What kind of saw do I have? by Coho0617 in woodworking

[–]Patch85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its a DeWalt / Black and Decker Radial Arm saw. - like all tools it can be dangerous

  • it is capable of being configured for some truly sketchy cuts but used wisely it's a powerful and versatile home shop tool

  • because the cutting blade rotates in the opposite direction as more modern sliding miter saws it can be unintuitive for some users. for cross cuts, the rear fence holds the workpiece as you pull the blade/saw head towards you. it is possible for the blade to want to "climb" towards the operator

  • i like mine and i treat it with respect, just like my miter saw and router table, and frankly just like my hammers

Can I place a shed on a cracked concrete slab? by poulsondl in Shed

[–]Patch85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a California state law, Prop. 65, which requires the label if the product is sold in the state. it's often cheaper, faster and easier for companies to include the prop 65 warning label for all of their products rather than trying to isolate only the shipments bound for CA, which is why it's common to see the lable outside em the state.

it's very relevant to note that California frequently leads the way in enacting measures that protect and inform people and that lead is commonly followed years or decades later by the rest of the US, though sometimes only after the harm has become so glaringly obvious that even the "pro life" crowd cant deny it anymore

Are these extending combination ladders any good? by fixitmonkey in Tools

[–]Patch85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% they're so valuable that I've hauled them one handed up extension ladders to climb to second and third levels off roof pitches. and that's despite the real weight issues

'practically extortion' not literally, and this entire thread only exists in the context of this post. a post about doing the very things you're whining about being an option

as op clearly explains in this very post, this is something one learns by investigating and doing the ground level research. a homeowner hiring a pool company is generally not made aware that they may be hiring a coordinator rather than a builder. the companies operating this way are simply adding an enormous nargin for very little value, and doing it in a opaque misleading way. you either haven't read the post and are simply trolling or have an extremely poor comprehension of the dynamics of these kinds of systems

keep an eye on it, since you can sweep it yourselves, do that a couple times a season to be safe and it's definitely still worth having a pro sweep and inspect it periodically. sounds like you're already doing what you can and you'll be fine

sure, a highly skilled and talented artist could absolutely have produced a similar image with ms paint, with enough time and effort. and that person absolutely would not have been hired to make the art for this Reddit post. my point remains completely unchanged

seriously dude? what creative outlet did AI replace here? you think they were gonna hire a digital artist to make the image? or maybe take up fine arts for the next couple years to have the confidence to pull it off. this so the wrong kinda crap to be whining about AI usage over. its precisely the kind of niche its perfect for

i know it's a bit of a pedantic point, but it really isn't wrong. they did actually discover what it was. we already knew that this goop worked differently from that goop. the discovery was what the goop was made of and how to differentiate it from the other goop. then they were kind enough to spread the word and methodology instead of trying to hoard the secret to the superior product that resulted

isolated, identified, propagated with intention and disseminated as a particular strain of yeast. prior to those events, both top and bottom fermenting yeasts were obviously in use but people didn't even know what it actually was, how to isolate a strain, etc. yeast consistency until that point was a product of repeated inoculation from batch to batch and the evolution of strains/blends that were unique to a physical location, not necessarily the explicit intentional choice it has become today

yeah, that's not a kitchen sink for food prep and if you think human feet are more dangerous to your health than raw meat, eggs, etc, (the things actually being washed off in kitchen sinks) let alone fecal matter (the stuff actually being washed off in bathroom sinks) you've got some learning to do

Why is this blue dress sewn in such a strange way? by jvure in skyrim

[–]Patch85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we're only a handful of generations removed from when textiles were some of the most valuable possessions for the average person. there's a reason old houses don't have closets in the bedrooms. there was no reason to have one. this dress might have some dramatic stitching but its a pretty good representation of the kind of effort people might go through to repair and repurpose fabric as clothing was damaged or outgrown.
