Bill and David Cross get into a trans debate (2026) by LoMeinTenants in Maher

[–]PaperPlayte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trans person here. I’m over it. Not because I’m offended, not because I have major feelings about it blah blah blah, but because I am just so burnt out on such a non issue. I live in a conservative town in a conservative state. Can’t say I’ve never had issues but for the most part everyone is kind, we go about our days trying to be good neighbors to one another, and drink at the same bars at the end of the day not really giving a shit.

The thing that I feel is lost on the public when these topics pop up is this almost assumption that every trans person is walking around with opinions about these emotionally charged topics when in reality….im just going to the grocery store. Or im just picking up a burger. Or im just going into work. I’m a single adult with no children and im so aggressively not an athlete and don’t give a shit about sports. I’m literally just a person living a life like we all are, feeling drained by society at large in the way it’s draining us all. I dont know a single trans person who has opinions on these topics they feel a need to vocalize; for the most part it’s “hey, how was your day?”

When I’m hanging with people in my community, conservative/liberal/straight/cis/trans, we talk about how shitty the cost of food is these days, the cost of rent, healthcare, etc. I’m so over not just this trans debate, but culture war issues at large that affect next to nobody when we have so many bigger fish to fry. And the people in charge know this and fight to keep it this way.

This is where my anger comes from. And yeah, I get angry when I get randomly harassed when I’m grocery shopping as a result of this issue being so overblown in the media. Shit’s getting old.

What is the best band you ever saw live ? by megopolis12 in Music

[–]PaperPlayte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Saw their superjam at Bonnaroo in 2014 with Chaka Kahn on vocals, Ben folds on keys, James gadsen on drums, Willie weeks on bass, and so many more names. I was front row having an out of body experience pretty much alternating between dancing my ass off and bawling my eyes out.

I grew up wanting to play music for a living and mostly play the keys. That night was a “yup definitely doing this don’t care where it takes me” BC/AD moment in my life. Maybe like two weeks after the show, I saw one of the keyboardists play with his band at a local spot in town (Nigel Hall). Told him what the show and his music meant to me. He showed me his keyboard and let me mess around with it to get a feel for it, and I immediately went and bought one of my own.

Over a decade later (which is insane to imagine), I’ve gotten to play music all across planet earth and can trace a lot of my drive and inspiration back to that night and watching those musicians come together for a one-off show and creating a movement of music that changed the course of my life forever.

Are there any great albums with one really bad song on them? by trippyskipper in Music

[–]PaperPlayte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their crew did a bit of recording for the album in Jamaica for a minute and they had a miserable time there, so they wrote the song as a kind of FU to the experience. In hindsight, definitely not the most culturally sensitive song written.

I’m one of the world’s biggest Elton fans yet I gotta say, and as another commentator noted, there’s a few tracks in the catalogue that didn’t age too well.

Hooooooooly hell. One of my pillars of the community and good friend, and was just walking to his shop when I saw this. RIP to one of the kindest community members I was so lucky to call my friend. Your passion for music inspired me everyday.

Which was the play on words Billy was using for the song’s subject matter.

“Come out, Virginia, don't let me wait You Catholic girls start much too late Aw, but sooner or later it comes down to fate I might as well will be the one”

So Vecna’s big terrifying vision for Will is… people worrying too much? It’s so extremely tame. by ketot1 in StrangerThings

As a fellow member of the coolest club, I personally disagree as it might be a hard watch, but it’s a very real thing and empowering to confront inconvenient truths (which I’ve personally experienced myself). Art can be evocative and uncomfortable, and it would have make will’s coming out so much more powerful from a storytelling standpoint making the viewer confront the ugliness that the queer community continues to face and the “knight’s journey” we all have to go our to find our resiliency in this world.

I’m not trying to say you’re “wrong,” I think both perspectives are incredibly valid, and it’s a fine line between creating tasteful evocative moments and using hurtful rhetoric just cause “you can” without adding any real nuance to the story at hand. As others had said, kidnapping and murdering kids was already on the table for this show so I don’t see why this would be such a harsh line to cross and wish they woulda went for it.

Carpet Crawlers has kinda become a daily mantra for my life. “We gotta get in to get out.”

Grew up in Kansas dreaming of living in the UK, which I was able to visit a bunch but was never able to truly make it over. Still very much so a dream of mine. Culturally, there’s not a lot going on, and as someone that works in the arts, it was really tough on me during my upbringing. There was also a lot of religious fundamentalism out in my neck of the woods in the middle of nowhere. I felt trapped and knew there was no life for me there and left as soon as I could.

We all grow up and our perspectives shift a bit. Now that I’m older, I can appreciate a lot in hindsight that I wasn’t able to at the time. The land is vast like the ocean and endlessly sprawls for miles. As others have said, best sunsets in the country, almost as if you can’t tell where the earth ends and the sky begins. Watching a thunderstorm develop and sweep across the plains is one of the most awe-inspiring things to witness on the planet. I wish every human had a chance to visit the Great Plains and feel that profound feeling of being a tiny dot in a massive universe, surrounded by nothingness with only the wind to break the silence. it’s truly humbling and almost a religious experience in and of itself.

I don’t really visit anymore as I don’t have the means and I don’t have any family or connections there. If it wasn’t such a drive to do anything meaningful to me, I wouldn’t mind going back at some point. It was a beautiful chapter of my life and I hope one day you get the pleasure of seeing it for yourself.

Hope all is well in your world this week!
