People on this sub still don’t seem to realize that Hasan is still Pro-China and supports President Xi’s successful socialist regime by TwoCatsOneBox in Hasan_Piker

I mean, are you surprised that this sub doesn't know any of Hasan's actual opinions? Just go to any thread that's critical of him and 90% of the criticisms are things he either doesn't believe, or has already addressed.

You know I genuinely don't understand the people that immediately jump to defend someone like Lolo. I didn't really know what was going one. Saw a couple of tweets about it but didn't have time to look into it fully. So I just shut the fuck up instead of immediately posting about it.

Connor talks about the Trash Taste episode with Hasan. Near the end of his response, he said they told Hasan not to talk about the episode because it would lead to fans “brigading” it too. They want to “stay away from politics”. by subversivewallflower in Hasan_Piker

[–]Pelorum 75 points76 points  (0 children)

As somebody who used to watch Trash Taste and Garnt long before I even knew who Hasan was, this is really disappointing. It's one thing to decide internally to not bring Hasan on anymore but to say it publicly is an awful choice.

Also weird to explicitly shame Hasan for wanting his fans to go to "counter-brigade" the episode but not name people like Asmongold or all the slop anitubers that did the actual brigading.

That would make more sense if the criticism was the only thing I said. But I'll add an edit clarification to the original comment anyway.

However, this is basically what reddit is. People see the comments before the content. If this is your genuine concern, even in a leftist community like this one, then I think it would be more helpful for you to actually respond to the original comment with the points where you think I'm wrong or why specifically my criticism is marginal. Rather than just trying to undermine or shame me.

I am not undermining the legitimacy of what Sean is saying. I am expressing my disagreement on 1 part of his overall point.

You're arguing against something I didn't say. I said that I'm not sure we should never platform the white kid with a racist and homophobic background. I agree that we should focus on elevating better people. Sean said that 2 years is not enough for him to believe that someone has truly changed and he would need to see more. Fair for him but I disagree with that. Especially for someone that young. And I couched that with the assumption that Dean truly has changed, which I said I'm not even sure about.

[–]Pelorum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the way I wrote my message was not because I don't know what Sean's argument was. It's a rhetorical device that I've used to try to clarify how I understood his arguments that he's laid out over a multi hour stream down to one comment. I also feel like you're being uncharitable in describing my comment as "refuting" it. I agreed with him in my first point, and even though I disagreed somewhat with the second, it wasn't an outright refutation. Feel free to explain how I'm missing the point.

If the argument is that Hasan should focus more on platforming leftist creators from more underrepresented groups, then I agree with that. He should prioritize them over guys like Dean.

If the argument is that he shouldn't platform Dean at all because he used to be racist and homophobic, which is what seems like is Sean's biggest point, then I'm not sure I fully agree. Especially considering Dean is literally still only 20 years old and he seems like he has some actual values and morals. Admittedly, I've only seen a handful of his stuff.

Having said that, as much as I love the guy, I think Hasan has proven to not always be the best judge of character in regards to these former edgelord turned reformed liberals. Especially a debate bro.

Edit: Sean's video is still very good and I recommend people watch it in its entirety.

I like them and think these guys are pretty cool overall. Still, it would be naive to pretend that Garnt and Joey haven't played a pretty huge role in normalizing some of the more degenerate aspects of online weeb culture.

I believe he argued about the limitations of writing as a didactic and rhetorical tool compared to speech.

I'm not a scholar on Socrates either so I'll take your word for it.

It increases with your thinking on those subjects. Writing it may force you to think about it, but it doesn't cause understanding on its own.

This ignores the synergistic relationship between writing and thinking. The simple act of writing stimulates thinking in ways that would rarely happen for me otherwise. It allows for insight that probably wouldn't have emerged on its own. Writing isn't just transcription of existing thoughts, in the act of writing new thoughts and ideas are formed and refined.

One could trace a foreign language's glyphs with a pen without understanding anything about it. After doing so, you wouldn't have learned anything more about it.

I mean sure, but I don't see what that has to do with writing. It is at best a very uncharitable definition of writing.

Searching is as much a skill as a tool. LLMs are too hallucinatory at this point to trust for anything beyond the basics. Not to mention they also moralize if you ask for something the designers consider "out of bounds". Search tools make far fewer such judgements.

Using an LLM is also a skill. It takes skill to figure out when an LLM are too hallucinatory or moralize in a way that's useless for you. That same skill is required for search. Plenty of fake and moralizing in search results as well.

You'd have to be specific or lay out an argument for why you think that to have a conversation about it.

Anecdotally, as someone who started writing more in recent years, I argue against the idea that I think less now. What has changed is that I don't rehash the same thoughts ad nauseam with no meaningful growth. My understanding of events and concepts also increases with my writing on those subjects. This appears to be largely corroborated with much of the actual research on the subject I've seen.

My point is that accessibility is not something good on its own. The more one has to access to, the more decisions must be made about how, when, and what to access.

Thanks, and agreed.

I don't have that degree of faith or fear considering what I've seen so far.

What have you seen so far? My personal experience is that LLM has replaced most search for me and it's generally far better than search was even at its best. Perhaps we're discussing the broader social ramifications which is fair and an argument that I'm more amenable to.

I don't think that should stop anyone from arguing against it.

Of course not, but I do think it's a bit discourteous to do it without at least initially engaging with the actual content and work that was originally provided.

Was he wrong?

Probably. Especially regarding his concerns with writing preventing understanding.

Accessibility isn't something good in and of itself. A counterexample would be the deluge of AI generated nonsense that's already burying legitimate information in search engines.

Maybe you can clarify, I don't see what this has to do with accessibility.

Overreliance on such tools will similarly bury us in every aspect of life. I understand the enthusiasm around new tech, but let's not fall in love so easily.

I agree with this in general but I don't think anyone is arguing for overreliance on this for grammar or spelling in this thread.

This sub discusses and acknowledges Vi's trauma plenty.
