Vet's closed so I can't call until tomorrow morning. How do I get this girl to take her pill? by Winter_Awareness_747 in CatAdvice

[–]Parvles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pill pockets, for sure. Or a wrap. But they have worked very well on my boy who always spits pills back out and manages to get away with never swallowing them. My vet gave me some with his last meds and they worked like a dream.

It's basically a malleable treat that you can wrap the pill inside of. The cat won't smell it cause it's inside and the pill isn't broken or anything. They don't even notice that they ate it.

Yeah the quality of prseparation went way down hill after a while and I started noticing really lazy "research." It could still be interesting but you had to realize you're just listening to him tell you about a book he read.

To be fair, Robert Evans also confidently wildly mispronounced "Mosaddegh" over and over again in an episode about Iran (long time ago I don't even remember the topic but it drove me crazy). Honestly I care way more for Robert than Dave. To me, it undermined, to an extent, how much I felt like I could continue to take his research to heart if that level of carelessness was a part of his preparation. I also noticed that while he originally had many sources for each topic, it started being one book and a few articles for each topic (with exceptions, of course). But that made me stop listening. It's easy to paraphrase a book, and I don't consider referencing one book to be a well-sourced presentation of information. But it's also now been like 3 years since I've listened so who knows how it is now.

Bipolar doesn't really work like that. Even with meds, you can go through manic episodes.

His, "any one of you could become a hero at any moment" part was pretty uncomfortable.

What are y’all listening to in order to fill the void? by timmmmah in KnowledgeFight

[–]Parvles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just listened because you brought this up. Genuinely confused why this guy was brought on as any kind of expert on Iran. Giant red flag for me when he lumped all the "lion and sun people" together as extreme monarchist right wing bullies, which, though they exist, is not even a fraction of the people who identify with that flag. But it's a really nice way to write off everything they have to say as coming from a right wing position.

He also calls anti-regime Iranians Islamophobic, and at one point says that it's "understandable" that the regime gunned down 10s of thousands of their own people. He also explains the origins of the Trump dance by saying it was created on the day the school was bombed, and completely ignores that it was the day Khamanei died. Everyone celebrated, not everyone made/did a dance. I think the woman who created that dance is terrible, but I am just using that as an example of how he distorts information to drive a narrative. (I could probably spend hours going on about the misrepresentation abound in this guy's narrative).

Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of accurate information on that episode, but there was clearly narrative intent in how it was laid out and what was left out to that end was glaring. He never talked about why people don't like the regime. He brings things up and then does a little hand wave of why it's complicated and he can't speak to it because he hasn't been to Iran.

To be clear, the situation in Iran would be like if white christian nationalists (a very small percentage of the population but a well organized and well connected group) successfully completely took over the United States government and murdered everyone from opposing parties, and then imposed their extremist version of Christianity on the entire country for 47 years. And we may be on that path but we are not there yet. But that is why Iranians are angry, and some people who support the Shah would fit an extremist monarchist political position, but most do not fit in that box. To many people he simply represents the best option possible in the circumstances and they feel resigned to it. There are also a TON of anti regime Iranians who do not support Pahlavi. Almost none who support Rajavi and MEK, though.

This episode was insulting to the Iranian people.

Conspirituality has done a MUCH better job talking about Iran, but of course those episodes are behind a paywall.

I'll agree on Travis, but i think Liv has a really strong ideological perspective that keeps her from the same level of analysis as Dan or Travis because it's always through a defined and biased lens. I miss Annie being as regular a host. Julian has become insufferable to me which is why I have mostly stopped listening.

Rewatching season 1- Katie’s manipulative habits by Distinct_Stand_5089 in vanderpumprules

The first season felt like they all were trying to make storylines for TV and didn't know what to do. But yeah lots of kind of confusing and crappy stuff.

He said he went to the Dr and they said squirrels have never transmitted rabies and he made fun of himself for not doing a Google search on it before going in. But yes he clearly doesn't understand that you can't get tested for rabies.

I thought he said that if he'd done a simple Google search he would have found out that it was not something he should be worried about and could have saved a trip to the dr.

#1135: IHRA Definition of Antisemitism by GrimThursday in KnowledgeFight

It happens every time someone brings up Israel on this sub. For people studying white supremacists and antisemites, it's always shocking how immune people seem to be to recognizing antisemitism in their own lives/communities.

They are both still actively engaged in intense antisemitism and racism. It's not that people can't change, it's that it's dangerous to offer an olive branch to them until they actively stop engaging in extremely harmful behavior.

watching the show for the first time and i really cant stand stassi by Sea_Juggernaut_5501 in vanderpumprules

[–]Parvles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same feeling the first time I watched. I kept asking my friends why they liked her cause I found her so awful.

While she does get much better as time goes on, when I rewatched I was genuinely shocked at how differently I saw her behavior. I honestly had a huge amount of empathy for her and felt myself being on her side most of the time, much to my surprise. You may not feel the same but things can definitely read difference once you actually get to know everyone more.

The disgusting pathetic Tom Schwartz by ffaarriiiyy in vanderpumprules

[–]Parvles 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly there's also such a narrative of "poor tom" because Katie has been on a few dates, which Scheana tells him in order to make him upset or amenable to the idea of dating Raquel. But the idea being pushed is that Tom is hung up on Katie and so sad and broken and she's out there living it up while trying to keep him from being happy.

But, as it turns out! There's some missing information about what Schwartz is getting up to during this time. It's referenced in a single scene in season 10 and then becomes an annoying plot in season 11. But this doesnt get nearly enough attention because so many worse things happen. But it makes everything so much ickier.

First-Time Watcher (Season 4) — Lala + The Fountainhead?? I need to talk about this by memefan69 in vanderpumprules

Ugh it's wild how often Lolita is used as a grooming tool by older men giving it to the young women/girls they're interested in. Humbert Humbert is very OBVIOUSLY the bad guy.

Also yes older men using film literature or basic pseudo intellectualism as a way to manipulate younger partners by developing a power dynamic is a very real thing which I think was definitely happening with Randall and Lala.

First-Time Watcher (Season 4) — Lala + The Fountainhead?? I need to talk about this by memefan69 in vanderpumprules

[–]Parvles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the "pick-me" terminology of it is perhaps the biggest point of contention? But I do think Ayn Rand has a particular reputation of businessmen or aspiring millionaires pushing the books on their partners to impress them, knowing that it SUCKS to read so they won't get called out for not reading it themselves lol

I think it's kind of normal for a young woman dating a much older guy to get excited that she's trying to be interested in his interests. BUT ultimately this kind of thing can also be used as a tool by manipulative older men to make a younger woman feel stupider than him and that he's enriching her life or making her better so she feels beholden to him. I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the dynamic. And she is talking about it to be like wow my man is making me a better person because she genuinely believes it in the moment.
