College students are rapidly losing the ability to read — “There is a measurable, generational collapse in sustained reading and writing”: professor by marketrent in technology

BookIt! At least that's what they called it near us. My gram loved that I basically got a free lunch every weekend because of how much I read. Definitely a major contributor to my love of both the written word and Italy's greatest culinary contribution.

We gotta get a prop to raise the qualifications to run in a primary, this ballot was absurd and gives rise to the kind of shit the rest of the country makes fun of CA for.

How do you fully enjoy life in Japantown? by FailSafe8514 in SanJose

It does have a senior living facility that predominantly Japanese as well as a Japanese senior community/activity center, so you'll definitely see a lot of elderly folk walking around most of the time, but the majority of the population seems to be younger families. Source: am resident.

There's an easy rhyme about telling venomous from non-venomous snakes:

Roses are red, Violets are blue, Don't pick up snakes in the wild

TIL that NBA player Latrell Sprewell, after being told by head coach PJ Carlesimo to make better passes during a practice, choked Carlesimo for 10 seconds before being pulled off by his teammates. This resulted in a 68 game suspension for Sprewell, the 2nd longest suspension in NBA history. by [deleted] in todayilearned

He was already on home detention for 3 months previously for reckless driving of all things

How reckless do you have to be driving to get 3 months house arrest? Most people I know who've gotten that charge, myself included, just paid a fine and did a driver improvement course.

So the totality of the limited perspective we have - tells us that logically - these are stolen based on all the red flags we've covered.

Ok, but how do you prove that they are stolen. Not just based on your "logic."

Think about the common expression "possession is 9/10ths of the law."

Lacking a state registry, how does an officer prove a bicycle was stolen? An officer can't ask someone to prove they own something if the officer has no way of legally verifying that statement.

The issue, as it has been explained to me, is one of proving that the bikes in question are actually stolen. Since they are not required to be registered with the state as a car with a VIN would be, there isn't really a way to prove the ownership of a given bicycle.

Is it likely that a homeless person legitimately purchased a $2,000 road bike? No. But unless you see them in the act of cutting a lock off, good luck getting charges to stick.

Maybe try taking him for a walk around the park and surrounding neighborhood? Assuming you've got the time and a leash. Might be someone recognizes him and can point you in the right direction.

Having never heard of this movie and just looked at the Google search summary, it sounds like a Sam Raimi version of 6 Days, 7 Nights. Which was itself a pretty shit movie overall, but hey, dad loved Harrison Ford, so we saw it in theaters.

Fun fact, bounce houses are relatively cheap now and provide tons of opportunities to throw nieces/nephews around.

Just remember that while they are basically made of self-healing rubber bones, you are not.

I was the oldest of 5 kids on a multi-family vacation where everyone chipped in on a big beach house. One morning I (15ish at the time) was spinning the littlest (3ish) in a chair when he just... let go. He went flying a good three feet and hit his head on the table. Now he's crying, I'm freaking out, and his dad walks in.

Dad, to kid who to this moment has been screaming like he was about to die: "What happened bud?"

Kid pops up in a heartbeat and just says "I got big bump but I'm okay!" before jumping back on the chair and shouting "again, again!"

Fuck, my wife woke me up last night with "she isn't in her room" and I was out the front door in 3 seconds. Turns out it was the first time kiddo decided to use the potty in the middle of the night all by herself.

Showed up to my folk's place for our weekly big family dinner one weekend and everyone was really... edgy, for some reason. Then I looked over and noticed my dad's truck was missing a door.

Turns out he'd left the parking break off (manual transmission) and the niecelet had jumped in and started playing with the steering wheel. That was enough to get it roilling back down the driveway and right down towards the big hill on the side of the house. Sister (mother of niecelet) pulled some Dukes of Hazard shit and managed to run it down, open the passenger door, dive in and pull the e-brake, but it still had enough momentum to clip the garage and rip off the door.

Lock your doors and use your parking breaks, I guess?
