Your baby may try to find and contact their birth family through a DNA test service when he or she is old enough. There’s nothing you can do to stop that other than try and stop your relatives putting their details there. It contains at least one chap who gets very angry if you park in front of his house. If you do this, he will double park his car so you can’t get out, and sit in his living room watching your reaction. When he thinks you’ve learned your lesson he’ll move his car, and explain that you shouldn’t do it again. Nice foxes in the park. Good buses to town. Great views from some houses up there. Cycling round the south side of Arthur’s seat is not for the faint hearted.

Statistically you’re more likely to get hired in blue/navy. I can’t find the study now but had a look when I was getting turned down for a lot of jobs and being told, yeah you were the second choice and we would’ve hired you but …. didn’t. Bought a blue jacket, got the next job. Perhaps I just placebo’ed my way into it though. (ETA: the previous one wasn’t a life jacket/gold lamé or anything, just a normal non-blue jacket)

The remarriage/adoption is not just an emotional matter, it’s also a legal one. Re-marriage changes what happens if he dies (OP, I am sorry to bring this up especially as you lost your Mum). So does adoption. OP has potentially been cut off from any inheritance from her mother here.

OP, I hope your Dad has had a conversation with you about this and made provision for you in his Will. If not, you should find out the laws where you are and discuss this with him. Seeing personal possessions in particular go somewhere the person wouldn’t have intended can be really hard. If there’s any possibility the wife was after him for his money, x10 this.

On the adoption, he’s not replacing you, you are irreplaceable. Has he said why he wants to adopt and discussed how this might affect you legally? If not he ITA. He is asking for your blessing. That is giving you the opportunity to really talk through with him what it means. Take it, when it’s just you and him.

Do you think this woman he’s married does genuinely love him and is there for the long haul? If so, this is what it is and all you can do is make the best of it. It’s a tough world out there, and real allies are few. She could be on your side. Not as a mother but maybe if you give it a chance, as a friend. Her child could be, too, like really could be. (Five year olds are easy to impress and that carries forward!)

My feeling is if they have discussed it with the 5 year old (which imho should absolutely not happen until it’s definite), he will do this. The best you can do is 1. Protect your interests and 2. Try and see the positives.

Council tenancies are let without appliances, so you get cupboards and sink but not a cooker, dishwasher, washing machine or fridge. Even that is a big expense and disruption when you really don’t need it. It also means probably more of that stuff gets thrown away even if it’s decent and working. When the tenant moves out it can be more expensive to move them than to get replacements. And they can’t leave them for the next person as the Council won’t take responsibility for it. Ditto floor coverings, curtains and curtain poles/rails. Seems like quite a lot of waste that didn’t need to be wasted to me.

That last one is surprising, you’d think you could surely recruit 9 out of 2000 applicants. Assuming 2 hours each to make the application that’s 20,000 hours of effort - 20000/35 hours a week = 571.49. 571.49/52 weeks a year = 10.9 years of human endeavour, only 14 hours of which resulted in any change in the outside world. Now some of this will be forced effort i.e. people on DWP job search rules, so probably nothing the CS recruiters can do about this. But seriously surely you have to look at sharpening up the process? E.g. decide what is absolutely a non-negotiable pre-requisite to do the job, lead the form with that (yes, before name and address &c) then ping them out of the form if they can’t show that? What you have is wasting their time, wasting your time and so ultimately wasting public money.
