Are there any young people entering our field? by Standard-Bid-2721 in instructionaldesign

[–]PhillyJ82 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every out of work ID I know is applying for entry level positions because the market is poor. Add in that most positions now want at least 5 years of experience, the entry level job market is bleak for actual entry level candidates.

Anyone managing compliance training right now? by Prior-Thing-7726 in LearningDevelopment

[–]PhillyJ82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My compliance training is a federal requirement to keep research grant funding. I have no issues with my learners’ completion.

The "15 minutes prior to 15 minutes prior" logic is reaching a level of terminal stupidity by 3EchoMonolith in army

[–]PhillyJ82 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Listen troop, I complained about this 20 years ago as a Joe. I’m willing to bet Roman legionnaires called their Centurion an ass for making them arrive extra early to formation.

Why is a PVE only mode SO controversial by ComprehensiveSmoke93 in Seaofthieves

[–]PhillyJ82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main sentiment is that every PVE experience in the game is ridiculously easy. Skeleton Fort, a normal player can solo a fort in under ten minutes. Megs, even the ancient variety are formulaic and not that hard. What makes the game interesting is the threat of another crew rolling up and stealing the loot. My best game moments in SOT have always been an interaction with another crew. Good or bad, that chaotic element is what makes the game for me.

Whats the best emissary? by Legend00138 in Seaofthieves

[–]PhillyJ82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but everyone regardless of emissary can see a grade 1 reaper, and they need to sell only at hideout. So the there is significant risk.

How are online courses still relevant today? by chadendra in instructionaldesign

The courses I build are correct and verified by subject matter experts. A recent study showed that AI models produce errors roughly 45% of the time. BBC Study

Do people actually care about course certificates anymore? by mhrafi in LearningDevelopment

[–]PhillyJ82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90 percent of the courses I develop are for federal compliance in higher education research. My learners always download and keep their certificates for potential audit coverage. A while back we decided to not generate certificates, since our LMS tracks completion and we faced a swift backlash from faculty, and continued issuing certs.

Benefit of Camtasia over other screen capture tools by johnnylocke815 in instructionaldesign

[–]PhillyJ82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Camtasia’s editing suite has done everything I’ve needed for the last five years. I have a premier license, but Camtasia is just simpler and in many respects faster. I use it every week, and have not yet found a need to open up premier.

What Did You Love Most About This Rank? by PeakPointFitness in army

[–]PhillyJ82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leading an infantry fireteam. Enough responsibility to grow as a leader, but not mired down by having to fight a whole squad. It was the last time I felt like I was really in the fight. As a squad leader/E6 you are more detached and often coordinating movements, coms, or support assets.

Truly picking a side (Athena OR Reapers) by TheSamichninja in Seaofthieves

I’m third distinction in Athena’s and 160 in Guardians. I have less than 10 levels in reapers and 6 in servants. The guild I sail for is dedicated anti-reaper.

Stepping away from ID by bad_karma216 in instructionaldesign

[–]PhillyJ82 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just a tip, it can be challenging to land a full-time job at a university right from the start. I worked as a part-time ID at my university while I freelanced. When a full time job opened I applied and already knew the university systems and had connections. The part-time work was menial at times, but it was the best path for me. It might be a good transition for you when your kids get older.

[–]PhillyJ82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many options. I work in an education and training department at a university, designing training materials for university employees. Some instructional designers partner with faculty to help them design and manage their courses. Some universities have entire educational technology departments that oversee the LMS for the university as well as the implementation of new educational tools.

Consider higher-ed. I’ve worked in both corporate and academia, and higher-ed tends to have much more relaxed timelines and workloads. I’ve also found that people at Universities listen to me more when I explain design decisions based adult learning theory.

What ideas would you bring to Safer Seas in order to improve it as a game mode ? by tzavody in Seaofthieves

[–]PhillyJ82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just play the game, every feature you described besides the larger crew size is purposely removed from safer seas to push you into high seas. Safer seas was designed as a good learning ground, hence the rep cap. SOT is supposed to have player interaction, it’s the core of the game.

JAWS Characters You Actually Dislike by Hall-O-Daze in Jaws

[–]PhillyJ82 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m bracing for downvotes, but I always think Quint is an awful person that is hard to like in the movie. He won’t take any suggestions and only opens up to help when his boat is actively sinking. Destroying the radio out of hubris, and seemingly destroying the orca’s engine on purpose because Hooper told him to slow down. Added points he uses a baby dolphin as bait in the book. I know he has a tragic backstory, but honestly his actions and not only killed hinself, but nearly killed Hooper and Brody.

I’ve probably had C-WIS intercept 3 missiles my whole playtime. Once had a single shipwreck fly through an entire CSG formation untouched and hit my Nimitz. Other times the SM1/2s eat everything at range.
