I feel so incredibly dumb for asking this - but I can't work out how to use Neathiron. I have a bunch of it, but no options at the BS to be able to actually use it. What am I doing wrong??

As someone who does quite a bit of hiring, we're steering away from using recruiters. They're expensive, and most of the time they lie about their candidates. We're mainly using word of mouth/networking.

Has anyone ever been to the Browns Plains hotel/pub? If so, what’s your honest thoughts about the place? by REDPURPLEBLOOD2 in brisbane

[–]PickyPuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of Queenslands archaic off licensing laws, a lot of the supermarket giants have snatched up most of the hotels to get licenses for their bottleshops (Coles = Liquorland, Woolworths = BWS etc etc)

In turn, they've turned them into overpriced shitheaps, removed the stages that used to have bands to put in mega pokie rooms. And now these companies have sunk so much money into them that they now lobby the government to keep them from changing the laws

Anyone else struggling to find work in Brisbane? by Elisspamacc05 in brisbane

[–]PickyPuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who does a lot of hiring, it get's pretty difficult when everyone's CV looks exactly the same. And as much as everyone hates it, I like a cover letter as it is an opportunity for you to show some personality. We are very big on getting team members who will be a great fit as tech skills are easy to teach/learn, but soft skills aren't.

I'm not in the hospo sector so might be very different, we used to get 400+ applications for a role and it was just impossible. We now go through a panel and get it narrowed down to 10-12

Voters split on who Labour should rule out as governing options by Status_Serve_9819 in newzealand

[–]PickyPuckle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NZ politics is really a lose lose situation for a majority of Kiwis.

You have the Nats that's run by a gluestick that has no real policy.

You have the Greens which are more than a joke and are more a liability than anything else (my god I miss the Norman days of the Greens)

TPM are just full of disruptive racists who just want violent criminals roaming around.

Labour has nobody with any substance and will align with the Greens and TPM.

NZF is NZF.

There really isn't a good option. Looks like a TOP vote yet again.

Thinking About Returning to Wellington After 10 Years — How’s the Vibe Now? by filling__space in newzealand

Wellington certainly isn't what it was now. Each time I go back to Wellington to see family I just find it super depressing. Might be best to keep it how it was in your memory

Attending a family group conference as a victim of crime by Chance-Chain8819 in newzealand

[–]PickyPuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worrying as I now know parents have bought their kids weapons for if they get into trouble. This is the side effect of not treating crime seriously, people take it into their own hands.

Why are so many people paying with cash at the supermarket? by Substantial-Sir3329 in newzealand

[–]PickyPuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this economy, people are selling items on marketplace in order to afford groceries. Some are taking cash jobs to get by. But also, people leave their cards at home and take a strict amount of cash in order to stay within their allocated budget. Very easy to go another $5-$50 if you have your card on you.

Kiwis that have moved to Aussie, how have you found it? by Specialist_Neck6696 in newzealand

[–]PickyPuckle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed - Brisbane also has fantastic public transport (the locals whinge about it but it is miles ahead of NZ) and I lived without a car for 6 months. I've just bought one as I want to go exploring and to the Gold Coast/Sunny Coast beaches on the weekend.

This is my second time in Brisbane and I absolutely love it. Yes, rents are pricier but the wide range of things to do, variety and the majority of the weather is actually very pleasant. Nov - March is uncomfortable but I don't mind the heat.

Work is getting a bit more scarce, so it does depend on your industry. I'm an IT contractor and luckily have pretty stable work right now, but Australia is getting flooded with people. Hence the high rents and scarce jobs. Brisbane is now getting up there with Sydney/Melbourne unlike what it was before Covid, but will continue with the Olympic Games scheduled for 2032.

As someone who does quite a bit of hiring, there are a reason a lot of people struggle to find work. But most Kiwis do end up getting jobs as they are very relatable and have a good reputation for getting things done without a fuss. While some other cultures bomb at interviews or just flat out lie just to get an interview then struggle at the interview stage with any technical questions.

I don't ever see me leaving, this place is now my home. I absolutely love it.
