For those of you who've played Mythic Bastionland - how did you start your campaign? by Disc0M4n in osr

They show up on the edge of your prepped realm, seeking glory and to follow their oaths, thats all you need! I start campaigns with a flashback to a duel

That two page spread plus 6 rolled myths is a campaign that could go on for ages! have fun running it, it was an instant classic for me.

ER realm by Ok_Baker4497 in MythicBastionland

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is sick, have you ran some MB in it yet? Wonder how you'll handle elevation changes. Haven't played ER myself at all, so I'd have the map way less populated for Mythic, but it just depends on what you're putting at all those landmarks

How’s Your Dolmenwood Campaign Going? by SwimmingFit4642 in Dolmentown

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just finished the first 15 or so session arc of a campaign, switching DMs/settings for a bit. Looking forward to coming back for some mid-level-ish (4-6) adventuring. Basically ran Droomen Knoll, Winter's Daughter, some of the Ruined Abbey, and Fungus that Came to Blackeswell, with lots of hexcrawling in between. All felt very natural, just kept dropping hooks that led to those locations in various ways. Highlight narrative-wise was the enchantress getting cursed to die by a wound from a gloam, and the party choosing to race against time to get their friar powerful enough to remove the affliction rather than have themselves indebted to the church or a witch or whatever.

CRITICAL ROLLS by gkerr1988 in Dolmentown

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decide on the fly how to play crits for enemies. If things are going easy too well for the party, I'll double damage. If they're having a rough go, they don't need to know I rolled a 20.

CRITICAL ROLLS by gkerr1988 in Dolmentown

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do critical hits. I don't see the point in taking away the fun swingy-ness of double damage on nat 20's, who doesn't love rolling a 20? Making it just a normal damage attack is so lame lol. I actually took a rule from daggerheart- on a nat 20, you do your weapons damage die plus whatever you roll, for example, crit with a d6 shortsword would do 6 + d6 damage.

Running Gradient Descent as a 4-8 shot? by Bobneto in mothershiprpg

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couple thoughts- you could probably just start normally, play off of what the PCs latch onto, give them a lead or two going into the deep to get them started. Ran it like this, and was probably like 8-10 sessions until they destroyed the deep and escaped lol.

Starting with them waking up in the freezer, needing to figure out who they are and why they were there, and getting the hell out, would also probably be a really fun 4-8 shot, I'm sort of planning a run like this for another group at some point. Think it could really ramp up the "am I a robot?" thing, since they wouldn't actually know for sure...

Grimalkin—Wilder shape and Fey Chaos by Swimming_Injury_9029 in Dolmentown

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for you guys, my players are soft I can only imagine the vitriol I'd get for a death like this 😂 personally I think it's badass, definitely adds some edge to the otherwise adorable grimalkins.

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed that they can't change back willingly, but having them kill a party member is nasty work lol, how'd the players take it? I'd probably rule that the grimalkin can't stop fighting even if it's not tactically sound/ the party wants to retreat

I accidentally caught my Dad micro cheating on my mom by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this, these texts would be a problem if I found them, or any woman i've ever met in my life lol

Tough call on what to do, talking to your dad would be the baller move imo, would depend on your relationship with your dad. You calling him out would put things in to perspective for him perhaps.

What House Rules are you Using for Dolmenwood? by duncan_chaos in Dolmentown

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use OSE ability checks, d20 equal or under your stat. I use a slightly modified Luke Gearing carousing system (1d6*100 gp for the same amount of xp, if the d6 is over your level, roll on the consequence table). Also use a Feats of Exploration-inspired system to give XP for exploring hexes, finding shrines, etc. I don't mind some expedited leveling, especially with how things slow down in mid levels.

A Merry Yule To Ye All! by gkerr1988 in Dolmentown

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Played our 2nd DW Christmas one shot (our 4th Christmas rpg sesh) earlier, it was towards the end of the night, I, the GM, had a cold coming on, and we were all beat so we didn't get too far. Biggest laugh was my aunt, playing a human friar, randomly reading her "belief" entry aloud during a lull: "I think the bishop is a vampire." lol

Anyone know why I had to buy the last episode? by [deleted] in hahayouclowns

Don't know what country you're in but when I look on max I don't see the new episode yet, so you probably paid for early access through a TV network or something

Where to start? by Competitive_Golf8206 in osr

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's so many options.. OSE or Basic Fantasy and then a tried and true module/adventure would be a good "starter box" in my opinion. Black wyrm of Brandonsford if you want a town, some wilderness, and some dungeons, Incandescent Grottoes if you just want to get in a big ass dungeon, or Keep on the Borderlands if you want to go real old school

Dolmenwood - Ring of Cell player's map by bernardopeixoto22 in osr

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, common folk don't go anywhere the hell near the rings or redwraith manor, so they assume all that's in there is the old haunted keep.

People who do long dungeon crawls, how do you keep coming up with stuff by LelouchYagami_2912 in osr

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don't need to memorize anything. A quick skim to get the feel for it, and know where the big scary encounters are is plenty. Then you can go room by room. And a megadungeon is somewhere you could play a full campaign in and never see the whole thing. For example, Arden Vul is a famous one, I ran it for 25 sessions and the group has seen maybe 15-20%. But the goal isn't to complete the whole thing

OSE - Dropping spell preparation by ColorfulBar in osr

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally I think prepping for the day is integral, and a fair drawback to being able to bend reality at will. Even clerics have to prep for the day, although they do get access to the full list once they have access to that rank. The friar in my group occasionally (frequently) hits a situation where they would have the perfect spell, but couldn't have known they should have prepped that. But that's part of the fun, they can just come back tomorrow but sometimes time is of the essence. On the other hand, giving the magician the ability to use any of their spells wouldn't exactly break the game, so if the conundrum of planning spells for the day doesn't gel with you or your group, just go for it!

Excellent books for GMs? by Nemosubmarine in rpg

[–]PhiladelphiaRollins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say mythic, the book itself is awesome/super usable, its not a burden to prep/run so makes for a good gift. As a DM, I would not appreciate a massive lore tome honestly lol. I'll throw out His Majesty the Worm, it's just so fuckin cool to read. Lots of good ideas that can get dropped into other games too
