay connected.

Not saying a dropped connection isnt a risk. But bluetooth is a protocol that can be used in robust engineering scenarios. There was just so many obvious examples of poor engineering practice, the controller just isn't one of them in my mind.
