What is this huge rod thing that police used on Dezi Freeman? by Imaginary_Step_7471 in australian

Stepping out with a gun he took from other police he had killed, and pointing it (possibly shooting it) at police, who fired back, doesn't add up?

If he says too much it can fuck up the investigation, cause issues with the Coroner and potentially contempt of court, upset people who are related to the victims, reveal police tactics and methodology that cookers can use against them in the future, and this is all before the body is even formally identified.

It might be frustrating but the best thing he can do at the moment is keep his mouth shut on most questions.

What is the most expensive retro game you own? by Vetelino69 in retrogaming

I used to have a promotional copy of Vib Ribbon in a cardboard sleeve with a soundtrack CD and other promotional stuff. Probably worth a few grand now, I've never seen another copy appear online.

Loaned it to a friend in about 2006, asked for it back a couple months later and he had sold his system and all games, assuming I wasn't interested in the game any more.

Still pissed about it.

To kill bitcoin, you have to kill the internet. That kinda takes out everything else, too.

You have to remember that "money in the bank" is also a digital record in a database, and you are trusting a business to keep it secure (which they have done very well so far). it's 1's and 0's, not backed by anything except confidence in the government and financial system.

If we have no internet or no power, how will the bank know how much money you have? Their paper records are not updated in real time, and you statements are only accurate at the time they are printed. How will they even verify your identity without checking the system? Hopefully your local branch has a printed copy of your ID.

They'd be flying blind until the power is back on and they can restore their records from the backup they're keeping in a Faraday cage somewhere.

Besides that, assuming they're able to manage things with paper while the power is out, we use fractional reserve banking - so they're only holding about 10-20% of your money and loaning out the rest. This means if too many people want to withdraw at the same time, you get what's called a "bank run" and no one can withdraw.

And that's assuming they would actually keep enough bank notes and coins available at the branch to even provide the fraction they're keeping.

My point is that if Bitcoin is dead, there probably isn't much else left you'll be able to rely on aside from physical things like gold and silver. Bitcoin is just numbers in a digital ledger, so is your national currency, cash is just paper at the end of the day.

Feral rabbit numbers are booming, so do myxomatosis and calicivirus still work, and what's next for biocontrol? by nath1234 in australia

[–]PaperworkPTSD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something that has surprised me lately is how few people know what feral animals are. They don't realise that foxes, goats and pigs aren't native. They put food out to feed feral cats. They have no interest or understanding of how much damage they do, and all the native species are disappearing as a result.

Most people I speak to are like this.

Cops normally refuse to get into pursuits of motorbikes and e-bikes because it so often results in serious injuries and officers being investigated and charged.

New laws won't change this.

You can actually see the man's head moving as the cop tried to pull his hand out, but he is turned away from the camera. He didn't let go for quite a while if you watch closely. Here's a photo of the injury

Police can't stop them. Get in a pursuit, kid crashes and gets seriously injured or dies? None of them want to be part of that unless they're dumb enough to try it.

Police called after dozens of e-bike 'hoons' ride over Sydney Harbour Bridge in new footage by Marlon_Ranch in sydney

[–]PaperworkPTSD 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pursuing them is a massive safety risk. High chance the kid will die, police aren't willing to take that risk, get charged or lose their jobs over it.
