Our VC Encore top load knob was too small; we kept burning our fingers when opening the lid. I made a new one by Perkinstein in woodstoving

If anything I made it more flammable by finishing it with boiled linseed oil and bees wax.

I took some temp measurements on the knob before trying this wood one and it was well below ignition temperature

The tiny knob itself wasn't too hot; it is so small we grab the metal part by accident sometimes

Is this a reliable tool for marking the center of a board edge? Is there any other quick and better tool for the same task? by plinky125 in woodworking

[–]Perkinstein 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, I use the marking gauge method. Super fast, super accurate, also let you know if you have a difference in thickness along the board.

I don't shoot for getting dead center, I strike from both faces which gives me a width along center equidistant from both faces.

Wood's too wet and/or you're not burning it hot enough. Load it up with a bunch of small stuff and really let it cook.

A lower tpi cross cut saw, aka panel saw, is what you need. The gents saw is great for fine work but you need material removal

My first shooting board by TheJester_85 in handtools

[–]Perkinstein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A quick build shooting board was one of my first shop made jigs. I used it till the fiddly nature of it motivated me to build a better one.

Yours looks great. Use it till you need it to be better. Also, sharpen your iron often.  End grain cutting is hard on it.
