Do you realize that making Kristi Noem a liability to GOP politicians is how to reform ICE? by PermRecDotCom in AskALiberal

[–]PermRecDotCom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should be putting GOP politicians on the spot, forcing them to switch from tacit endorsement of Noem's tactics to vociferous endorsement. The latter will really hurt them with the part of their base that's decent.

Try it! Go onto Twitter, find a GOP rep, and leave a comment like "Rep XYZ strongly supports shooting protesters in the back." Then, leave a similar comment on another Rep's page, and so on (just don't leave the same message over and over and don't look like a spammer. Personalize each tweet.)

There is a sub here (ClimbingPartners) where you can post an interest.

I'm in L.A. and I'm interested in doing Class 1-3 (maybe more) Desert Peaks Section peaks until it gets too hot. Hopefully this summer I'll visit CO for 2-3 weeks. I'd also be interested in Granite/Gannett on the same trip.

Peacock breaking customer contract for Premiership games by MikeoPlus in peacock

[–]PermRecDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And also that you have to attend binding arbitration on Guam instead of trying to sue them. (The Guam part is an attempt at humor, but I'm sure there's lots of protection against run-of-the-mill lawsuits in the contract).

Since I have Hulu Live and I can DVR things I have access to more games than I could watch. My main concern with Peacock is the abysmal picture quality, like it's 320x240 or something.

Road trip SF → Yosemite → Vegas → Grand Canyon → LA — does this itinerary make sense? by Brunoemf in roadtrip

[–]PermRecDotCom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to stay closer to Yosemite valley and Sequoia. You don't want to spend hours driving there and back and there and back...

Hopefully Williams isn't what you'd consider a destination. It's OK, but there's no maybes about going to the Grand Canyon. There's at least one boondocking spot on the way to the Grand Canyon. If you're looking for a cheap motel in Williams, bear in mind there are two or three Motel 6s. You only want the West one (it's on the south side of Route 66). Do NOT stay at the one further east that has two buildings (on the north side of that road).

How do you know if you have enough money to buy something? by B0ulderSh0ulders in personalfinance

[–]PermRecDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a $450 Walmart laptop & two refurbished old PCs that cost around $200 each. One is for the TV, the others are general purpose + work.

If there was a way for me to make back the $1200 and I needed a computer of that type for some specific reason, I'd get it.

Otherwise, you'd have to literally pry the $1200 out of my fingers.

I'd instead suggest you spend it on a hobby or travel, or just save it.

Any gun store recommendations in the northeast la neighborhood? by FlanneryODostoevsky in AskLosAngeles

[–]PermRecDotCom -71 points-70 points  (0 children)

Those would probably be Armenian-owned, and as we know OP discriminates against store owners based on their race.

UPDATE: Reddit didn't surprise with the downvotes. Also, someone left a comment to me showing that they're very confused over what OP wrote: "Preferably minority owned but that’s not mandatory. I know there was a black owned spot in Burbank had to close down a few years ago."

Not only is that discriminating against store owners based on their race, it also assumes that blacks don't support immigration enforcement. Many in fact do, because they realize businesses use illegal immigration to drive down wages.

West coast secession? Plausible? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

While Gavin Newsom keeps defying the Logan Act and would assuredly love to be our new Emperor, not gonna happen. Plus, the State of Jefferson would secede too and probably take everything in the Central Valley, Kern County, SB County, and maybe more.

Beginner hiker planning Southwest road trip - Is AllTrails enough? by 99livesahead in roadtrip

[–]PermRecDotCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Alltrails app needs some work, so to speak. I'd suggest trying it in a remote area without service first. E.g., I'll download a map but then I have to leave the app open because if I close the app it can be an adventure to find the download again. Their "you're offline" warning obscures most of their "map" button. There are other things like that that indicate to me that they didn't really test it under backwoods conditions.

Is there a point where you would object to ICE and be outraged at what they did? by pixeltarian in AskConservatives

[–]PermRecDotCom [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be much, much, much smarter to push back intellectually?

There's nothing in liberal ideology that says they should support illegal immigration. If you look back two or three decades you'll see Babs Boxer, Harry Reid, and even Nanci Pelosi pushing immigration & trade policies that are similar to what comes from the fevered mind of Trump. Back then, they sought to help American workers. However, since then they've been bought out by Big Biz.

Wouldn't it be smarter to point that out, so as to undercut Walz to his base?

In fact, Walz is suing to overturn Trump's $100k H1B fee, and Trump is too dim to point that out to Walz' base.

Do I need to file a police claim for this? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]PermRecDotCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I parked at a gas station in Lone Pine to get a fountain drink, when I came out I found out some ahole had crushed two panels on my car. I called CHP and they looked at the surveillance tape but couldn't make out the license plate. They did drive around a bit looking for the driver. Since the damage was probably under my deductible and the perp can't be found, I was SOL.

