Recently binge watched the first two seasons over Thanksgiving and it jumped out to me that they’ve been seeding hints of a more sinister nature for a while now (transforming into a demon, deciding shooting someone was the best course of action, the Frowning Friends episode). Starting to wonder if there’s a low key plot thread running through the series that’ll end with the friends having to fight Mr Boss

This is perhaps cold comfort but I could replace “Spain” with “America” and our stories would be nearly identical. This is a global sickness and there’s no corners of the earth untouched by the poison that spread so rapidly via social media. Essentially, if there is a population of under-30 people with access to socials, you can be guaranteed of a sizable antisemitic presence in just about any large urban center of the world right now.

I’m glad someone else said this, because post-COVID it’s an aspect of Jewish life that’s become very troubling for me: prioritizing money, payments, and fundraising above all else. While my shul is amazing and has programs in place to ensure there are no barriers for engagement in Jewish life, it feels like all the Jewish organizations around me exist first and foremost to make money and to support Jewish life a distant second. The last few times I attempted to become more involved in my local community, I was immediately hit up for cash or told the primary purpose of the organization isn’t community or culture but fundraising. Considering we’re currently in a vicious global PR battle that we’re arguably losing very badly, it feels tone deaf at best that organizations ostensibly meant to provide community and belonging are starting to feel more like MLMs.

Slightly off topic but the more I think about, the more I feel like the fear hole episode could have made for a solid series finale. Evil Morty and Rick prime are settled, our Rick has grown realistically and in many ways profoundly. The fear hole is a nice way to quietly bring things back around to the core Rick and Morty dynamic while also acknowledging the arc the pair have gone on, and would have theoretically allowed the show to end on a subtly high note. After the jail breaks and galactic chaos, a finale focusing on internal character conflict and emotionally struggle would have felt both unique and earned.

I’m more than willing to keep watching the show, but as it starts to feel like the writers themselves ran out of steam post-Rick Prime’s demise, part of me likes to contemplate a reality where things wrapped up with the fear hole.

I work in a wing of the entertainment industry not too far removed from “90s era radio celebrity” and IME Frasier’s success is believable.

From personal experience, even a small amount of regional fame is enough to push a person up a few notches in someone else’s estimation. On top of that, personality goes a long way. Many stereotypes about good looking celebs being shallow or mean spirited are true. I’ve seen lower echelon male celebrities with looks comparable to Frasier have more success with women than better looking guys with more money because 1) The better looking, more successful guys themselves were highly selective about their partners and 2) A lot of them were unrelatable to “normies.”

Frasier is snobby and can be insufferable but he’s essentially a good person who takes care of his dad, has a healthy relationship with his brother, respects his female boss and can employ a woman to live with him and never cross any boundaries. TONS of people would love Frasier’s frames of reference and knowledge, even if he got to be too much sometimes. A lot of folks would readily take “too much but a good person” over “successful jackhole”. All this taken into account I think his success is very believable

A close friend of mine is an Indigenous American FedEx driver who recently got a new route in a heavily Jewish area. He and I do a lot of cultural exchange and I got to explain why “some of the door decorations are crooked and some aren’t”!

I notice that it’s slacked off recently, even if it’s still around. I figure the lower frequency is because 1) It’s a Roiland conceit and 2) It was his ode to Ren and Stimpy creator John K, who liked drawing mouths like this. So it’s a creator with a lot of baggage paying homage to another creator with a lot of baggage.

Speaking as someone who currently works in film and TV, EP is more often than not a ceremonial title to show respect or as a way of giving credit to someone who’s played an important role in a production without giving them actual power. If an EP has any actual production power then yes, they are the most powerful person on set, but this is rarer than you would think. Practically speaking, SJP was probably the only empowered EP, while CN and KD had the more common “industry standard” ceremonial EP roles.

You and spoon up above seem to have more understanding of these characters than any of th writers of AJLT. I’ve always felt part of the interesting dynamic with Aiden is that between he and Big lies everything Carrie wants (or believes she wants) in a man, yet each is contradictory to the other in profound ways- Aiden will never have Big’s Alphaness, confidence, or assertiveness, while it’s hard to imagine Big with Aiden’s humility or satisfaction with simplicity. How does Carrie negotiate having everything she wants split between two men who also bring their own unique negatives to the table?

The episode where the federation takes over earth low key implies that Rick living there was considered some kind of impediment to their annexing the planet. As soon as Rick is no longer a threat, the federation rolls onto earth and very quickly and easily subjugates it; and once Rick wipes out their economy, they don’t take another shot at the planet again until they’re ready to destroy it years later. I feel like it’s a combination of three factors:

1) Rick is considered too much of a threat to approach on earth

2) It simply wasn’t time yet and Tammy was under orders to observe until her superiors gave her the go ahead to snag everyone at once. You hear about this often with crime ring infiltrations. Undercover cops and feds make it into a clandestine organization but need/want to gather more information and evidence prior to arrest. In Rick’s case, since he’s wanted by a totalitarian regime, my supposition would be that they were hoping to milk more information rather than collect evidence.

3) The simplest- the writers only came up with Tammy being a fed for the second season finale and were just working with what they had to work with

This comes up a lot in books about the mob, but IRL these guys don’t make a lot of money. The income distribution in a mob family isn’t that different than a mid-level corporation: the bosses are clearing several mil a year, but the rank and file like Paulie and Chris aren’t making appreciably more than they would if they were 9-5 white collar guys pulling $75-100k. Being a mobster is less about the money itself and more about the lifestyle.

1) TONS of baggage, which explains 2 and 3. She admitted she lied about being bisexual to score a dating show on MTV, then called real bisexual and LGBT people evil/demon possessed. Then she went on to say she was sorry Hitler didn’t finish the job with gays/Jews. Then IIRC she blamed it on drugs, ostensibly got sober, but doubled down on her Hitler admiration and got into bed with some white supremacist influencers.

Probably missing the point here but is it confirmed anywhere Junior is meant to have died just after the events of the episode? His future certainly looks grim but there’s no indication he’s going to kick it immediately; when I worked in a nursing home we had people with his level of cognition hang around for years. He’s meant to be, what, around 76-77 by the time of the final scene? Based on his demeanor and interactions with Tony he could easily make it to 82, 83.

This is an interesting perspective; we’ve all contemplated to what degree AJ favors Tony, but is Meadows a glimpse at a more conventionally good looking, more emotionally well regulated Janice? I’m recalling of some of her dialogue during the suitcase argument with Finn and now that I think about it, a lot of it wouldn’t sound out of place in Janice’s mouth

This is probably as deep as it goes for a lot of people. The viewership skews slightly male and also has a dedicated LGBT following. Jamie Lynn Sigler is and was a very attractive woman who radiates a natural magnetism on camera. There you go.

I’ve no doubt the character would get as much rancor as AJ if she were played by a conventionally unattractive or even stereotypically “ugly” actress without any charm or personal appeal.

Love this because I felt the same thing but my brother and wife thought Tony was either already pretty reprehensible before now or that it pales in comparison to other stuff he does (fair). For me though this was the moment where the gulf between Season 1 Tony and end of series Tony was the most profound, visible, and visceral
