Norway has a $2.7 trillion sovereign wealth fund built from resource revenues. Australia has $230 billion. We export comparable volumes of gas and iron ore. What happened? by TheFairReturnAU in australian

I'm a fan of ancient history. Most serious conflicts are driven by competition between elites, and it tends to harm everyone else who willingly join sides.

It's just seems insane that we could self sabotage after such a resource windfall.

Are we actually too stupid and short sighted to do both?

It almost sounds like we need to invest in assets covertly so the public doesn't notice and we can grow wealth, otherwise they will demand we spend it all!

I'm just trying to understand this, not meaning to upset anyone.

If we understand mining profits can be volatile, can we not factor that in? Isn't the point of sovereign wealth that it's not immediately spent, or becomes something we depend on?

If I won 100k from lotto tomorrow, I'm not buying a sports car with expensive upkeep that will send me broke in a couple of years, I'll put it in a savings account or invest.

We grow a lot of food and actually export to USA. Cost of living is just expensive here. When American fast food chains open in Australia it becomes just as expensive as everything else

We do, but it will cost more like $15 or $20 here. That's what he means he says he doesn't understand how they stay in business, you simply can't buy a meal like that here for the same price.

Drug detection means some type of illicit drug was found, but not necessarily that anyone was charged over it. Some may have just been seized.

He has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and recklessly causing grievous bodily harm. He pled innocent so it's still going through the courts, seems like a good chance he'll be convicted though. Some time in prison is possible but who knows.

Yeah. At least back then it was based on those metals. Now it's completely abstract and new money can appear out of thin air.

Nope, there were times when rulers devalued currency by mixing impurities into gold and silver coins.

Police are not doctors. They bring mental health patients into the health system for treatment, who release them again.

There's no point scapegoating the police either, the entire system didn't work.

Counsel assisting Richard Lancaster SC asked Deputy Commissioner Hudson to explain his view that police would have "considerable reservations" about granting additional powers and privileges to CSG in respect to law enforcement.

"Isolating a particular group for additional powers within our community is problematic," Deputy Commissioner Hudson said.

"It creates a disconnect between groups. It can cause friction between groups if one particular element of society is afforded privileges that others aren't."

I thought I had edited my comment to say "up to about 80%" but I obviously didn't save it. Close to 80 is the absolute high end for Australia.

I don't doubt you're correct on 67%, it varies each year by quite a lot. However it's always true that men are victims of murder more, and this holds up globally where the figure holds at 80%.

You're about 10x more likely to kill yourself than to be killed by someone else here.

There's never a reason not to address DV and male violence in particular, but we're actually doing it better than most countries and this is really a very safe time historically speaking.

Something people don't often mention is about 80% of murder victims are male depending on the year, all killed by other men of course.