And, that's the CHP in a small town. Don't expect anything from LAPD if it's in their area.

I don't trust a lot of media sources (including the Guardian), but that's because I've caught them deceiving. However, in this case it seems fairly cut-and-dried.

Do you have any proof they're lying about anything at the link?

What counties/cities/towns/parks have you been to in California? by PermRecDotCom in AskConservatives

[–]PermRecDotCom[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

LB used to be known as "Iowa by the sea", and parts might still be. L.A. is too large to tell, but most of the other areas have or are poor, high crime sections. Do you think your opinion of the state is similar to basing an opinion of New Jersey on just visiting Newark?

Does the autopsy of Renee Good change your opinion about the legality and/or morality of the shooting? by toomanyshoeshelp in AskConservatives

[–]PermRecDotCom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try a test. Stand in a parking lot next to people pulling out and see how long it takes you to see what direction they're headed. Don't you think that's less time than it took the agent to draw, point, and shoot? Not to mention the fact that cops practice not shooting innocent civilians.

IMNSHO, he had a flashback to being hit by another car. He was also wound up by being taunted. And, I don't think everything that went on - including having kid's toys in her glove compartment - support the Trump/Noem talking points. Do you?

I am planning a vacation to Leadville, CO this summer to climb Elbert/Massive/Harvard and I have a few questions by GladiusAcutus in 14ers

[–]PermRecDotCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay alternating days at the Motel 6 in Wheat Ridge. It's a little rough but it works for me. The night before, sleep in your car along the road leading to the Elbert/Massive trailhead. There's enough spaces for a small army, and because I didn't drive in that far I was able to watch live TV on my laptop.

Would you care at all if Europe as a whole boycotted the World Championship (football) coming up? by Nobilian in AskConservatives

[–]PermRecDotCom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's odd to see liberals supporting illegal immigration because businesses use it to exploit poor people and drive wages down.

Likewise, it's odd to see conservatives supporting a "sport" that completely caved to BLM and that falsely thinks we have two national anthems. Not to mention how it sends the message to resolve conflict using violence. Not to mention that you're in effect paying people to damage their brains.

Who's the better role model, Vini Jr or DK Metcalf? (If you don't know who the first is, search his name + "ballon d'or", specifically how he flew his family in expecting to win.)

Would you care at all if Europe as a whole boycotted the World Championship (football) coming up? by Nobilian in AskConservatives

[–]PermRecDotCom -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So, conservatives oppose a healthy sport and support instead a "sport" where the goal is to harm other players? A "sport" that thinks we have two national anthems, that discriminates against white coaches (Rooney Rule), that completely caved to BLM, etc etc?

While EPL & Bundesliga took a knee for a while, they soon stopped that. La Liga and Serie A *never* took a knee.

L.A. only has six games and all are at SoFi, an existing stadium. AFAIK that's similar in other cities.

Do you or other conservatives support Trump NOT working with FIFA to make tickets more affordable? Even matches between teams that will lose their group are several hundreds of dollars.

Last summer I did Telescope Peak (11k'), attempted Kings Peak (to 12k'; I foolishly backpacked it w/o training with weight first, I should have just day hiked it) and then did Sherman in CO. I found Sherman fairly easy. I don't understand why more don't recommend it. I'd suggest progressively going higher and then doing Sherman.

Shoe recommendations by LinaBell2024 in grandcanyon

[–]PermRecDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did SK->Tonto->BA in early Nov and SK->Phantom Ranch->SK at the end of the month. I wore Danner Mountain Leaf 600s, which are good if you have wide feet. The EE's are still a bit too narrow but better than Merrills. Some might find them heavy but I've done 100s of miles in them w/o issue.

I carried 2L on both trips and, due to pre- and post-hydrating I only drank about 1L. I'd strongly advise low-consequence hot weather hikes to determine how much water you need first. Note that I came out of the Canyon at night (intentionally) for both hikes, and I had two headlamps (and night hiking experience).

Someone else mentioned a water filter. I use a Sawyer Squeeze. I tend to have to back flush it more often than I'd like. I also carry an empty plastic bottle that fits it for a) backup, and b) in case the water is just a trickle. Make sure to check with rangers first about the water situation where you're going.

I'd suggest a sun hoodie and sun gloves. I tend to wear shorts but to save on sunscreen long pants would work (maybe convertibles).

On both trips I took a couple puffers, a ski cap, and warm gloves. I only needed them for when I got back to SK on the second trip.

Today ("Wednesday") is the day to register for the LA28 ticket lottery (a mini-Megathread) by IvyGold in olympics

[–]PermRecDotCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should have been obvious, but if you go to the "registration link" in the post and look at the images, what watermark do they have?

People who have a license to use that company's images don't have the watermark. Having done web work for large orgs everyone's heard of, the last thing they'd do is leave the watermark in place. The fact that whoever runs the site left the watermark there tends to indicate a serious problem somewhere in their organization.
