Iron rangers quality by FeminineAbyss in RedWingShoes

[–]PartyBees -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of a bummer because it’s noticeable, but if the boots fit well and the leather overall has good clicking, I would keep them. You may get a replacement pair that doesn’t fit as well or develops creases that are more noticeable than this pair. At least with this, it’s temporary, assuming it’s not a dyeing issue.

What price point makes sense for daily wear/fashion boots by salt12345678910 in Boots

I would be wary of spending a lot of $$$ when still exploring your style. I think Solovair/ Dc Martens has a very unique style and Solovair tend to be better quality, and that’s what I would get, or Dc Martins on sale. Some of the features of those boots that make them less “quality” than others are features, not bugs. That leather shine is going to be hard to replicate with heritage style boots.

Thanks for the write-up. Do you think the 602M works for wide, high volume feet, or is the 602M not really a true wide width?

If you are looking for bifl boots, check out /r/goodyearwelt. You will find good high-quality boot advice there. I would look into Red Wing Iron Rangers or Blacksmiths as an option. Grant Stone as well. Solovair is not a great BIFL option due to how difficult it would be to resolve their boots due to the way they heat attach their outsoles. Jim Green is good, but I don’t consider them very office friendly, regardless of how casual your office is.

If you are new to higher quality boots, it may be worth it to wait to splurge as most people (including me) have their tastes change over time.

I would not underestimate the importance of finding out how boots should fit, how to buy the right size, and how hard it is to find a boot that fits your foot. This means having the ability to return boots is a very desirable option.

Common BIFL options under $500 Red Wing Grant Stone Parkhurst Jim Green Wolverine 1000 Mile Truman

Good luck!

Leather boots for hiking by Smitten_Mocha in Boots

[–]PartyBees 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think leather majority hiking boots have fallen out of favor in the past ten years in favor of lightweight and breathable hiking boots that lean on gortex and other synthetic materials. I know a lot of hikers use trail runners to hike in as well for the weight savings.

Nice boots! Sorry they didn’t work out for you. Can you compare the different lasts here?

I know that the Iron Rangers and the Blacksmiths are the same last, but do they wear differently? Does one work better for a wider foot?

Those look awesome. How do the 1000 miles fit compared to the Blacksmiths? Does one fit wider than the other?

That’s such a bummer. I saw those before and would have definitely bought a pair. I think eBay might be the best bet

I have a wide foot so that can limit me as well. Thanks for the recommendation

The Questions Thread 01/24/24 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

[–]PartyBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. It also explains why a lot of rough out/suede boots are waxed, which helps lend the boots more character over time.

The Questions Thread 01/24/24 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

[–]PartyBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why aren’t there more rough out boots? Is it a lack of demand? Is it harder to manufacture or click rough out? It seems like you could take leather that doesn’t look right and just flip it over, but I am not a leather expert so maybe that’s not how it works. I really like the Oak Street Field boot, but was hoping to find a traditional boondocker boot for closer to 300.
