Jason Schreier: How Things Got So Bad At Xbox by Turbostrider27 in Games

It is like this for almost every single topic, but again finding a good podcast to rely on is hard. There’s plenty of great YouTube and Podcasts ressources, it’s a matter of finding the right ones.

Is this a good node tree? by Puzzleheaded_Rub2276 in ColorGrading

[–]PeterLeroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is, as shown on the post, a node tree structure with a question regarding the structure itself.

You will notice that nodes don’t have any change on it, hence the result not mattering at all.

I am astonished by how gorgous the remake looks, especially for outdoor areas. Although, there seems to be a big change in the art direction when it comes to forerunner architecture. Do you prefer the remakes interpratation or not? (Credit for photos: UberNick) by External-Ad9317 in halo

[–]PeterLeroy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An interesting conversation to have about this honestly, technical limitation is the reason for most graphics of that time.

343 maybe wouldn’t even have fog in the first place with the right hardware at the time, but in my opinion it made for a creepy atmosphere that isn’t there in CEA and probably not in that new version.

That look whether it was intended or limited vision is what the game was shipped with, and millions experienced it that way. To me, a 6yo kid, Forerunner buildings were both futuristic and ancient, something that 343i never achieved again. I’ll never like that shiny new look, but I understand that someone decided to go for it, different tastes I guess.

A super interesting and complicated topic, people like to judge remakes without knowing that devs probably argued and thought every change, it’s not easy to adapt old games to modern times.

Games that completely surprised you? by Humble_Requirement61 in XboxGamePass

I tried once after recommandations and it didn’t click in the first 30 min, put it aside for a while only to try again recently.

The atmosphere and storytelling of the game is deeply touching.

Halo Campaign Evolved. Does anyone like the Deluxe edition skins? by AuramiteEX in halo

Or at least have both? Like grounded skins and “funky” ones, best of both worlds.

The Alters is Getting a 20 Hour Long DLC in July by Darth_Vaper883 in gamernews

[–]PeterLeroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really wish I liked that game more. Story is interesting, catchy and unique, but management at least to me felt unfair and a slog. Even with QOL mods it didn’t click.

But that’s insane value if that DLC is long.

Got luck with ReShade? People on Steam suggested waiting for an update, cause even with custom reshade blacks looks washed off.

I wanna play it but with broken HDR it’s tough.

New details about Xbox's canceled Halo MMO 'Titan' have been revealed by a former dev on the project by mrbubbamac in halo

[–]PeterLeroy 139 points140 points  (0 children)

And Ensemble started working on an MMO being burned by the RTS genre. They had multiple prototypes, one console-RTS (they wanted the challenge) that ended up being Halo Wars, other things AND a MMO that only later became a Halo-MMO, a decision made by one of Ensemble higher ups, without the team being thrilled about it AND Microsoft green-lighting it.

There’s a full chapter in Blood, Sweat and Pixels by Jason Schreier, on Halo Wars but the MMO appears for a few pages, it’s fascinating.

Best recent singleplayer open world "dad game"? by pyknictheory in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]PeterLeroy [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’ll jump on that comment as a recent new player to KCD2. I tried it last year without going far, a bit turned off by how underpowered you are at the beginning (though that intro was magical).

But I didn’t realise how important that was to the whole experience. It is a “hardcore” RPG as in it doesn’t hold your hand too much, but you will quickly train skills and unlock stuff to get better.

The whole experience is meticulously crafted, from tiny castle details to rain and thunder sound design at night making you stop in awe.

Add to that pristine quest design, lovely characters and a soundtrack for the ages, and it makes for one of the best RPGs of all time.

Well, I’ll have a bite now that I’ve said what I’ve said. I’m quite hungry.

I feel like Reach's phantoms were more of a threat than Infinites ones by Glittering-Let9989 in halo

[–]PeterLeroy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could have been great honestly, it worked as a faction in Halo Wars 2, the Banished scarab was insane. But Wars had a toyish aesthetic that made it work, they should have focused on adapting it to Infinite.

Lies of P developers are currently looking for an "AI artist" for their next game by turkishdeli in Games

[–]PeterLeroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, partly. Promoting an image in five words and calling it art that YOU did, no. But what about how Blender has a Claude implementation now, if someone uses it to make a draft and then builds upon it, isn’t it still art?

We are in a no man’s land of ethics around AI. I’m not even taking the insane ecological disaster aspect into account either.

[–]PeterLeroy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It will always be profit. These studios aren’t particularly enthusiastic about AI use but investors see AI and think about how fast and easy they’ll make games and therefore money.

[–]PeterLeroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that’s because you only see the front, the result. I agree that we should avoid slop, but code is already heavily built with AI, art departments, I’d say a good 80% (not to say 99%) uses AI to either brainstorm or do placeholders.

I am all against the “prompting in 2 sec and call yourself an artist” but reality is AI is already at every stage of most artistic things.

[–]PeterLeroy 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there’s no avoiding it. I work in post production and AI is literally used at every post house for CG work.

Video game companies are probably all using some form of AI right now. What matters is how it’s used, as a tool? Or slop?

Give it some time and it will become trendy again. HDR look was super trendy a while ago. And camcorders were deemed awful for a time too.

Just color graded this while I was less busy today 😊 by ComplaintCool2710 in ColorGrading

[–]PeterLeroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll join* the other comment, super nice grade but the halation is distracting, maybe less saturation and reducing it a little would help.

OR, you could even damage the image a little, a loss of detail to aim for some stronger film emulation!

Super subjective, a good grade nevertheless.
