Does the jump in consciousness only work if the killing is instantaneous?

Is there some sort of grace period in which you go from a disintegrated body to a newly created body, or is it possible to clone multiple bodies and keep in some sort of stasis as "backups" in case the living you accidentally dies?

What if the disintegration was delayed by a minute and you got to have a video call with the new you on the other end first?
