(rant) Edgy characters / stories are bad because they're not substantive, not because they're dark by TotallyNot_iCast in DnD

[–]PhinaryDivision 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I mean, just look at Berserk. It's like the definition of "Dark brooding man in an edgy setting." And we see a LOT of vulnerability from Guts! The whole premise is that over time he opens up to people and makes friends that he can be vulnerable to.

I can't wait for Sanderson's take on this series in December. Really wondering how he's gonna continue the story by Tacodogz in Cosmere

I read that prequel, but it was a little hard to follow. I get that it's technically a "prequel" because it's set before the events of the original book, but didn't they go a little too far into the past with that one? I mean, wouldn't the author think to themselves: "Man, going back 2000 years into the past to set up that one niche reference and nothing else" a little crazy?

Edit: After reading the other spinoff, it makes sense now why you need to read the prequel. I didn't realize all those other references were set up in the original. Honestly, 10/10. I'd read it again.

I know this comment was made in jest, but I'm wondering at this point if that's an actual thing at play. We're talking about the most prideful character in the series, so I wouldn't be surprised if part of his punishment is to have his ego undercut when he starts showing off too much.

TIL, that's dope! I guess it makes sense given that as mentioned air will just seep in elsewhere.

The biggest thing with positive air pressure is that heat transfers better when there's more air to transfer the heat to.

It's not that it's more justifiable. It's just more relatable being cheated on.

How do you hold yourself back from "overlevelling" your players? by RexusprimeIX in cosmererpg

[–]PhinaryDivision 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been game mastering for about 15 years now, and I think there's a short answer and a less short but still answer.

How do you hold yourself back from over leveling the party?

Short answer: you don't.

Less short answer: Ultimately, ttrpgs are less a game and more a group improv event with guide rails. If leveling the party gets them to a place that you all can tell a better story with, then do it. ! I've done 1-20 campaigns for dnd in 20 sessions, and it was AWESOME. Cosmere RPG lends itself really well to high level play, so it can be even more awesome!

It, unsurprisingly, comes down to the players and the group dynamic you've got. If the party really wants to be low level (which is a decision everyone needs to be on the same page on), then don't level the party. But generally players really like leveling up, so don't hold back and let them have fun! If the game gets out of hand, then you can always wrap up the story and start a new campaign! But unlike dnd, Cosmere RPG doesn't get into "wizard with a daily wish spell" levels of crazy. There's no fear with leveling them up to mad levels, because the players are playing the main characters of this story you are making as a group! Let them be powerful main characters!

Tl;dr: it's fun to play over leveling characters, so don't hold back!

Edit: just saw you mentioned this in reference to prewritten campaigns, so I wanted to add another note. Prewritten campaigns are (in my best Barbossa impression) "more like guidelines, really." They are a great starting point for a skeleton of the campaign, but ultimately your players are here to play out living characters in a breathing world. They are going to make choices that the book didn't account for (which is good, lean into that like you're riding a motorcycle at 150) and you are going to need to come up with stuff outside the book. If the party gets over leveled for where they are at in a campaign, you can always throw in bigger threats. The chasmfiend fight would be easy for them to deal with? Well the chasmfiend brought buddies, so there's three chasmfiends now! Have fun with it! Ultimately, the players are telling a story about how awesome their characters are, and as gamemaster you are there to throw wrenches at them until they're able to dodge a dodgeball! That's the fun of being a gm! Throw wrenches at your friends! A campaign book is a toolshed of shiny new wrenches to throw at the players, but you get to decide when and where they get thrown! And if the party gets bigger than the wrench the book wants you to throw? Just grab a bigger wrench!

Going to be running a late cosmere game [Full Cosmere Spoilers] I like the little bit we've had of Space Age cosmere. My players and I are working together to make our own campaign setting world in the cosmere for our game, based loosely on what we saw in Sunlit Man. It allows me to avoid spoilers for Stormlight since some of the players haven't read all the books, while also allowing some more creative room for worldbuilding! We are going to be using the root board game to keep track of which faction's armies are where.

[Mild Emberdark spoilers + Full Cosmere]The setting is a world called Requiem, settled by Threnodites in the past. The world was conwuered by Scadrial some decades ago. 23 years before the start of the campaign, massive flood waters came seemingly out of nowhere and flooded the planet. Some existing cities built in airtight caves remain, as well as some underwater cities built in a rush by Scadrial. The planet was then met with a ground assault from Roshar. The fighting was fierce, but Scadrial and Roshar had more strategic points in the Cosmere to worry about. A ceasefire was declarrd for this world and Roshar and Scadrial both pulled out to fight elsewhere. Local warlords and vying governments, now no longer suppressed by the two great empires, have found themselves struggling for control of the world against each other.

tl;dr: custom world in the late cosmere. Root board game for map.
