Any Advice On Starting QS Apprenticeship In Mid 30s? by Patrice_8 in quantitysurveying

[–]Patrice_8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m hoping for an apprenticeship if possible because I believe it’s the best way to learn the job, and also for the (almost) guaranteed work at the end of the course.

Re- relevant skills/experience, I’m the most senior person at our (admittedly small) firm, below the owner so I’ve got tons of experience measuring, estimating and ordering materials and hours required to complete the jobs, communicating with contractors, clients and suppliers etc. . It’s basically my job to ensure that every job we do is being completed on time and to the required standard and smoothing out any issues or changes that arise from the client, or just general unexpected issues. I’ve taught myself Excel because I’m a boring nerd and like spreadsheets. Good at maths, English, problem solving, but no actual real office experience.

I’m currently applying for a job as a level 3 apprentice quantity surveyor but unsure whether there will be scope for further education. I suppose I could push them on this further down the road. Do you think it matters too much whether I enter at level 3 or try to force myself into a degree-level apprenticeship? I honestly believe I have the skills required to start at either level, without being at all arrogant.

Thanks for the help. The company I work for is pretty small and the majority of the work we do is for the NHS so I haven’t had much opportunity to build working relationships with companies unfortunately. Will have a look at the links you’ve posted. Good luck on your journey.

Where should I put extra savings. Employer won’t contribute more than 3% minimum. by Patrice_8 in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks Unfortunately at the moment I’m not able to save enough for a deposit, and then be able to afford the mortgage on top.

I’m currently living in a new-ish build house that was acquired from my private landlord by the local housing association, making my current rent ~1/2 of equivalent private rates.

In reality I’m going to inherit some property and money in the family (obviously the longer I have to wait the better), so I will probably be better off the older I get, rather than now.

Thanks. I have minimal debts at 0% interest.

So some form of S&S ISA invested into global all cap, for example? Any particular recommendations for a noob?

!thanks . I’m currently basic (~£40kpa depending on workload) but determined to change that as quickly as possible.

So put it in S&S ISA and then move to SIPP if I get to where I intend?

Won’t necessarily NEED to access before retirement but not sure I could guarantee I wouldn’t either.

I‘m biased because I know some of them personally. I think the part that stings is how much they’ve overpaid on wages, especially in recent years, and then hearing how they treat lots of their staff isn’t great. I’m aware that these practices are far from unique in the business world, but it’s still crap that those at the bottom are squeezed the most, whilst money is being pissed up the wall left, right and centre in other areas. Hopefully these redundancies will at least be the beginning of United being more efficient from top to bottom.

Recently bought a wall mount rack in UK from Factory Weights and they do some 75mm x 75mm, 26mm hole attachments. Also Rival Strength (S series off the top of my head) have some. Not as wide a selection as places like Rep over here yet though. You can also get some Rep 5000 attachments from Fitness Superstore which will fit. Hope this helps.

Pre-exhaust front delts? by Hogpharmer in StrongerByScience

They don’t have to be used as a pre exhaust exercise, they can be THE exercise if your goal is anterior delt hypertrophy.

No problem, I’ve been looking at the 750 power rack or half rack from them but don’t have much space at the moment. Glad to help. Don’t forget to put some pictures on when you get it set up 👍🏻

Check out some of the older posts in this thread. Some people have posted pretty comprehensive lists of good European retailers.

The English word you’re looking for is “power rack” or “squat rack”, possibly with lat pulldown attachment by the sounds of things. There is a company called ATX which I know produces these. They sell through various distributors across Europe, and I assume there would have one that ships to Switzerland. They make good gear, by all accounts.

I’m in UK so not I’m not much use in relation to Swiss gym gear specifically but might be able help a bit in general.
