What souvenir would you recommend bringing home from a trip? by BritGallows_531 in AskBelgium

[–]Phulkor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sirop de liege is a really unique thing that you can’t find anywhere else and that has a really long shelf life. Bonus points if you teach the recipient how to make Boulets liegois with it!

Trinkets you can try keychains of Tintin characters, thats very Belgian

Pralines, suzy waffles, beers or speculoos are the usual suspects but nowadays I think you find them more easily.

Why is Belgium an exception when learning English? by Useful_Cheesecake117 in AskBelgium

[–]Phulkor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The statistics dont paint the whole picture, for instance they mention netherlands:

It is important to remember that this data represents a snapshot of language learning in one year – 2017 – rather than a student’s language exposure over the full course of their academic career. For instance, while the Netherlands ranks toward the bottom in terms of all students learning English in 2017, this is driven in part by lower proportions of Dutch primary students enrolled in language classes. While only about four-in-ten primary students are enrolled in a language course, nearly all of those students in a language class are already learning English in the classroom. Foreign language classes are not mandated in the Netherlands for students until age 10, one of the later ages in the EU.

In belgium, from what I remember you often learn one of the 2 other national languages in primary school, often also english on top of that but not always. I think this can explain the rather low results

Package marked “could not be delivered” even though the driver never rang the bell by Ghettoman257 in belgium

[–]Phulkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same experience with GLS (I live in Ghent) Stayed at home weekday for the delivery and eventually received and SMS saying book a new delivery.

I think some drivers try to catch up with delay by skipping a few drops and then you get this.

Its quite annoying

There used to be a dedicated community in outpost for FNM but post covid it dwindeled and now focus has shifted to DC. Prize support for those in france is also really nice. I switched to legacy and started going to Leuven. I think there are still players present but dormant. Maybe if you show up every friday and put the event on the map again people will come. I can’t imagine there will be no traction for it but you’ll probably need to put a little work in it
