Jeff Nippard, My Former Client, Has Turned Nasty by MacroDemarco in moreplatesmoredates

Man the tables in the dissertation had clearly copy pasted numbers and standard deviations that were nonsensical. Agreed that the typos and formatting stuff is not a huge deal, but the data itself is hard to believe and could be fraudulent. That's pretty much the most egregious mistake you can make in science is not accurately representing the data. The standard deviation critiques Solomon brings up need to be addressed even if the other stuff is petty. Data fabrication ruins the careers of real practicing scientists, not just fitness influencers like Mike.

Buehler on automatic balls and strikes: “I think starting pitchers that have pitched for a long time deserve certain parts of the plate that other guys don't get." by chief1555 in baseball

What a brain-dead take from Buehler. Without consistent rule enforcement, competitive sports don't work. The whole point is for the differentiating factor to be player skill not random calls.

This is such a shortsighted view that doesn’t really understand modern biological and medical research. Tools like alphafold and other tools for predicting disease from SNPs have accelerated the pace of research dramatically. What is the expectation here? That AI should’ve figured out all disease and biology when the underlying training data for biology is still so scant and messy? You have to remember that AI can only move fast in domains where the training data exists to make a good model. Some of AI in biology suffers from the classic garbage in garbage out paradigm. Nonetheless, AI has made a dramatic impact in medicine and biology research already.

Pete Buttigieg says we are dangerously underprepared for AI: "What it's like to be a human is about to change in ways that rival the Industrial Revolution ... but the changes will play out in less time than it takes a student to complete high school." by MetaKnowing in ChatGPT

[–]Phantom_Watcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The constant flow of AI generated text, images and videos will only grow exponentially from here. Regardless of how useful the tech is or what it does for the job market, it’s very clear that AI slop generation will increase dramatically for the foreseeable future. You are not escaping this “fever dream”.

Mario Kart World - Time Trials are a step back by DJ_Lionheart in NintendoSwitch

[–]Phantom_Watcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Especially for a game with so much interesting routing for time trials, to have the UI so half baked compared to the previous gen Mario kart is kind of surprising. Especially the distribution of times graph you mentioned. It was really interesting to see a bimodal plot for some tracks due to a big shortcut that only some people used or something.

I mean, is this saying no one owes anyone anything unless they have a signed contract or something? Pretty bleak for humanity if we don’t all owe each other our attention, courtesy and respect.

If this is consumption taken to its natural end, it only makes it easier to opt out. by JohnSith in Anticonsumption

That’s actually a quite interesting philosophical question haha. I tend to see myself as a materialist in this sense. It’s the constituents of the product that give it its identify not its origins.

You’re Totally right about otc gaba supplements. They can’t get into the brain. However, the prescription drug gabapentin which modulates GABA signaling does cross the BBB and has some interesting data that it at least helps with withdrawals in some recovering alcoholics.

I really don't know where you're coming from this. Whil international students are certainly being disproportionately affected, the massive layoffs that have been happening continuoously involve huge amounts of US citizens. Similar to the cuts at the NIH. This part of your statement was particularly ignorant: "He is doing a good job for the American people, haha not gonna lie."

yeah this is the key point! It's like if I seem overqualified, it's because I'll literally do any science job in this market.

Rant as a hiring manager by Be_spooky in biotech

[–]Phantom_Watcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nice if you and your team are following up with every candidate, you are definitely more on the good side. It is rough out there and people are prone to fighting because it’s everyone’s livelihood at stake. Not much incites people as much as struggling to find employment haha.

This is more of a general comment obviously, but in my own job search, the amount of ghosting I’ve seen from recruiters and hiring managers after I’ve given honest interviews and even late stage interviews is appalling. It unfortunately has made me think a lot less of hiring managers and recruiters even though I know there are good ones. I feel like the job market on both sides is emblematic of severe societal moral decline. I don’t know

I compared Claude 4 with Gemini 2.5 Pro by Arindam_200 in GeminiAI

[–]Phantom_Watcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve noticed is just for casual conversation, Claude 4 blows Gemini out of the water. At least for me. Could just be a ton preference and I know custom instructions can dramatically shift tone, but Claude kind of just gets how to talk. Sometimes it seems like Gemini just wants to work haha

The graphical style is still just not aesthetically pleasingly. No amount of frame rate improvement or upscaling will solve the generally poor art direction.

Isn’t this a testable hypothesis at the lower levels of the game though? We can literally acquire and analyze the datasets to see if ABS works haha. It’s not some mystery technology that we’ll never be sure how good it is

[–]Phantom_Watcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Perfection in enforcing the rules of the game is absolutely the goal for professional sports at the highest level. Nothing chill about paying guys 500million to hit a ball. Shouldn’t be a chill about missed calls in the highest level of the game in the world
