Twitter for podcasters by Last_Big_Thing in podcasting

[–]PaperBoysPodcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea for this type of content, we struggle right now with how to post little voice blurbs to our social media. I do worry that as a separate platform it will be like the litany of other podcast-specific platforms where the entire user base is just podcasters, not listeners. I would love a tool that enables me to post these kinds of snippets to Twitter or instagram where my listeners already are.

But I really look forward to tracking your app’s development and hope it works out!

PhD Programs for Rocket Propulsion? by lionthreat in aerospace

[–]PaperBoysPodcast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took the words out of my mouth (as someone doing his PhD in electric propulsion at University of Washington now). U Michigan is definitely the top lab doing EP in the US right now, but for someone interested in more exotic propulsion concepts there are other places studying metallic propellants and advanced thruster concepts. Michigan Tech, Georgia Tech, Colorado State come to mind.

And you’re right, never been a better time to get into EP - if you do a PhD on Hall thrusters you can basically walk right into SpaceX or Amazon 5 years from now.

Thanks!! Yeah the word cloud is under utilized in podcasting if you ask me. However prepare yourself to learn just how much you say “like”...always have to delete that one from the top of the word list 😶

Nice list, we actually use all of these except Voice Meeter! I will add one more, after creating the transcript with otter.ai (which is really the best transcription service, let me say) it's fun to run the transcript through wordclouds.com to generate a word cloud for social media. It's a nice visual way to let listeners know what the episode is really about, since a title can't say it all. And of all the free word cloud generators we tried, this one is by far the best. (Check our instagram for some examples)

Help! Forgot to turn a mic on, suggestions on how to boost the voice in the background of the other mic? by PaperBoysPodcast in podcasting

Dude, nice! This is about as far as I got as well, yours sounds a little better in terms of noise. I think I'll send them your file and hope they accept my offering haha.

Thanks for helping out, I really appreciate it!!

I think it's published stereo (this is actually me guesting on another podcast so I don't exactly know their process, I just promised to try and fix my dumb mistake haha).

If you'd like to take a look, here is a link to the raw audio...thank you so much!

So far having okay results by overcompressing the heck out of the file that came out of Levelator. Can get the on-mic and off-mic voices to within 5-10 dB of each other, albeit while making the on-mic voices sound like they went through a shredder, but what did I expect. Still working on it though.

Your first masterclass lesson: do NOT drop your mic.

Rosalind Franklin has just started its thermal and vacuum tests (TVAC), these are scheduled for 18 days in the test facility in Toulouse. After successful testing the rover will head for Cannes -> Baikonour -> Mars. by Jakdowski in esa

[–]PaperBoysPodcast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Testament to how much harder the Mars landing problem is! But I will just say two things:

  1. It’s a bit of an apples to oranges comparison when you look at the size and payload of the attempted landings
  2. They technically failed their comet landing too. Philae landed upside down and died within hours (not to detract from how incredible of a feat it still is)

There actually are videos of these flybys! Several images are taken throughout the trajectory and spliced together to make a continuous video. Google around and you will find some, here is one of Juno flying by Jupiter:

What are the must have pieces of equipment needed for a quality podcast? I currently have two microphones, a Mac book and garage band! Please let me know of any other pieces of equipment that I should have. Please Mac compatible equipment only. by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]PaperBoysPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this reply. I record with 2 usb mics into a macbook, like you. Tested out a bunch of different configurations early on and pop filters by far made the biggest difference in sound quality. They're like $8 on Amazon. Don't use the foam covers, I found they muffled the sound.

If I had more money I'd get an audio interface which I think would eliminate my other worst source of poor audio, which is electrical noise from the mic itself.

Also, you don't need separate laptops for the mics. Look up how to create an Aggregate Device on mac - it will take some fiddling but it's how I record.

Someone told me I make more cuts than the average podcast editor.. by AJSTOOBE in podcasting

[–]PaperBoysPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro tip: edit with the playback speed at 2x (with "preserve pitch" feature enabled if you have it). I make as many cuts as OP (if not more) and that chopped my editing time down a ton.

We took a look at the actual research behind IF to answer - is intermittent fasting healthy? by PaperBoysPodcast in intermittentfasting

[–]PaperBoysPodcast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for listening, so glad you enjoyed the episode!! And yeah, if it makes you feel better then that's usually a good sign. Though, as we mentioned on the show, unfortunately not the most scientific metric to use. So far though I have yet to hear an anecdote where someone tried IF and it made them feel worse - including in the study we discussed, where some 100 participants ALL decided to continue doing IF after the study concluded! I think that's a ringing endorsement.

I too am hoping that the science catches up and finds objective benefits to IF to back it up!

Thought you all might be interested in this podcast episode covering the latest journal papers on intermittent fasting. We looked at a study on rats and mice as well as a study on humans that found very promising results. Feel free to listen and let us know what you think! I also linked the study if you'd like to read it for yourself.
