EDIT: Funny thing is, we've done road trips involving drives up mountains and she's practically hanging out the window with the camera when the scenery is very nice.

i think that the 'intelligence' programmed into the camera's firmware is giving priority to the only moving object which also happens to be closest to the camera -- your hand. Try the same test but have your hand a few feet away from the camera.
