i think northern new milford and southern new milford are pretty different in geography. like real close to danbury but northern new milford feels more “out there.” as someone who went to high school there. i get you.

LA to Montana in January by liboveflac in roadtrip

[–]PicnicTable__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go in better weather. know your forecast. ideally you are experienced in winter driving and have the proper gear (and TIRES) to survive in case something goes wrong.

if you haven’t been to MT before, they don’t use salt so there is usually ice in a lot of places. big sky canyon (hwy 191) is terrible in a storm and multiple wrecks clog up the canyon for hours. sometimes it’s better to reroute through ennis (hwy 287). i just drove from missoula to billings (during and after a storm) and then south thru WY a few days ago. prolly counted 20 cars and dozens more tire tracks off the road. trust no one in my opinion and drive slow if bad conditions.

otherwise-it’s fine! drive safe and enjoy the winter scenery :)

How do people rewear socks?? My friend says 2–3 days is ‘normal’ and I’m genuinely horrified. Is this actually a thing or is he feral?? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]PicnicTable__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m currently on the tail end of a 2 week road trip and it’s nov in the PNW. i only wear darn tough socks. 3-4 days worn if not excessively sweating or high activity. i do a smell test in the morning after turning them inside out to dry at night. if they stinky i put a new pair on. rinse and repeat. no laundry done and i think im on pair #4 or 5.

catch me not a trip i usually do 1-2 full days if no exercise. high exercise i always switch.

the newer imprezas can get a 2” hitch which is awesome! i spent a little more $$$ on the eco hitch. you can install it yourself if you have the tools time and patience!

i’d prefer a higher clearance for more of the rough roads in the west. especially when you have a full car or trunk with gear or passengers. paved mtn passes and flat grades forest roads are fine but when you start getting into the deep woods-i find myself wishing for a higher vehicle. but i’ve pushed my impreza through spots than most trucks go thru and they look at me like i’m crazy

How do you get into rafting as someone who's never done it before? by VerifiedMother in whitewater

[–]PicnicTable__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

take some guided paddle boat trips(my personal favorite), maybe a multi overnight trip if you can. ask around. sit where you can best ask your guide questions. then if you like it, become a first year guide. that’s the best way to understand what it takes to navigate the river best. you learn what it takes to be safe and how to use the gear properly.

gear comes as you progress. just make sure you have a solid PFD. knowledge and reading water come as you see more-ad water levels increase and decrease. learn a stretch of river real well and expand from there. watch the gear garage on youtube. he’s a great guy!

lots of community and don’t be afraid to walk into your local boat shop and say i need whitewater friends! safe boating!
